Chapter 603 I Want to Be an Astronaut
“Spider-Man, Cletus had preemptively taken control of some NASA employees, and they locked the rocket’s launch procedure. We couldn’t stop the launch.”
Coulson delivered the first piece of bad news, while Peter was still on the rocket, battling a large number of symbiotes: "I have to say this isn't the worst of it. Can you determine the blast radius of the rocket?"
"The blast radius cannot be determined yet, so you'd better not do it."
Having roughly understood Spider-Man's meaning, Fitz immediately drew a conclusion and warned Spider-Man that although it was an unmanned launch and they had already begun evacuating the surrounding staff, there were too many variables, and he couldn't be sure how much trouble the launch fuel could cause if it exploded.
And there's an even more troublesome issue—what if this explosion also fails to kill Carnage?
“Okay, let me think!” Peter punched Carnage in the face, but this time, Carnage was blown in the head. Instead, more and more Carnages appeared, covering the surface of the rocket. These guys were spawning more and more like roadside monsters.
Moreover, it's not the kind of thing where they become mass-produced and multiply like regular soldiers; it's more like the level of late-game elite monsters and regular minions in Soul Journey, although anti-venom can still kill them instantly.
However, according to the system's detection, none of them were Cletus himself; he must have hidden inside the rocket.
"Okay, how quickly can you regain control of the launch pad and modify the rocket's launch trajectory? There should be about 120 seconds between liftoff and fairing separation. Is that possible?"
Coulson glanced at the scene. Ward, May, and Spider-Woman were all engaged in full-scale combat, wearing modified versions of the same terrifying gear. Their protective suits were designed to completely disintegrate symbiotes upon close-quarters contact. However, there were simply too many symbiotes; they probably couldn't be dealt with in a short time.
"We're doing our best. Fitz and Skye are remotely accessing the system and modifying the launch trajectory. What are your thoughts?"
"Launch the rocket into the Atlantic Ocean!"
Launch a rocket into the Atlantic Ocean? Coulson paused for a moment before understanding Spider-Man's idea: "I understand, but... but what about you? How are you going to dodge such a wide-range attack?"
"I have my own way."
Peter quickly hung up the communication. The entire surface of the rocket was now almost entirely covered with a dense layer of red symbiotes. A viscous substance, like blood vessels, churned on the rocket's surface, making one wonder if the thing could even launch normally. Peter's task was very simple: he placed his hands directly on the rocket's surface and began to purify the symbiotes with his anti-venom.
Carnage quickly emerged to stop him. Four or five Carnages simultaneously sprang out of the rocket, conjuring various sharp weapons and slashing at Peter. Peter, however, used his mind to control his nanosuit, which instantly produced four sharp claws on his back, nimbly blocking the Carnage minions' attacks while methodically carrying out purification. In just a few dozen seconds, the symbiotic biomass on the entire rocket surface was completely wiped out.
But things were different inside. Peter wasn't sure he could spread the anti-venom that much, so he punched a massacre soldier to the ground.
"60 seconds until ignition, Spider-Man, we haven't cracked the system yet!" Coulson stood at the Airbus base, looking at the chaos at NASA's launch center. "We might not be able to adjust the rocket's trajectory through the system. We'll have to rely on you." "Great—I just need to get one of the rockets that can get me into space at the right angle and everything will be fine."
Coulson listened to Spider-Man's self-deprecating humor with a hint of helplessness, then had Fitz pass the calculated data to Peter: "Fitz has calculated how to move the rocket. You need to move it according to the tutorial. I believe you can do it, Spider-Man."
“Yes, I believe I can do it too.” Peter said, eliminating the last massacre soldier. “Otherwise, we’ll see the massacre spread all over the world—a global genocide, and I don’t like that.”
He glanced down, then continued his ascent, climbing as high as possible before pressing himself against the rocket's surface. Before launch, he shouted to Cletus, "Cletus? Why don't you come out and talk? You have no idea what I've prepared for you. I'm sure you'll like it—"
A tremendous thrust emerged from directly beneath the rocket, the boosters ignited, and the intense feeling of gravity nearly threw Peter off. He realized the rocket had ignited and was about to take off, and from now until the fairing separated, he had only 118 seconds to finish the massacre.
If Cletus cannot be eliminated within these 118 seconds, and the fairing separates, the organization responsible for the massacre may end up in some unknown corner of the Earth, causing even more trouble.
Now, if Cletus doesn't come out, Peter will have no choice but to try...
Cletus appeared, or more accurately, Carnage appeared. The terrifying monster seeped out from directly below the rocket, tightly binding Peter's limbs. Then, a humanoid figure materialized, and the two-meter-tall, ferocious Carnage stood on the rocket that was rapidly ascending into the air, looking down at Peter.
“You’re such a naive fool, Spider-Man. I knew you’d come after me, so I prepared this trap.” As Carnage’s face was revealed, Cletus’s face was shown. He looked at Peter mockingly: “Of course I knew you could return to the ground with a magic portal, so I set up this situation where you have to solve the problem. And before you can solve me, I’ll solve you!”
He didn't attack; instead, he did a backflip to dodge Spider-Man's punch. He knew, of course, that these symbiotes could be easily dealt with. And for this purpose, Carnage, with the help of Knull's remaining consciousness, underwent specialization.
Peter watched as the symbiote before him no longer possessed that disgusting fluid quality, but instead hardened, becoming like armor.
“I have to remind you of something: from a biological evolutionary perspective, armoring has never been the optimal solution. And of course I know this is a trap; our understanding is only slightly off—that is, I know I can completely eliminate you in two minutes.”
Despite the immense G-force, Peter stood up on the surface of the rocket as it launched, then looked at Carnage: "Hardening yourself for defense? That means you're finally willing to step in yourself, isn't it?"
