Chapter 434 Let me make this clear first, my salary is really high.
As the violent explosion subsided, amidst the ruins, Peter, who had erected a magical shield, moved the boulder that had been blocking the two of them, while Cindy held the totem pole in her hand.
Perhaps it was because he had been using too much magic lately, Peter felt a little listless. He reached out his hand to Cindy: "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine..."
Cindy shook her head, brushing some of the pebbles off her hair. She looked around and then at the totem pole in her hand. This was the thing that was affecting their spider-sense.
Peter sighed; he had pretty much figured things out.
Back when Richard Parker was researching the Savage Power project, a mysterious man with spider abilities appeared. He persuaded Richard Parker to use spiders as the main target of Savage Power and showed him something, which made Richard agree to go to Taranto to conduct on-site research on the Taranto tarantula.
Later, after S.H.I.E.L.D. hired the Parker couple to investigate the unknown super soldiers in Europe, Richard encountered his old friend, the mysterious man. The man was drawn to the totem pole, leading them to discover the Hydra organization in Budapest.
They thought they had slipped away unnoticed, but Hydra eventually discovered them. The mysterious figure remained a mystery to Hydra, so they had no choice but to deal with the Parker couple who had come to investigate.
But the problem is...
Since Nick Fury learned that the enemy was Hydra through the deaths of the Parker couple, he must have received some intelligence. What kind of intelligence made him so certain of Hydra's existence, and Hydra so certain that Richard Parker's intelligence would reveal its existence?
Peter was completely baffled, just as he didn't know who the woman who sold the spider totem to Hydra was. It couldn't possibly be Lady Spider, could it?
“Let’s hurry, or our spider-sense won’t be able to function properly along the way with this,” Peter pulled Cindy aside. “The fighting is still going on around us.”
The two left the warehouse, which was now just rubble and broken bricks. Peter looked around and saw that there was nothing useful left behind. They had barely climbed out when their spider senses, enhanced by the totem, went off like crazy. The two of them did somersaults in unison and landed like superheroes.
Dozens of Hydra soldiers blocked their way, along with a massive Hydra robot.
And the master of imitation who led them.
“If you knew me, you would know that everything you do from now on is within my predictions. Unless you are a madman like Wade Wilson, you cannot do anything beyond my expectations.”
As Taskmaster spoke, he drew his sword and shield: "And, there's one more thing I need to tell you."
Peter and Cindy were on high alert.
"Hydra paid me a really high salary, a really high salary."
Surrounded by heavily armed men, Cindy couldn't help but tilt her head.
"What do you mean by 'your salary is really high'?" Peter fired a web first, but Taskmaster had anticipated it. At the same time Peter fired, Taskmaster raised his sword. Flames flashed on the sword, burning the web into charred protein. Then Taskmaster repeated, "It means, my salary is really high."
"If the money isn't enough, who's going to risk their lives against you bunch of superpowered freaks?" "I have a question. Shouldn't you be a former instructor at S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Peter didn't rush up to punch Taskmaster. Instead, he jumped up and fired spider webs in all directions, smothering the pesky Hydra soldiers against nearby walls and the ground. "Isn't S.H.I.E.L.D. paying enough?"
“Nick Fury’s salary is definitely not enough! I’m just an instructor at S.H.I.E.L.D.! Instructor! Where would I get so much money!”
Taskmaster skillfully carved a path through the overwhelming swarm of spiderweb bullets, ensuring his cloak wouldn't even get grazed. Peter, after landing, looked at the remaining enemies—only Taskmaster and the robot—and asked curiously, "Why don't you go do some missions and make some big money?"
“Because Nick Fury doesn’t trust me. He thinks I would sell mission information for higher profits. Of course, I wouldn’t do that voluntarily unless they approach me and offer a really high price. After all, I have to protect my professional reputation.”
Peter paused for a moment, then looked at Taskmaster: "So Nick Fury really wasn't wrong? Why don't you try defecting? You might be able to sell Hydra intelligence for a good price."
"Budapest is your burial ground, Spider-Man. I'm not making this up, it's the truth. Ever since Hydra realized they might be exposed, this place has been your graveyard. Even if you escape, Budapest will fall. They'll cut off all the leads and leave in time."
"Since cutting off one head results in two more growing back, Hydra wouldn't mind cutting off one to preserve the other two."
Peter sensed something was off. Why did Taskmaster seem to be there to...bargain rather than stop them? Even the Hydra robot next to him remained completely still.
No, perhaps Taskmaster is just negotiating. He wants to see if the Avengers can solve the current problem. If they can, then naturally, he can also negotiate, and he can also fight against Hydra.
"Iron Man and Ant-Man have gone to stop the self-destruct program."
“They’re not enough. Anim Zola has transformed himself into a kind of data deluge; he’s a ghost living in the network, and Tony Stark’s little helper is no match for him.”
"Didn't you know? Dr. Pym developed a new artificial intelligence, Ultron, and he brought it with him. This artificial intelligence was developed based on his brainwaves and has the same intelligent thinking as him."
Taskmaster was deep in thought when, a second later, the Hydra robot next to him exploded, and he dropped his weapon and surrendered.
Peter then asked the question he had wanted to ask.
"You're just surrendering like this? Aren't you afraid of being punished later?"
“Hydra has already hidden what they need to hide, and I can handle any of the methods used against me.” Taskmaster revealed a truth Peter didn’t know: “The reason Waterman died in Venice was not because he wanted to surrender, but because he surrendered too soon.”
"After today, the whole world will know that Hydra has not been destroyed, which is exactly what Hydra needs."
