Chapter 107 Descending to Sainthood and Becoming a True Being
Master Qingwei pondered for a moment, then suddenly stood up and said to Han Yun, "Please come with me."
The two arrived at a secluded attic in the backyard.
Qingwei took out a yellowed silk scroll from the sandalwood box and solemnly said, "This is the 'Secret Essentials of Painting True to Life,' which records the technique of adding color to the eyes that the painter Ma Junxiang learned."
“Since the Yongle Palace was built during the Yuan Dynasty, it has been collected by the Quanzhen lineage and passed down through generations.”
Han Yun said solemnly, "Such a precious treasure, is this how you show it to people, Daoist?"
Qingwei shook his head and smiled, "No matter how precious the inheritance is, it is ultimately a dead thing if no one inherits it. In the past thirty years, very few people have been able to comprehend this technique. Today, seeing your extraordinary talent, fellow Daoist, may be the opportunity."
"Moreover, the foundation of my Quanzhen lineage is the Dao of Internal Alchemy. I have only dabbled in this art because I have loved painting since childhood. Even so, I was still scolded by my senior brother, the sect leader, for being ignorant and incompetent."
"It would be more convenient for you to help me, fellow Daoist. Besides, you are a member of my Daoist sect. The Lingbao Sect and the Quanzhen Sect are also of the same lineage. Helping each other out is nothing."
Upon hearing this, Han Yun stood up solemnly and bowed respectfully: "Master, your noble character will be remembered by Han Yun."
Subsequently, Han Yun exchanged the two cultivation manuals he obtained from Shuanglin Temple and Yuhuang Temple for them, and Daoist Qingwei accepted them as well.
Master Qingwei slowly unfurled the silk scroll.
The painting was densely covered with various painting techniques, from basic brush and ink techniques to the profound "spirit-adding" method, all in great detail.
The most striking pages are the last few, which depict the eyes of various mythical beasts and spirits, each pair so lifelike that they seem to leap off the page.
"The art of adding the finishing touch is to first and foremost 'observe its spirit'."
Qingwei pointed to the silk painting and explained, "The painter must first contemplate the true form of the object and capture its spirit, and then use Qi to guide the brush and infuse this spirit into the painting."
"For example, when painting a dragon, one must first understand the dragon's majesty; when painting a tiger, one must know the tiger's power; when depicting a crane, one must understand the crane's agility. If one does not capture the spirit, even if the technique is exquisite, it is nothing more than a lifeless object."
"Use your heart to guide the brush, use the brush to draw in the Qi, let the Qi permeate the painting, and let your spirit roam the vast void..."
Han Yun focused intently on the scroll, golden light swirling in his Heavenly Eye, and he memorized all the contents of the silk scroll.
The two exchanged words.
Seeing that Han Yun grasped the concept very quickly, Master Qingwei took out a jade brush, dipped it in special ink, and demonstrated on Xuan paper.
With a flick of his wrist, he sketched a soaring eagle, its wings outstretched, in a few moments.
When the final stroke touched the eagle's eyes, the whole painting suddenly came to life. The eagle on the paper let out a clear cry, and its wings fluttered, stirring up gusts of wind.
"At the moment of finishing touch, one must infuse a wisp of one's own divine will."
Qingwei finished writing and said, "This is the key to imbuing form with spirit. However, remember that each time you dot the eyes, you will consume your own essence, energy, and spirit, so you must not abuse it."
Han Yun seemed to be deep in thought. He took the jade brush, closed his eyes, and concentrated. The majestic image of the Weituo statue at Shuanglin Temple appeared in his mind, and the brush in his hand moved accordingly.
As the final stroke was completed, Wei Tuo's eyes suddenly shone with golden light, and the vajra in his hand seemed to emit a faint sound of thunder. The entire pavilion resounded with chanting, as if a guardian deity had truly descended.
Upon seeing this, Qingwei exclaimed in amazement, "Fellow Daoist Han is indeed exceptionally talented, reaching such a level on his first attempt!"
Han Yun did not stop writing. He immediately painted another picture of Lü Zu subduing a dragon. Han Yun had actually seen the body of a dragon, so the ink dragon he painted was even more enchanting and lively.
Beneath the dragon's body was a vast ocean wave, painted with bold strokes of ink. The dragon's claws were ferocious, its fangs fierce, its eyes bloodshot and bulging with fury as it stared intently at Lü Zu. Lü Zu, meanwhile, stood atop the dragon's back, his Taoist robes billowing. He held the dragon's mane with one hand, while his other hand held a sharp sword pointed directly at the dragon's vital point, the tip of the sword gleaming as if it would pierce the paper.
As Han Yun was dotting Lü Zu's eyes, a thought suddenly struck him. He mobilized the Qi of Dan Yun, a trace of inner vision energy, and a vast amount of primordial Qi to complete the eye-dotting.
This transformed Lü Zu's eyes into piercing golden pupils. In the painting, Lü Zu had sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes, and the majestic and murderous aura in his eyes was captivating. Suddenly, the entire painting burst forth with a clear light.
The painting depicts swirling clouds and roaring waves, with dragons and Lü Dongbin seemingly leaping off the paper to fight.
Just then, the statue of Lu Zu inside Chunyang Palace began to move rapidly, and the accumulated incense and prayers from hundreds of years seemed to find an outlet, surging out like a madman.
The seven-colored incense and prayers continuously surged towards the Lu Zu Subduing the Dragon Diagram, and gradually, a hint of Daoist wisdom truly arose in Lu Zu's eyes.
Then, the incense and prayers enveloped it, and before Han Yun and Daoist Qingwei, it transformed into the phantom of Lu Zu's figure.
The illusory figure of Lu Zu chanted: "Cultivating both nature and life is profound and mysterious, riding the Dharma boat on the vast ocean waves. Capturing the dragon's head alive, one then knows that the craftsman's skill is not in vain."
The sound was like the tinkling of gold and jade, echoing endlessly within the pavilion.
Master Qingwei hurriedly straightened his clothes and bowed, but was supported by a gentle force.
Lu Zu's illusory figure had a gentle gaze and nodded to Han Yun, saying, "Young friend, your writing reveals true meaning, even able to arouse a wisp of divine thought in this humble Daoist. However, it is better not to solidify this evil dragon into a real one."
Having said that, he flicked his finger, and the dragon in the painting instantly turned into ink blots and disappeared.
Then, Lu Zu looked at his incense-burning body and said to himself with a self-deprecating smile, "True man, divine man, are they but the gathering and dispersing of the wishes of all living beings? They are useless to keep."
"How about making a gift for my young friend!"
Under the astonished gazes of Han Yun and Daoist Qingwei, Lu Zu's figure gradually faded, and colorful energy particles continued to emanate, eventually turning pure white.
The pure white phantom solidified again, transforming into a dragon-slaying sword. This sword was formed from the pure power of incense offerings and vows, and its intent was pure Yang, containing the purpose of slaying dragons and eliminating demons.
Then, the Pure Yang Sword hummed, and its blade emitted a dazzling white light, as clear and cool as autumn water.
Before the sword had even moved, a chilling sword aura surged forth, causing the temperature inside the pavilion to plummet, as if even the air itself had been frozen by the sword intent.
"I sail to Cangwu at dawn and return at dusk; in the cave, I am the heaven of the sun and moon. The precious sword in its sheath roars constantly; I swear I will not pass it on unless I find a like-minded person."
“Wonderful! Wonderful! This sword is named Chunyang, a product of the collective wishes of all living beings. I present it to you today, my young friend.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the sword transformed into a streak of light and plunged straight into Han Yun's brow.
Han Yun felt a cool sensation in his mind, and a sword seemed to ring out in his third eye. Upon looking inward, he saw a small white jade sword floating in his sea of consciousness, its blade flowing with pure yang energy.
Master Qingwei was dumbfounded. It took him a long time to come to his senses. He said in a trembling voice, "Master Lü has manifested his holiness. This... this is a descent of a saint into the realm of immortality!"
The so-called "descent of saints" actually originates from the concept of "worshiping the true saints," which is a method of the "flowing" school.
"Chaozhen" means to pay homage to the gods and immortals. Taoists, through specific rituals or practices, imagine themselves riding the clouds into the sky to pay homage to the gods and immortals.
"Descent of the Saints" refers to inviting deities to descend, hoping that through sincere prayer and spiritual practice, the gods will come to earth to bestow blessings and dispel calamities.
