Chapter 6 Skeleton
Chapter 6 Skeleton
A few minutes later, Su Ming opened the instant noodles and found they were a little overcooked. He picked up his fork, ready to slurp them up, when his vision blurred for a moment.
He looked around suspiciously, but found nothing unusual. He picked up the flashlight and shone it, but still nothing seemed amiss.
Su Ming put down the flashlight, then suddenly felt a heaviness on his body, like the sleep paralysis he experienced in a dream. The feeling was fleeting, almost causing him to fall.
He quickly told the skeleton how he felt and asked why.
“Oh, the number one mistake that every undead beginner makes,” the skeleton replied. “Don’t you have that in mind, rookie mage?”
Su Ming searched and found nothing.
"Strange, how come your Saint-level Enlightenment is even worse than that of an ordinary mage?" the scholar asked, puzzled. "Your rank is low, and your knowledge is limited—where did you use all that enormous causal knowledge?"
After Bai Gu finished muttering to himself, he began to tell Su Ming the reason.
"This is a mixed sensation. You have resurrected an undead creature, and its signals are interfering with you."
“No,” Su Ming said. “I didn’t summon anything.”
"That's why I say this is the most common mistake beginners make. They summon it and then forget about it, or they summon it unconsciously without realizing it."
Su Ming thought about it carefully, "No, I'm sure I didn't. Weren't you watching me the whole time? How could I have had a chance?"
"Is that so? Hmm... I understand now, it was Galio who summoned them!" White Bone suddenly realized, "The Awakening Technique allowed you to inherit them. Quickly search your sea of consciousness to see if there are any activated necromantic marks."
Su Ming quickly probed his senses into his sea of consciousness and, sure enough, found a glittering mark. "There really is one!"
"Establish a link through the sea of consciousness, and then counter-summon it. I don't need to teach you that, do I?"
"Mmm." Su Ming tried to link the undead mark according to his basic knowledge of the undead, but failed several times.
"You otherworldly people have such low magical talent?" Even White Bone was surprised. This was something as simple as breathing; she never imagined she could fail. "As expected, the longer you live, the more you see," she remarked.
Su Ming wasn't in a hurry; he had no idea about these things anyway. He held his breath, focused intently, and reconnected.
-
He felt a barrier being shattered, and he finally reconnected. His sea of consciousness visibly shrank considerably, indicating that he had consumed a lot of energy.
Release your senses; this is a skeleton.
"Spiritual Vision!" This time, without the White Bone Scholar's guidance, Su Ming began to operate it. He was eager to study it further; it would be good to master even a fraction of its power.
Psychic vision is a black-and-white field of vision; living objects are highlighted, while inanimate objects are only shown as dim outlines, which Su Ming found very difficult to adapt to. However, it also has its advantages; psychic vision can easily penetrate obstacles, and he could see many humanoid creatures not far away.
“There are so many people around it,” Su Ming told the skeleton. “Oh, it’s a skeleton.”
"A lot of people? It can't be the Templars' camp, can it? That's impossible. There are a bunch of clergy there. Any skeletons there would have been turned to ashes long ago."
How do I determine my location?
"It's still about perception, centering on one's own body, and perceiving the location of the imprinted links."
Su Ming immediately began, but to no avail; the necromantic mark seemed to be linked to the void.
"Your talent is utterly pathetic." White Bone was already used to it.
Su Ming tried several times but had to give up. He manipulated the skeleton to get up; the skeleton was covered in clothes stained with dust and leaves, and piles of rotting flesh, clearly indicating that it hadn't moved since being summoned. This immediately filled Su Ming with a sense of guilt for desecrating the dead. He cleaned it up before removing the clothes, but then hesitated, wondering if he should lie back down and bury himself properly, letting the deceased rest in peace.
"Not only are you unsuitable to be a necromancer, but your understanding is also so weak." The skeleton was numb. "A corpse is a corpse, a substance that life returns to the world."
“The world I live in highly respects life, including the dead,” Su Ming said. “If I had done this before I transmigrated, I would have been imprisoned for desecrating a corpse.”
"A narrow world."
“Narrow-minded? You’d be labeled a heretic here too, wouldn’t you?” Su Ming retorted.
“Necromancers are victims of factional infighting,” White Bone sighed. “The struggle between the Dark and Light factions has a long history.”
"So the Light faction is using its control over public opinion to smear you and cut off the Dark faction's wings?" Su Ming guessed.
"You know a lot!"
"There's nothing new under the sun, even in another world," Su Ming sighed. He finally decided to manipulate the skeleton to take a few glances at the crowd, then lie back down and be done with it.
Come anyway.
The skeleton rose from a forest, and the human figures seen through the psychic vision were all gathered on a wide road outside the forest. Interspersed among the crowd were some huge, square-shaped non-living entities, many of which were moving around rapidly.
It looks strangely familiar.
"Your road is so wide! It's like a highway back home," Su Ming asked the skeleton. "Do you often have to pass by large creatures?"
"Very wide?" When the portal opened, Bai Gu had also seen the scenery on the other side of Earth. She thought for a moment and understood what Su Ming's path meant. "No, no, no, our path is very narrow, less than a quarter the width of yours."
Su Ming mentally drew a puzzled emoji and sent it over.
"What kind of game is this?" White Bone was surprised. She had never used mind-to-mind chat before and was seeing this for the first time. "Hmm, you can draw a picture of what you see and send it to me."
“That’s right.” Su Ming immediately started drawing, but he soon realized he didn’t need to, because he had already recognized what those square things were while he was drawing.
It's cars, lots and lots of cars!
Su Ming became excited, and the skeleton he was controlling also jumped up. This was the place where he had traveled and left, right on that highway!
The skeleton he controls is on Earth!
The reason it wasn't recognized immediately was because the scene was completely unrecognizable; a huge crater had appeared where the wormhole had previously appeared, and the surrounding area was devastated.
Su Ming steadied himself and observed carefully. A large number of fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances were crowded nearby, and firefighters were already packing up their equipment, clearly indicating that a major fire had just occurred.
Did something explode? Su meditated. He used his spiritual vision and indeed saw some dissipated souls. Counting the remnants, it seemed that about seven or eight people had died.
The truck driver was among them. Su Xiang remembered a dark magic spell he should know—Communication with the Dead. He tried to use it, but found he couldn't invoke the runes across realms.
-
When in doubt, consult the bones.
The scholar who was asked for help remained silent for a full three minutes, to the point that Su Ming almost thought she had gone offline again.
