Chapter 17 The Northern Dilemma
Chapter 17 The Northern Dilemma
"Sir, if it weren't for that noble child, we would have..."
"All right"
Aurelion, walking at the front, looked at the busy citizens of the city and nodded in satisfaction.
The evening breeze rustled Aurelion's monk's robes embroidered with golden divine patterns, and the faint smell of smoke in the air filled him with immense joy.
"It's never going to be that easy to begin with, so temporary gains or losses don't matter, but..."
Recalling the scene in the conference room, Aurelion smiled.
"What an interesting child!"
"Sir, what did you say?"
"Nothing, is Duogu back?"
"Not yet, sir."
On the other side, after listening to Count Morrie's explanation, Haven's brows furrowed into a knot, and he couldn't help but keep gnashing his teeth.
"So, do we really have people in the North collaborating with evil cults?"
"Yes and no~"
Hearing Count Morley's ambiguous answer, he was momentarily stunned.
"Huh? Is that how you answer something like that?"
"Hahahaha, kid, you still have a lot to learn."
So, my daughter Vivian is fourteen years old this year, and she's just as beautiful as her mother. You two can be friends.
I will teach you this knowledge.
Looking at the lewd Earl Morrie, Haven rolled his eyes so hard they almost reached the sky. He'd never even seen his wife; who would believe he had a beautiful daughter?
"Ahem, hmm~"
Count Hylan couldn't stand watching his old friend tease his son.
"In conclusion, as you said, the fact that the Death Order could develop an army of tens of thousands of ghouls in just a few days is terrifying."
"So what?"
Haven asked, puzzled.
"You participated in the battle, so you should have experienced that there are some exceptionally powerful ghouls among them."
Seeing Haventy nod, Earl Hylan continued...
"That's the problem. Of these tens of thousands of people, only about two-thirds are ordinary people, and the remaining third are mostly low- to mid-level professionals."
While cleaning up the battlefield, we discovered that many of the ghouls were knights and professionals who had died among the nobles of the North.
Generally, fallen soldiers and knights, besides being buried by their families, were often buried in the warrior cemeteries within their own territories. This was to avoid attracting the attention of cults and necromancers.
This area is usually kept secret and guarded by soldiers. We have already sent personnel to investigate which cemeteries have fallen.
Hearing his father's explanation, Haven sensed something was amiss, but quickly realized what was going on.
"Couldn't it be that the Church of Death found this place on their own?"
"Ugh~ Little Winter, no!"
Haven looked at Count Morrie with a puzzled expression, waiting for his explanation.
"The result was even more terrifying. Based on the findings after the battlefield was cleared, there were soldiers from seven or eight different families that could be investigated. Whether it was the badges on their armor or the markings on their weapons, some of the ghouls even had the nameplates of the soldiers they had worn in life around their necks."
The territories of these seven or eight families span a very large area. If the Church of Death really found the soldiers' graves in these territories on its own, it would be impossible for it to do so in less than two or three months.
The fact that we haven't found any trace of the Church of Death for so long is even more frightening and suspicious.
Haven was speechless for a moment.
"so?"
"What?"
Count Morrie didn't hear what Hevent said and asked a question in return.
"Therefore, it cannot be understood as..."
Either one of our northern nobles has defected to a cult and caused us great destruction, or many of our nobles are secretly plotting something.
is that so....."
At this moment, only the two earls and Haven remained in the conference room. Earl Morley nodded appreciatively when he heard Haven's incisive explanation of the situation.
"Which outcome do you prefer, Lord Morley?"
"Hmm~ little fellow. I must say, you are smarter than I thought, based on my understanding of the lords, big and small, in the North."
Hmm... The first possibility you mentioned is probably more likely.
"should?"
Upon hearing Earl Morley's reply, Haven exclaimed in surprise.
"So it's like we've soiled our pants, and we don't even know if it's dry or runny?"
"Ahem~"
Upon hearing his son's crude analogy, Earl Hylan coughed to interrupt.
"Havent! Watch the way you speak to Earl Morrie!"
Count Morley waved his hand to indicate that it was alright, and then raised his glass to Haven.
"Hehehehe~ Little Vent, that's a very vivid analogy, but that's really the situation. We can only wait for the scouts to return and then see what the situation is."
"What about that group of people? Didn't the Church of Death take the remaining ghouls and flee to Ugarama? How did they manage to chase after them and eliminate them?"
Count Maurice did not answer Havent directly, but instead asked a question in return.
"Little Vent, do you know anything about the history of the Empire?"
Haven nodded and then shook his head.
"I've read some, and I have a general idea of the events recorded in some books."
"So what did you see in it?"
"The empire has a lot going on, does being good at fighting count?"
Upon hearing Haven's reply, Earl Morley burst into hearty laughter, and Earl Hyland, standing nearby, also laughed after hearing his son's words.
Haven looked at the two laughing incessantly and wondered what was so funny.
“You’re right, little Vent, that’s true. In the nearly thousand-year history of the empire, the number of years without war is probably only a few decades in total.”
We are always initiating various wars, or being forced to take over other countries, or tribes attacking us.
Do you know why? "
Haven shook his head. He had never thought about these questions. He had only read these books when he was young, and he lost interest in reading as he got older.
"As a nobleman, you should study more, lest you end up like your father..."
Under the murderous glare of Earl Hyland, Earl Morley quickly stopped and changed his words.
"It's very simple. If the other party has something we want, we have to find a way to get it. We can use force or strategy in the process."
Similarly, if we have something the other party wants, they will try every means to take it from us.
This applies to relationships between individuals, nations, nobles, and the church, and so on.
After Count Morrie calmly gave his answer, the conference room fell into an unusual silence.
"So, Aurelion has his eye on what we have?"
"Not Aurelion, but the Church, child."
There was a lot of information, and Haven was having trouble processing it all at once.
"So, what is it about us that the church is after?"
Count Morrie looked out the window at the completely dark sky, sighed, and said in a low voice...
"Our people~"
