Chapter 636 Goddess of Destiny 3
Chapter 636 The Three Fates
The Norn sisters, also known as the three Norse goddesses of fate, are a very important part of Norse mythology. They are Urd, who governs the past; Verdandi, who governs the present; and Skadi, who governs the future.
An NPC who appears very rarely in comics, so rarely that almost no works have anything to do with them. But Peter vaguely remembers that they seem to be the three Fates of Greece, because there is a loom of fate from Greek mythology in the place where they live.
So Peter simply asked Thor, "Who exactly are the Three Fates? I mean, aside from the myths that everyone knows."
“I don’t know either. Neither Nornheim nor the Norns sisters have much contact with us. Nornheim is a special region of Asgard, directly connected to the Well of Urd that nourishes the roots of the World Tree. The inhabitants also call themselves Norns rather than Asars, which makes them seem somewhat out of place.”
Thor was taking Peter to Nornheim. After a moment's thought, Peter came to the only connection he had with the Three Fates: "Could it be related to the Web of Fates? They have a Loom of Fates, and I am connected to the Web of Fates."
Upon hearing this, Thor laughed for some reason.
"Well, that's certainly possible, but I suspect it's different from what you're thinking. The Norns sisters do indeed hold a certain degree of control over destiny, but the web of fate is far too vast for them. Alright, we've arrived at the Norns' Norn Castle."
The Asgardians guarding the area clearly didn't have a good impression of anyone, including Thor, and stopped him directly: "Halt, son of Odin, the Queen did not invite you."
“My presence here has nothing to do with your queen; the Norns sisters invited this mortal.”
After watching Peter for a while, the guard obediently stood aside. Peter landed, somewhat confused, and followed Thor inside. Norn Queen... uh, isn't that a Warhammer swarm unit?
"Queen Norn is..."
"Carnila, the ruler of Nornheim, is said to be a student of the Norns, the three Norns, and possesses the most magic in Asgard. She is also skilled in using Nornstone, a type of stone that can open dimensional portals anywhere and was once said to be the only way to leave our universe."
Ah, I think I remember now. It appeared in the EMH animation. It only lasted a few scenes before being instantly killed by a third-rate villain who could petrify people, and then all the Norn Stones under his command were stolen by Loki and Amora.
"It sounds like a place Loki would care about."
It's unclear whether Peter mentioned Loki, but Thor sighed as the two walked through the magnificent, ancient castle. Somewhat unexpectedly, Thor led Peter to a place resembling a cellar and went straight inside. Peter glanced at the surroundings and then followed him in.
The three Fates live in a rather...unique place.
The two traveled through the underground cellar for a while, and the surrounding environment remained unchanged until light appeared ahead, indicating that they were arriving at their destination. Saul went through the tunnel first, and Peter followed.
On the other side of the tunnel was a pond filled with birdsong and fragrant flowers. Huge tree roots were stuck directly into the water. A quaint little house sat by the pond, and three women were busy at their looms. The youngest girl sat on the loom weaving silk threads, the beautiful woman pulled the threads apart to determine their length, and finally the elderly woman cut the threads with scissors.
This is not Norse mythology; this should be Greek mythology.
“Norns, I’ve brought Peter Parker.”
“Peter Parker, son of Richard,” the old woman said, cutting the silk thread with scissors. “Messenger of the web of fate, connector, why have you come?”
Peter was completely bewildered by the question for the first time. Thor whispered a suggestion from the side: "The Norns sisters mean that if you have any questions, they can give you vague prophecies." "No, thank you. Well, I have a riddle-telling prophetic advisor. I don't know if you know her, Lady Spider, the interpreter of the web of fate."
Peter's answer silenced the three Fates for a long while, before the beautiful woman continued, "Son of Richard, do you know what this is?"
She pulled out a thread from her hand. Peter looked at it, unsure what it was: "Generally speaking, you would say this is my thread of fate, and that fate is unavoidable... is that right?"
“We cannot tear any thread from the web of fate; it is a creation of Ness’s magic. We will weave it just like Ness—weave fate, and that is the purpose. Son of Richard, what we need to warn you is that once your threads of fate become entangled in the story of Ragnarok, it will cause the entire course of fate to become chaotic and uncontrollable.”
Before Peter could say anything, Thor perked up. If that's the case, wouldn't Spider-Man be able to directly change the fate of Ragnarok?
"Ragnarok is an unchangeable fact, Odinson. He may be able to change the outcome of Ragnarok, but he cannot change its arrival." The young girl spoke last, and Peter pondered with a hint of confusion after listening to what they had to say.
Are you telling me this as a... warning?
"We don't intend to stop any of your actions, but simply to inform you in advance of what might happen. As compensation, you can ask fate questions."
Compensation? What kind of compensation? Compensation that makes me keep working myself to the bone?
Peter looked at the three Fates with some uncertainty, and then asked them his first question.
"What exactly are these so-called Shadow Gods?"
Thor looked at Peter in confusion. He had never heard of any Shadow Gods. Faced with this question, the three Fates remained silent for a long time before finally giving up and choosing to compromise.
"Please ask another question."
"Uh? Oh, okay." Peter didn't seem to care about the answer, or perhaps he just wanted to probe these charlatans, so he asked a question that was genuinely relevant to the present: "What gives Loki and the others the confidence to rebel against Odin? Even all of them combined couldn't defeat Odin, right?"
Upon hearing this question, the three Fates immediately perked up, with the old woman representing the past speaking up: "Odin created his own enemy, an enemy that he himself could hardly defeat, and who might even kill him."
Next, the girl representing the future said: "That enemy will completely destroy Asgard, rendering Odin powerless to interfere with the other worlds of the Nine Realms."
"When?"
Peter and Thor asked the question almost simultaneously, and then the three Fates smiled slightly at the same time.
The reason they called Spider-Man was for this very reason.
To ensure the smooth arrival of Ragnarok.
"Now."
