Chapter 430: One head is cut off, two grow back.
What kind of secret base can be considered "massive"?
Peter Parker had no prior knowledge of the subject. He had visited the Tri-Flying Tower once, which was the headquarters of S.H.I.E.L.D., an office building over 200 meters tall.
So, what would you think if you saw a giant statue that was clearly a parody of the Statue of Liberty, standing atop a "Mount Rushmore" with the Red Skull, Zemo, and Baron Strange, almost as tall as the Three Towers and not even reaching the top of the space?
Hydra completely disregarded space utilization, excavating a massive space nearly 300 meters high and tens of kilometers in diameter 700 meters below Budapest—practically reaching beneath the city itself. Hydra soldiers patrolled everywhere, and everything was orderly.
They were like they were preparing for the apocalypse, like those villainous organizations that planned to destroy the whole world and then emerge from here to establish a new order.
Perhaps it's not just a resemblance.
Peter took a deep breath. This place was beyond what he could investigate by himself in a short time. What puzzled him was how such a vast underground space could not be detected by the detection equipment of S.H.I.E.L.D. and other organizations.
No... wait, there seems to be a place that their underground space cannot be discovered either—the spider temple hidden underground!
"And the disappearance of the statues of the four ancient gods in the Roman Pantheon means that Hydra took them away and created a similar barrier. Does that mean there are at least four such superbases around the world?"
Peter was exasperated by this underground space that defied all the laws of physics. He sighed helplessly, shrugged, and headed straight for the most obvious facility in the entire city. The layout of the entire Hydra underground base had a classical Third Reich style, advocating Romanesque architecture and the aesthetic philosophy that bigger is better. As long as you found the largest one, located on the central axis of symmetry, you were good to go.
"Come on, let me see what you've been hiding... Isn't this the Pantheon in Rome? It's almost exactly the same."
Peter muttered to himself as he approached the Pantheon. The doors were open, and inside stood several statues, some of which appeared to be those of past leaders of Hydra. They seemed to be imitating the emperors of ancient Rome, attempting to deify themselves. After muttering to himself for a while, Peter looked at the central statue.
He finally found an answer to one of his many questions.
[His name was Seth, also known as Tiamat, the Book of Revelation, and Leviathan. His existence was erased by Gaia and replaced by gods from various places, taking the form of a seven-headed sea serpent instead of a nine-headed serpent.]
The words that Peter understood without needing to read the text beneath the statue appeared in his mind, and Peter instantly grasped everything: the image and origin of the Hydra came from Set, a demon god of the same level as Sithon, and this terrifying god was right here.
but……
The sudden force struck Peter almost instantly. It was so sudden that even his spider senses couldn't react in time. The statue of Set in front of him seemed to come alive in an instant, unleashing a powerful attack on him. Peter barely managed to dodge it.
Of course, it wasn't entirely without cost—he was exposed.
“Spider-Man, I’ve been wondering if Captain America would be the first to arrive here, but you’ve given me a surprise.” An aged voice came from inside. Peter turned around and saw a bald, frail old man leaning on a cane appear at the temple’s entrance, smiling at Spider-Man: “We haven’t had any guests here for a long time since Richard Parker. It seems like fate.”
A whole squad of Hydra soldiers rushed to the temple entrance, raising their weapons and aiming at Peter. Just then, one slingshot after another opened, and Captain America and Logan in Budapest, as well as Tony and the others in New York, all arrived there.
Tony looked at his screen and couldn't help but complain: "My data shows that we are more than 700 meters underground—well, that explains why we have never found Hydra's secret base."
“Wolfgang von Strucker.” The captain raised his shield and looked at the elderly man before him. Even after seventy years, he still recognized his enemy: “I didn’t expect you to still be alive. You must be almost a hundred years old. How did you manage to escape the postwar trial?”
“It’s a pleasure to see you again, Captain. I never expected to see an old friend like you.” Baron Strucker smiled and had the Hydra soldiers stand in front of him. At that moment, a Hydra soldier knelt down voluntarily, and Baron Strucker placed his prosthetic arm on the man’s head. Within seconds, the man turned into a dried-up corpse.
Strucker, on the other hand, became a middle-aged man in his prime.
“To welcome you, Captain, I’ve specially chosen a fine Hydra warrior to sacrifice his life for our reunion.” Strucker smiled with satisfaction. “Come, Captain, let me use the destruction of the Avengers to bring Hydra a new life!”
"Your plan will be useless. I witnessed Red Skull's destruction back then, and you will too." Captain America shouted, "Avengers! Assemble!"
“Actually, we’re all here, and one of the Wolverines isn’t exactly an Avenger.” Tony couldn’t help but complain. “We need to find the control center here first, guys. We need to make sure Hydra hasn’t set up any self-destruct mechanisms. If this place explodes, then the whole of Budapest will be like it’s been hit by a magnitude 7 earthquake, or worse, the ground will sink 700 meters in an instant.”
[Self-destruct sequence countdown: 10 minutes.]
A loud electronic notification caused a moment of silence among the crowd, followed by the captain's shout of "Avengers, attack!" The two sides instantly went into battle. Tony, along with Pym and the Ultron robots that followed, immediately broke through the encirclement of the battlefield. They needed to stop the self-destruct program from taking effect.
"And we must wait for reinforcements!"
The captain hurled his shield at Baron Strucker, who then threw out a Hydra soldier to intercept it before running away. Peter, hearing this, asked in surprise, "Reinforcements? Who are you looking for, Captain?"
“It’s not anyone, it’s an army, and you’ve been fighting alongside them these past few days.”
"The Wild Chapter will arrive on the battlefield."
