Chapter 619 Strange is powerless
Chapter 619 Strange is powerless
Peter quickly went to the Sanctum Sanctorum. He assumed that the all-knowing Strange must already know about it, but when Peter told Strange that "Amora stole the Casket of Winter and gave it to the Atlantean rebels," Strange's expression became truly fascinating.
"This world has finally gone mad and become something I don't recognize."
Strange was completely speechless at the question, and instead asked Peter in bewilderment, "Why not let the people of Olympus and Asgard handle this themselves?"
“I don’t know either, but Thor said it wouldn’t work, though he doesn’t know exactly why.” After repeating himself, Peter asked Strange, “Is there any way to solve the Winter’s Chest?”
"Theoretically, it's very simple. As long as you are strong enough to withstand the severe cold brought by the Winter Treasure Box, you can just close it."
"Could Thor or Hulk do that?"
“How would I know? Apart from the Frost Giants, no one has ever been so foolish as to open this thing.” Strange rolled his eyes at Peter. “The Frost Giants have a bloodline advantage that allows them to resist the power of the Winter’s Casket, so they are the best candidates to close it. As for others, no one has tried except Odin, but I doubt that Odin could close the Winter’s Casket now.”
"Huh? Why?" Peter didn't understand Strange's meaning for a moment: "Shouldn't Odin be stronger now than he was in the past?"
"A characteristic of the Norse gods is that they become stronger with age, but their bodies cannot support their growing power. This is why Odin sleeps every year to maintain the balance between his body and power, and his sleep time increases with age."
At this point, Strange, who was flipping through a book, turned to look at Peter and explained the nature of Fimbulwinter: "Fimbulwinter is not simply cold, but a magical storm. If Odin were to close the opened Winter's Treasure Box, he would be 'frozen' for a short time, and even if he entered hibernation, he would be unable to adjust the balance of his body and divine power."
"Odin is at his most vulnerable at this time."
"Yes, that's why the Almighty Father was defeated in Ragnarok. Fimbulwinter prevented him from maintaining the balance between his divine power and his body during Odin's Slumber. And if he were to close the opened Winter's Chest, he would most likely fall into a weakened state prematurely."
Peter nodded. He was about to ask Thor if this troublesome situation could be avoided when he suddenly realized something: "But our world hasn't fallen into an ice age, which means the Winter's Chest hasn't been fully opened yet."
"Or rather, it wasn't opened to the point where it couldn't be closed. The Atlanteans who used this weapon clearly had all the information and knew what would happen once the Winter's Chest was fully opened." Strange felt even more confused after saying this. If that was the case, then the Enchantress Amora should have been involved in the whole affair to a much greater extent. Why were both Asgard and Olympus indifferent?
Or is this what they intend to see?
"In any case, if you want my help, I am powerless to do so. I have no way to stop the Winter's Chest from opening. However, since this is a matter for the magical world, I can join your efforts to prevent the Winter's Chest from being opened completely."
After Strange finished speaking, he noticed Peter staring at him and asked, puzzled, "What's wrong, Spider-Man?"
“The Time Stone.” Peter’s sudden words seemed to strike Strange like a blow. He paused for a moment, then said, slowly and deliberately, “No, it won’t work.”
"Why? You can manipulate the Time Stone, can't you?"
After Kang the Conqueror was defeated, the Time Stone was "borrowed" by Strange. Rather than everyone acknowledging that Strange was in charge of it, it's more accurate to say that Strange acted quickly, and the Sorcerer Supreme did indeed possess the ability to do so, leading to tacit acceptance. Thus, quite inexplicably, the Time Stone ended up with the Sorcerer Supreme again.
Now is the time for the Sorcerer Supreme to activate the Time Stone. If the Time Stone can function, even if the Winter's Chest is fully opened, it can be reversed, providing a guaranteed outcome for the Avengers' actions.
But Strange refused.
“You know perfectly well what the consequences would be if this artifact were misused, Spider-Man. The laws of nature are what we must abide by, and that’s what makes Kamar-Taj sorcerers different from other dark sorcerers.”
"But this situation is critical. If we can't stop the enemy, the whole world may be destroyed."
Strange almost blurted out, "Aren't there enough worlds on the verge of destruction already?" but he held back. He understood Spider-Man, and he understood why many people wanted to use abilities, including magic, to alter reality and create a better future.
"This has nothing to do with kindness and justice, Spider-Man. Imagine if we used the Time Stone to 'save the world' this time, then next time we'd use it to 'save a city,' and the time after that, to 'revive someone.'"
"The most terrifying thing about the Time Stone is that it doesn't require any price to pay, and that is the price. We will find that everything is irrelevant, we can act as we please without considering the consequences, whether it is the destruction of the world or an accident that causes many deaths, we only need the Time Stone to save everything. In the end, we will disregard life, disregard rules, and be indifferent to the lives of others."
After Strange finished speaking, he looked at Peter and added, "I'm not saying you'll become like that, kid, but we need to consider how many people this will affect. So I'm sorry, but if we fail this time and the world is destroyed as a result, we'll have to bear the consequences. Rather, it's precisely because we have to face the consequences that we need to act."
Peter Parker didn't entirely agree with that statement. He knew that if he had the Time Stone, he would definitely use it more actively, but he also knew that from Strange's perspective, his concerns were valid.
"Okay, then I'll head back."
“Wait a minute.” Strange interrupted Peter. “Remember when Mephisto came to Earth? I’ve got some leads on that. Want to hear about it?”
