Chapter 209 Parting ways
Chapter 209 Parting ways
The car headed towards the hotel where Buddy was staying.
Inside the car, several colleagues were discussing the operation with Brian.
These agents were unaware of the truth behind the matter; their mission, as instructed by their superiors, was to "take in" Buddy.
“We’ve already spoken with Buddy’s agent and lawyer about the witness protection program, so our task is simple: find Buddy and get him out of this damn city,” a colleague said.
“It can’t be that simple, can it?” Brian asked. “I’ve received information that many assassins are also targeting Buddy. Taking him away won’t be that easy.”
“Don’t worry, Buddy has a lot of bodyguards himself, and don’t forget,” his colleague said, flashing his FBI badge, “we’re the FBI. The first reaction of those criminals when they see us is to run away if they don’t want to get caught.”
Brian was speechless. This thing couldn't stop bullets anyway, and who knew if those assassins would go crazy and take out the FBI too.
Little Yellow Hair has seen his share of big events. He went to Detroit with Old Pigeon and then to Los Angeles. He's witnessed the deaths of many high-ranking people, such as guild leaders and police detectives. The underworld doesn't really respect these official credentials.
Honestly, Brian really didn't want to get involved in this. Wasn't it comfortable racing with Mia and the others in Los Angeles?
Moreover, I am an undercover agent with a very sensitive identity, so why would I come here to do this kind of thing?
But the orders from above forced him to do as instructed.
Brian sensed an unease. It seemed his superiors had noticed something was wrong with him. After years of undercover work, he hadn't obtained any useful intelligence and had even been asked if he really wanted to become Mafia. He felt that in his superiors' eyes, he was less valuable than Buddy.
At least Buddy is a legitimate Mafia boss, and he can provide far more intelligence and information than I can.
This time, they were determined to take control of Buddy, the witness, no matter the cost, in order to crush the Mafia in one fell swoop.
Just as I was thinking this, my colleague suddenly asked, "Brian, any news from the Mafia? Luca the pigeon from New York suddenly showed up on the West Coast, it's most likely related to this."
“Not at the moment.” Brian shook his head. “Pigeon is in Los Angeles dealing with truck driver union matters; he doesn’t have time to come to Vegas.”
"Are you sure? I don't want any unexpected changes to happen."
“I’m sure,” Brian said with absolute certainty.
“Alright, alright.” My colleague shrugged. “As long as Pigeon doesn’t get involved, our chances are much better. Dealing with one family is troublesome enough, and I don’t want to deal with another one.”
Brian pulled out the documents in his hand, which contained information about Buddy and Spallanzan. It showed that Spallanzan had undergone numerous plastic surgeries, more than a dozen in total—nose, eyes, chin, and so on.
The crimes he committed were countless, including murder, extortion, arson, theft, and so on.
Brian asked curiously, "Sparazan killed one of our undercover agents, right? Why didn't we use that to prosecute him back then?"
This happened decades ago. After seeing the documents, Brian realized that the FBI had sent in undercover agents so long ago.
Colleague: "The undercover agent has been hidden. As long as the operation fails or is about to fail, the undercover agent will be removed from the list. The FBI will not recognize those failed undercover agents. Only successful undercover agents can regain their identities. Brian, aren't you doing very well in the Lucches family now? You should be close to succeeding, and then you can regain your identity."
Brian's heart skipped a beat.
Failed undercover work will not be recognized?
At that moment, he thought of himself. If he couldn't deliver anything useful for a long time, would he also be abandoned by the FBI one day?
If I die in a gang fight, I will be removed from the FBI and die as a gangster. All the files and information about me being an FBI agent will be hidden.
For some reason, Brian felt a sense of fear.
Am I now in a predicament where I can't back down?
I don't want to hurt the old pigeon, but I also don't want to do anything that goes against my duty. If the two conflict, what should I choose?
Before long, the car arrived at the hotel where Buddy was staying; he was in the top-floor luxury suite.
Brian looked at the building in front of him and couldn't help but break out in a cold sweat.
Hopefully the operation goes smoothly.
In the reception area in a corner of the hotel lobby, Lyon held a newspaper, reading it while reporting the situation to Luca.
Luca: "You don't need to get involved in the hotel matter. It's too chaotic there. There's no need to get entangled with those assassins. Go directly to the hospital later. Once the FBI brings Buddy over, they should be arranging the surgery as soon as possible. Then you'll have a chance to make your move and take them both out at the same time."
Luca had absolutely no interest in getting involved in the assassin brawl at the hotel; he would accept whatever the outcome was.
If Buddy dies, that would be best; if Buddy survives and is taken away by the FBI, then all we need to do is wait at the hospital and kill Spallanzan along with him.
“I’ve arranged for the mechanics to create chaos at the hospital, giving you an opportunity to act,” Luca continued, discussing the hospital arrangements with Leon. With the mechanics and his gang’s help, killing the father and son shouldn’t be difficult. Luca didn’t even bother going to Vegas himself for this; it was simply a matter of killing the father and son, and all the trouble would be resolved. Luca didn’t need to rack his brains for other bad ideas.
Instead of wasting time like this, you might as well work on the bonds between Toretto and the others.
“Okay,” Lyon replied succinctly.
After saying that, Lyon put down the newspaper and was about to get up and leave when a familiar figure suddenly appeared in his peripheral vision.
Brian walked into the lobby and followed several men toward the front desk.
A hint of doubt appeared in Lyon's eyes.
Why is that blond guy here?
He was unaware that Brian was an FBI undercover agent. Faced with this unexpected situation, Leon immediately abandoned the idea of going to the hospital and informed Luca of the news.
"Old Pigeon, Brian is also in the hotel."
Then Lyon heard Old Pigeon's surprised and uncertain voice coming from the phone.
"Brian? Are you sure it's him?"
"It's him."
"I understand, Leon. You keep an eye on him. I'm coming to Vegas now."
"You brat! How dare you lie to me?!"
They were supposed to go to Barstow to see their childhood friend, but they ended up in Vegas and even showed up at the hotel where Buddy was staying?
Considering Brian's background, Luca could easily guess what he used to do.
Immediately, Luca drove to Vegas at top speed.
Along the way, Luca opened the panel and glanced at his bond with Brian—[Friends.]
I've been friends with Brian for a long time, but we've never quite reached the point of being close friends. The reason is simple: there's a layer of disguise behind his undercover identity, a barrier between us, making it difficult for us to build a deeper level of trust.
At first, Luca never let Brian get involved in his criminal activities. Later, seeing that the kid was doing well, he started to let him participate little by little, starting with the gold case, then going to Detroit, and even showing Brian the existence of an undercover agent like Colin.
That kid Colin, Luca deliberately let Brian see him.
Use the undercover story to remind Brian.
Luca would much rather see the day when Brian would voluntarily reveal his identity to him, thus completely betraying the FBI and becoming one of his own.
Instead of forcing Brian to make a choice.
Luca has pressured many people, but he has never pressured the blond-haired guy.
Today's events cast a shadow over Luca's heart.
Brian should know very well how much trouble it would cause the Mafia if the FBI took control of Buddy. The Los Angeles family would be the first to be wiped out, and then other families would also be implicated.
At least Luca's petrol tax business on the west coast will be greatly affected.
"Does this guy still side with the FBI?"
Luca's gaze was deep and unfathomable.
Is Brian just too naive and simple-minded, or has he truly always chosen to work for the FBI?
"Brian, it's been almost three years."
"It's time to end it."
This incident is also an opportunity: will we become true close friends, or will we part ways?
