Chapter 208 There’s Someone Above Me

On the highway, outside the car window, the winter night was rushing by, with faint starlight interspersed in the dark sky.

Xu Ranxi held Kaka in her arms, feeling somewhat dazed, her eyelids drooping heavily.

After a nearly 16-hour flight, she was still jet-lagged and drowsiness quickly overwhelmed her.

She leaned back in the back seat, hugging the cat and yawning, her whole body swaying to the side as if she had no bones.

Zhang Muchen glanced at her and, seeing that she was having difficulty even opening her eyes, moved closer: "Come closer."

He leaned slightly forward, his shoulder naturally moving closer to hers.

Xu Ranxi groggily opened one eye, glanced at him, and didn't say anything.

But the next second, she turned her head and leaned against him gently.

Kaka nestled in her arms, motionless.

Xu Qing observed through the rearview mirror, and a slight smile involuntarily appeared on her lips.

"Is Xixi asleep?" she asked softly.

"Yeah, she's asleep. She's been on the plane for so long, she must be tired," Zhang Muchen said.

Xu Qing nodded, said nothing more, and refocused her gaze on what lay ahead.

The night was deep, and the lights of the highway flashed past the car window.

She knew that she couldn't afford to be distracted on the highway at night.

The car slowly drove into the Sunshine Community, the light and shadow of the streetlights dappling the outside of the car window.

As soon as the car came to a stop, Kaka, who was in Xu Ranxi's arms, stirred slightly. She opened her eyes groggily, still looking somewhat dazed.

"Here's a tissue, wipe your mouth." Zhang Muchen handed over a tissue.

Xu Ranxi groggily took the tissue and subconsciously wiped her mouth. The tissue quickly became damp.

“You were drooling while you were asleep, and it got all over my clothes,” Zhang Muchen said, pointing to his shoulder.

"Huh?" Xu Ranxi instantly woke up, quickly sat up straight, and looked at his shoulder.

Sure enough, there were several clear water stains on the shoulders of the hoodie.

Xu Ranxi blushed, but quickly wrinkled her nose and muttered softly, "You came over here by yourself... it's not my fault."

“I didn’t blame you,” Zhang Muchen shrugged, “I’m just stating a fact.”

"Hmph, enough nonsense, get out of the car and help me with my suitcase."

As soon as she finished speaking, Xu Ranxi pushed open the car door and jumped out. A gust of cold wind immediately hit her face, and she subconsciously shivered, hugging her shoulders with her arms.

"Put your hat on properly," came Zhang Muchen's voice from behind.

As soon as she turned around, she felt a hand reach out and gently place the hat on her head.

The wind didn't seem so cold anymore.

Zhang Muchen walked to the back of the car and took the suitcase out of the trunk. The three of them, one in front and two behind, walked into the apartment building under the cover of night.

Upon reaching the third floor, Xu Qing did not go directly home, but instead stopped in front of Zhang Muchen's house.

"Mu Chen, let me take Xi Xi into your house to say hello first," she said with a smile.

"Oh, okay." Zhang Muchen nodded and took out his keys from his pocket.

The door opened, revealing a living room with soft lighting, but no one was there.

As Zhang Muchen changed his shoes, he called out, "Mom and Dad, I'm back! Come out and see who's here."

Hearing the noise at the door, the bedroom door opened, and Mei Yinglan grumbled as she came out, "What are you shouting for so late? It's making a lot of noise."

Before she could finish speaking, her gaze fell on the familiar figure at the door, and she suddenly stopped, frozen in place.

Xu Ranxi stood obediently at the door, her eyes filled with smiles, and softly called out, "Aunt Mei, I'm back. It's been a long time." "Xixi?" Mei Yinglan's eyes widened in surprise.

She immediately turned around and walked towards the study: "Beifang, come out quickly, Xixi is back."

Zhang Muchen stood in the entryway, watching his mother's almost frantic expression as she told everyone the news. He couldn't help but take a breath, then looked at Xu Ranxi.

"Why do you treat your trip back to China like it's New Year's? When I go home, all I get is to be scolded."

Xu Ranxi gave a light snort, her eyes and brows full of smugness. She changed into slippers and slid into the living room.

Shortly after, Zhang Beifang and Mei Yinglan came out of the study together.

"Xixi, you're back." Zhang Beifang greeted her with a smile. "It's been two or three years since we last met, hasn't it?"

"Xixi is getting prettier and prettier, and she's grown quite a bit taller too." Mei Yinglan couldn't help but take her hand, her eyes full of affection.

"Mom, Xu Ranxi has grown taller? I didn't notice." Zhang Muchen walked up to the group. "Xu Ranxi, come over here and let's compare heights."

"You're such a busybody!" Mei Yinglan rolled her eyes at him, annoyed. "Xixi's height is already quite good; she doesn't need to compare herself to you."

Zhang Beifang chimed in, "You little rascal, stop causing trouble and hurry up and pour Xixi and your Aunt Xu a glass of water."

"."

Zhang Muchen dejectedly went to the water dispenser to get some water.

As soon as Xu Ranxi returned, her treatment deteriorated.

In the living room, Mei Yinglan warmly pulled Xu Qing and Xu Ranxi to sit on the sofa. But before she could even settle in, Xu Ranxi got up, opened her suitcase, and took out several exquisitely wrapped gifts.

"Uncle and Aunt, this is a little gift I brought back from America. I hope you like it." She smiled and handed over the gift.

"Oh dear, Xixi, Auntie can't accept this." Mei Yinglan waved her hands repeatedly.

“Yes, yes, you’re too kind. We really can’t accept this.” Zhang Beifang quickly shook his head as well.

"Uncle and Aunt, this is a small token of my appreciation. I'll be sad if you don't accept it." Xu Ranxi stuffed the gift into their hands.

“We really can’t accept this…” Mei Yinglan pushed it back again.

As the two were still going back and forth, Zhang Muchen walked over while drinking water and casually picked up the gift, saying, "I'll accept it on behalf of my parents. Thank you, Xu Ranxi."

"Oh, you child..." Mei Yinglan couldn't help but frown slightly upon seeing this.

“Mom, this is a token of Xu Ranxi’s affection.” Zhang Muchen said seriously, “It’s pointless to keep refusing it.”

After saying that, he turned to look at Xu Ranxi: "What about me? Where is my gift?"

Xu Ranxi tilted her head: "There's none for you, I didn't prepare any."

"."

Mei Yinglan rolled her eyes at her son: "You actually reached out for it? You're so shameless."

"."

Zhang Muchen pursed his lips speechlessly, turned around and went back to his room, putting away the gift he was holding.

When he returned to the living room, he overheard Xu Qing and Mei Yinglan discussing Xu Ranxi's school selection.

“I hope Xixi can finish high school and go to university smoothly like other children. So I want her to transfer to No. 1 High School. I plan to complete the transfer procedures in the next couple of days,” Xu Qing said.

Mei Yinglan nodded repeatedly: "No. 1 Middle School is great. Mu Chen also studies there. The two of them can go to and from school together and look out for each other."

Xu Qing: "I've been so busy these past two days that I haven't had a chance to ask anyone for help."

Upon hearing this, Zhang Muchen immediately stepped forward: "Auntie, you don't need to find anyone for this. Just leave it to me."

“I’m familiar with school transfers; I have connections.”
