Chapter 281 Lunch Time
Chapter 281 Lunch Time
Peter encountered a puzzle that had been bothering him since buying ice cream: Kenosha didn't seem to have the concept of "transactions," at least not when they bought ice cream or food.
Wanda's answer to this question was quite unexpected.
“Kinosha doesn’t need these things… It’s not that there are no transactions in Kenosha; in fact, monetary transactions still exist. But in terms of basic necessities like food, healthcare, and education, Kenosha doesn’t require its citizens to pay any money.”
Wanda said something that defied common sense: "Although a significant portion of mutants' abilities actually only add obstacles to their lives, overall, the abilities mutants acquire still greatly enhance themselves. The wealth a single mutant can create may be several times, or even dozens of times, that of an ordinary human, and that wealth provides the entire country with far more tax revenue than it needs. This gives us enough confidence to provide completely free access to various basic public services."
This didn't dispel Peter's confusion. Logically, he believed that 1600 million mutants could create enough productivity to provide for all basic needs for free. However, he didn't quite believe that a nation that had only been established for six years could implement all of this without any obstacles, even with Magneto's iron-fisted rule. It seemed unrealistic. Of course, he didn't really understand all of this; he just had a strange, instinctive feeling about it.
But that's not all that's strange.
Children, especially those under six years old, are particularly few.
Why do I almost never see children playing outside?
Peter's question left Wanda, who was waiting for her meal, somewhat bewildered. She looked outside, puzzled, and realized the problem was indeed true. After thinking for a while, she seemed to remember something: "The reason Kenosha's birth rate is low might be because Kenosha requires parents who want to have children to undergo genetic testing. After all, as you just saw, some people's mutant genes have no special effects at all, while others are completely negative, even harmful to their health."
"So, if those genes are deemed...unsuitable for inheritance, then they are not allowed to reproduce, right?"
“Yes, my father believed that these mutant genes are just like the genetic diseases that humans have. If parents are born with genes that may cause their children to have intellectual disabilities or various diseases, then the children should not be born into the world and live with pain. That is inhumane.”
Peter understood, and he didn't pursue the question further: who decides which mutant abilities are genetically viable and which are completely ineffective? It was entirely Magneto's decision, and it was clear he hadn't explained much to his daughter.
Wanda Maximoff was indeed a girl who deeply loved and understood Kenosha, and she believed her father was working for the future of mutants. Of course, Magneto himself probably felt the same way, but their understandings differed.
If Magneto wanted, he could create a mutant race that leaned towards war or other aspects. With about 80% of the world's mutants gathered here, Magneto was fully capable of guiding the mutants to produce the next generation.
Or perhaps Peter is simply overthinking things, and Magneto has actually changed for the better? Peter isn't sure if this possibility really exists, but given Magneto's personality, the chances are slim.
“I feel like…you’re thinking about my father, wondering if he was a bad person.”
Peter was brought back to reality by Wanda's words, but shook his head: "I think it has nothing to do with good or bad, but rather... perhaps your father's and your thinking about 'benefiting mutants' are different, or perhaps I'm overthinking it."
“That’s normal, but he’ll get old someday. He’s said the future is in our hands, the younger generation. When that time comes, we can push things in the right direction.” “Yes, in the right direction… wait, I remember your father is over seventy, isn’t he already considered old?”
"It's...it's really hard to say. He was almost 60 when we were born. He remarried after founding Genoa. When he was 70, he gave birth to a sister for my brother and me named Lorna, who has very rare long green hair."
Lorna... the North Star.
It's true that Old Wan is still vigorous at his age; he can still have children at 70.
As Peter grumbled to himself, the waiter brought out their lunch. Surprisingly, the waiter was a man of similar age with short silver hair and who moved very quickly.
"Both of you have your steaks, medium-rare. I'm sorry, my sister doesn't like steaks that are too rare."
Pietro Maximov burst out, grinning mischievously, and placed two medium-rare steaks on the table—and it really was just steaks, but in an instant, sauce appeared on them, they were brushed with honey, garnished with a few washed four-leaf clovers and cherry tomatoes, and then he handed over two bottles of soda.
Incidentally, although it looks like a gust of wind, Peter can actually see every move Quicksilver makes. His speed does not reach the speed of sound. Perhaps he simply doesn't need to, or perhaps... he can't be that fast yet?
Even faster than Quicksilver was Wanda's helpless and somewhat embarrassed sigh.
"Pepper salt, white pepper salt, fennel... Would you like a salad? Never mind, let's finish the steak first."
“Sorry, Peter, I need to talk to my brother.”
With a helpless sigh, Wanda raised her hand and used crimson energy to catch Pietro, who was running around aimlessly. Pietro looked completely innocent and said, "Hey, I've already cleaned the garden, Wanda."
"That's not what I wanted to talk to you about, dear brother. Let's talk outside."
Peter simply smiled and nodded, watching Wanda drag Pietro away. Then, relying on his superhuman hearing, he heard Wanda grit her teeth and shout her brother's name, accompanied by a pitiful cry similar to that of Tom the cat when he's being beaten. A few minutes later, Wanda tossed her hair, walked back with a helpless expression, and sat down apologetically.
"I'm sorry, that's just my brother's personality..."
“No, it’s nothing. I know a few classmates who might be even more mischievous than him,” Peter said with a smile, reassuring Wanda. “Besides, this steak does look pretty good. Let’s get started.”
