Chapter 474 The Avengers' Expansion Plan
Chapter 474 The Avengers' Expansion Plan
That afternoon, Carol Danvers spent in a daze; the president hadn't given her enough time to think. She agreed to it after a barrage of rhetoric from the president, and then went to the press conference with him.
She hadn't attended any press conferences, and given the notoriously low quality of American journalists, she was immediately bombarded by the media after the president announced that Carole would form the "Ultimate Team" to replace the American Avengers.
Then she told the whole truth, which was exactly what the president wanted.
"To be honest, she looked rather pathetic in front of those reporters." Three days later, Tony, a seasoned veteran of the media scene, passed by Captain America doing push-ups with one hand and saw the newspaper headline on the floor. He couldn't help but laugh: "She answered every question. She answered whatever the reporters asked. Even though it was a White House press conference, she ended up being the one being interviewed."
"Her frankness makes it sound like the US government is determined to build a real team of heroes."
The captain did push-ups while chatting, not a drop of sweat falling onto the newspaper: "Of course, if President Ellis really does unconditionally support this new team as he says, perhaps they really can make a name for themselves."
Tony laughed when he heard this.
"Stop talking, Captain. You know what? Rhodes has been calling me these past two days complaining about this. He met Carol while he was in the hospital and became the first member of this new team. Then they started discussing who else they should recruit."
“Rhodes said, ‘Have you considered Ares? He’s a god after all.’ Carol, of course, refused, and then they went to Hercules, you know?” Tony laughed heartily, as if he had thought of something amusing. “Hercules said, ‘For honor, I can’t join a team full of intrigue and evil.’ You know what’s the funniest thing? Hercules was on the Agor in mythology, which means that in his eyes, the US government is not even as good as those Greek scum!”
The captain wasn't entirely sure how many scoundrels were among the Argonauts in Greek mythology besides Jason, but he had to admit that, by all accounts, the US government wasn't exactly trustworthy right now.
"Then the two of them had a fight. Rhodes still thought they should go to Ares, after all, the Avengers have a god, so they should have a god too. But Carol couldn't hold back and said that she could just be Thor's counterpart, and they would just need to find a newcomer to be Thor's counterpart. Then Rhodes said that she actually went to Frank Cassel."
Ms. Marvel's idea of having the Punisher join the Ultimate Team was utterly terrible. Naturally, the Punisher rejected the offer. In addition, Carol Danvers approached Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, but the latter was also unwilling to serve the US government, even if it was merely a formality.
The captain listened silently, but he could tell that Tony had something else on his mind and wanted to discuss it with him.
"Speaking of which, I'm thinking that the Avengers should expand their recruitment. We've been established for almost a year. Excluding Janet, who was already in the team, we've only recruited two people. One of them, T'Challa, is a king and can't possibly participate in all our operations."
Tony finally explained the situation: "Perhaps we need to recruit more, Captain."
The captain stopped doing push-ups and stood up.
"Perhaps not. The Avengers are a banner. When we face an insurmountable enemy, we can call on everyone instead of expanding the entire Avengers into an army, Tony."
“Even so, we still need to ensure our attendance. I have a great idea. What about Mar-Vell? He's an alien, he won't be involved in any political forces, and he's a scientist and a pacifist, he's unlikely to turn against us. Finally, I spoke with him, and the Kree's supreme leader is actually a super artificial intelligence. They've found a way for artificial intelligence and life to coexist harmoniously, which will be very helpful to us.” “Mar-Vell is a good man, I agree.”
Tony was stunned. He had thought the captain would refuse, but the captain actually agreed. Of course, the captain had something left unsaid: even if he agreed, Mar-Vell himself had to agree. But Tony didn't think that was a problem.
So they began to discuss the next issue, which was the requirement for expansion.
“Okay, maybe we can make a list, Captain, and list all the superheroes in the world and look for those who are credible and have the potential to join the Avengers.”
“We can’t send untrained soldiers into battle, Tony. Not everyone is Spider-Man.” The captain shook his head, and Tony shrugged dismissively. “Then what do you suggest? Should we open an Avengers Academy? Hmm? That’s a good idea.”
“I know you’ve been thinking that the enemies we face are getting stronger and stronger, and one day even Hulk and Thor will not be a match for them.”
“There’s no need for someday, Captain. We’ve already seen Nimrod.”
"But war is not an easy thing. Apart from the Battle of New York and the Nar symbiote invasion, we have hardly had any battles that can be called large-scale battles, and those can't even be called wars, just campaigns. We prevented the landing."
The captain's rebuttal resonated with Tony, but it only energized him: "Exactly, Captain! How can we win a war if we don't have enough troops?"
“An army alone is not enough, especially a large number of soldiers without combat experience. We also need a stable rear, all allies we can unite, and most importantly, everyone’s firm determination to resist the invasion.” The captain sighed helplessly: “The French are said to have the world’s best army, but they lack the will to fight. You know what happened in the end.”
"That's why you're so interested in Magneto's children. You want to win Magneto over and make Genosha a friend of the Avengers."
Captain America rolled his eyes at Tony: "I want to reduce our enemies, find common ground, and prove to the world that Magneto might actually be able to turn over a new leaf and stand on our side when necessary."
"Ok."
Tony ultimately didn't stick to his own opinion, and instead had Jarvis open a huge list: "But at least, let's recruit a group of people from this list first."
Let me briefly explain some of the disagreements between the two of them.
