Chapter 193 Abandoned Farm
Chapter 193 Abandoned Farm
Not long after Haven fired the signal flare into the sky, a squad of Royal Griffin Knights flew over the slums, circled a few times, and looked down at the dense buildings below.
They couldn't find out who sent the call signal. Just as the Griffin Squad was wondering what to do, Haven took a few steps and leaped onto the roof next to them.
Hey~ here~~
The griffin rider saw a figure waving below and quickly flew over.
Because Haven was only wearing ordinary hard leather armor, the Royal Griffin Knights who flew over couldn't confirm his identity. The griffins flapped their wings and hovered in mid-air, while the squad leader, Kyle, poked his head out to look down.
"Who are you, and why are you sending a rallying signal?"
Upon hearing the other party's words, Haven took out the White Lion family crest and the MI8 silver badge and waved them at the griffin knight captain hovering above his head.
After seeing Havent's actions, Kyle maneuvered the griffin down from the sky. The griffin landed on the roof with a sickening sound, but fortunately the house held up and did not collapse.
Seeing their captain land, the other griffin riders also searched for sturdier-looking spots to land.
After calming the griffin, Kyle approached and, seeing the two badges on Haven's chest, quickly gave Haven a military salute.
"Sir, this is Kyle, the captain of the sixth squad of the second battalion of the Royal Griffin Knights. I am here today to report on my patrol mission."
Seeing the griffin squad leader dressed in a light, feathered armor, Haven returned the salute.
"Hello, Captain Kyle, I'm Haven. Thank you for coming. I'm currently investigating something and need your help."
Kyle glanced around, puzzled as to what this seemingly young MI8 official was investigating in this filthy place…
However, such thoughts only crossed Kyle's mind. Not to mention the MI8 badge on Haven's chest that looked like it belonged to a high-ranking officer, just the white lion badge on his chest alone was enough to shut him up and make him do whatever he was told.
What such an important figure is thinking is completely beyond the comprehension of a mere squad leader of the Royal Griffin Riders; I should just carry out his orders.
"Yes, Lord Havent, how can I help you? Should I gather more people?"
Looking at the chaotic streets of the slums, Kyle assumed that this MI8 official wanted to arrest people in this area, and that his griffon rider squad alone would have a tough time.
The buildings here are narrow and densely packed. If you're not careful, a griffin might slip and fall into a crevice, and getting out would be quite difficult.
"No need, just the few of you are enough. Come with me."
Seeing Haven jump off the roof, the squad leader Kyle had no choice but to jump off as well. The moment he landed, the foul smell of the slum streets made Kyle frown incessantly. The appalling environment made Kyle, who was used to high-class environments, feel his stomach churning.
"As I just mentioned, I came here to investigate something, and I happened to find a key witness here."
As he spoke, Haven reached out and touched Anne, who was standing by the shack. The little girl was looking cautiously at the knight following behind Haven.
“I need her to take me somewhere to continue my investigation, but Anne’s mother is now very seriously ill and can’t be without Anne’s care for too long. Also, the security here is not good, and she is worried about Anne and me going out for too long.”
"So, I need you to help me resolve this concern. In a little while, take Anne's mother to the Royal Academy's noble district and have the person in charge there contact Lori to pick her up for me. Once that's done, gentlemen."
Hearing that it was such a simple matter, Kyle breathed a sigh of relief, but was still slightly disappointed. After all, having the opportunity to get close to such an important person was not easy for him, and doing such a simple thing was obviously not enough to leave an impression on the other party.
"Yes, sir, we guarantee we will successfully deliver the person to Lord Lori. After that, is there anything else you require of us?"
Upon hearing her words, Haven initially hesitated and wanted to say no, but then he suddenly thought about it again. Anne had mentioned that there were werewolves in that place. Although, based on what happened that night, Frederick IV would surely have arranged for a large-scale investigation and extermination of those cultists, and if nothing unexpected happened, that place should now be an empty shell, he was afraid that special circumstances might occur, in which case he might not be able to defeat an ordinary werewolf.
"Hmm...you guys only operate in this area, right?"
"Yes, sir. Our mission today is to patrol this area."
"Okay, I understand. You guys help me get the person there first. I'll give you another signal if anything else happens later."
After communicating with the griffin squad leader, Haven looked at Annie, who was standing obediently to the side, and said to the little girl:
"How about that? I'll take your mother to my place first, and then I'll take you back after we finish our mission. That way you won't have to worry about those people coming back after we leave."
Hearing Haven's meticulous arrangements, Anne nodded obediently, thinking to herself, "This mage is such a kind person."
"Look, this lady is very ill. You need to fly slowly. She can't withstand the cold air from high-speed flight."
Looking at the thin woman that Haven carried out of the shack, Kyle could smell the sour stench emanating from her even from a distance. But in order not to leave a bad impression on Haven and for the sake of his own future, Kyle expressionlessly took the woman wrapped in a thick blanket from Haven's arms.
If it weren't for the gentle rise and fall of the other person's chest, Kyle would have thought that Lord Havent had given him a corpse.
"Alright, you can go now. Fly slowly. Take this bottle of medicine. If she seems unwell, give her a sip. If everything is alright, you can keep the bottle for yourself."
Kyle's pupils contracted slightly as he took the potion from Havent. A level three life-enhancing potion—what a rich young master! Giving away a potion worth forty-five gold coins so easily.
"Yes, Lord Havente, the Sixth Squad guarantees to complete the mission."
Haven watched the griffin riders disappear into the distance and dusted himself off.
"Let's go. Oh, and see if there's anything else you want to take with you, so you don't have to come back again."
After some consideration, Haven decided to take the little girl away. Otherwise, even if he gave her some money, it wouldn't solve anything and would only bring her unnecessary trouble.
Seeing that Anne looked a little lost, Haven flicked the little girl's forehead with his finger.
"What, you want that guy to drag you and your mother out of the shack?"
Remembering Jamie's terrifying appearance from earlier, Annie shook her head frantically.
A few minutes later, Anne emerged from the shack carrying a pile of junk, seemingly intending to take everything in the shack with her.
Looking at the pile of clutter in front of him, which had grown into a small mountain, Haven's eyebrows rose involuntarily, and he squatted down to identify it.
"Why are you carrying this tattered straw mat? Throw it away."
Ouch!! This garment has three huge holes, especially the neckline. Throw it away, throw it away.
Throw this blanket away, I have all these things there...
Hmm... this little bear?
Anne watched as Haven threw the things she had taken out back into the shack one by one, and her heart bled. These were things she had gone through so much trouble to find.
Seeing that the monk was about to throw back the teddy bear he cuddled every night to sleep, he immediately said anxiously:
"Master, that...that's what Dad bought for Annie..."
Hearing Anne's words, Haven looked up at the little girl standing at the door of the shack. Anne was fidgeting with her two fingers, her eyes were slightly red, and tears were about to fall.
Realizing that his behavior seemed a bit like that of a bad guy, Haven gave an awkward laugh.
"Hehe, actually these things are quite meaningful. I'll take them all for now, and you can figure them out yourself when we get back."
He took off the Starry Sky Covenant he was wearing around his neck, put it on his finger, scanned everything around him, and then put it inside.
"Come on, take me there."
Annie smiled sweetly again after seeing that the mage had taken all the things she cherished with him.
South side of the garbage mountain
The two walked for almost an hour and arrived at the outer edge of the farm that Annie had described.
Annie's face was tense, as if she was still quite shaken by what had happened that day.
I peered through the broken wooden fence and saw a vast expanse of white inside. The heavy snow from a few days ago hadn't melted yet. This outskirts of the capital was naturally left unattended.
Originally, this area was under the jurisdiction of the municipal government, but since there was no money to be made here, they assigned a caretaker in his fifties and then simply left it to its own devices. Gradually, it became a dumping ground for garbage.
"Is this the place? It doesn't look like anyone's here. Are you sure, Annie?"
The little girl hid behind Haven. When she saw him looking at her, she nodded quickly and pointed to the large wooden warehouse in the middle of the farm.
“That’s where Anne saw it.”
"Come on, let's go over and take a look."
The two looked around the warehouse, but found nothing except a bunch of messy footprints.
After pushing the warehouse door, they found that it couldn't be opened at all; it seemed to be blocked by something inside.
"Annie, where is that skylight?"
Led by Annie, the two climbed up the drainpipe and, upon reaching the roof, discovered a large hole in it.
"Is this right here?"
The two squatted at the edge of the large hole and looked down, but it was pitch black inside and they couldn't see anything clearly.
However, the cold wind blowing in my face carried a foul, fishy smell, like rotting flesh and blood.
"You stay here, I'll go down and take a look."
As he spoke, he took out a torch from his ring, lit it, and threw it down. In the torchlight, Haven could roughly see the scene inside: scattered boxes and miscellaneous items piled up everywhere, indicating that no one had been there for a long time.
With Anne's help, Haven climbed down the rope, and as soon as he landed, he drew the short sword hanging at his waist and became alert.
Just as Haven was observing his surroundings, he suddenly sensed movement behind him and was startled. He quickly turned around and saw that Anne had followed him down as well.
"Hey? What are you doing down here?"
"I'd like to see if I can help Sister Hena find Uncle Johnny."
Hearing the little girl's irrefutable reasons, Haven couldn't help but roll his eyes. This little girl actually has a strong sense of contractual obligation.
"Alright then, you stay behind me and don't wander off. I think there's something wrong with this place."
His heightened perception, which comes with his foresight, makes Haven exceptionally sensitive to environmental changes, and he is always able to interpret the current environment differently.
The two men carried torches and circled the warehouse, finding that the warehouse door was indeed locked from the inside. After confirming that there was nothing unusual inside the warehouse...
Following the stench, they came to a bottomless tunnel, the stench emanating from its entrance.
At this point, a very philosophical question confronted Havent: to go in or not to go in, is a good question.
After thinking for a few more seconds, Heventon decided to go in anyway. "I, Heventon, have traveled all over the world, I've even seen demons, why would I be afraid of this?" Of course not! (Actually, he was terrified. If Annie hadn't been there, Heventon would have turned around and gone back.)
Haven held a short sword in one hand and a torch in the other. The two of them crouched low and crawled into the tunnel, the torchlight casting long shadows.
As they went deeper, some indistinct roars could be heard, but upon closer listening, they seemed to be nonexistent.
I don't know how long I walked, but suddenly the view opened up before me, and I came to a hall that was as big as a football field.
The faint light from the torches was not enough to see the entire hall clearly. Just as Havent was considering whether to cast some illumination spells to see what was going on,
The sound of chains scraping against the ground came from the darkness not far away, sounding unusually jarring in the quiet night.
As if sensing something, Haven noticed the hairs on his arms standing on end and quickly threw the torch away.
Wow wow wow
The scraping sound of the chains grew louder, and sparks flickered in the darkness.
Before Havent could even see what it was, the torch that had been thrown was extinguished.
In an instant, the entire hall was plunged into darkness again, with only heavy breathing and the sound of chains scraping against the floor remaining.
