Chapter 232 Dr. Connors
Chapter 232 Dr. Connors
“Good morning, Kurt. I brought a friend along. Is that alright?” Dr. Jonathan Drew led Peter, who only had a visitor's card, on a tour of the Super Soldier Program Center at Osborn Technologies headquarters. Unlike other U.S. military super soldier programs, the “Savage Force” program was very high-profile and very aboveboard.
After all, this was essentially just a project Osborne used to scam the Pentagon out of investment.
"That depends on the person, Jonathan."
Dr. Connors was clearly quite pleased with the "guest" Jonathan had brought: "You must be Peter Parker, you look a lot like Professor Richard. I've heard about you, and frankly, I also think you're the best person to inherit the professor's research achievements."
He was probably referring to the mutated spider that Richard Parker had researched, but Peter didn't intentionally let himself be bitten; it was completely accidental. He even thought Gwen would be the one bitten.
“Hello, Dr. Connors.” Peter shook hands with Connors, who only had one left hand. He was a little curious; the prosthetic technology in Universe 616 wasn't exactly rudimentary, and even disregarding those groundbreaking technologies, there was no need for Connors to have an empty sleeve.
"This is to remind me that I am disabled, so that I have the motivation to complete my research." Connors noticed Peter's confusion and then led the two into the laboratory. The place had changed drastically since Peter's last visit. There were almost no arthropods left, but instead a large number of higher animals.
Peter saw a huge tank containing a large group of electric eels. These eels were constantly releasing lightning, which was then absorbed and stored by a device inside the aquarium.
“This is a Volta electric eel after genetic programming. Its voltage can reach over three thousand, which is four times its original peak value.” Seeing that Peter had noticed the electric eel, Connorson explained, “My work is still in the stage of genetically programming animals to change their original abilities.”
"So, human trials can't be conducted yet?"
"Theoretical research alone has not made as much progress as Jonathan's spiders in human trials. If we were to conduct human trials now, I can almost guarantee that the subjects would die immediately."
Connors delivered some good news: the electric eel in the box, which was likely to create "Electric Man," did not have the ability to be bio-modified. Peter then visited some facilities, and it was clear that Connors preferred reptiles and fish to Richard Parker and Jonathan, who liked to study spiders.
"Come on, let me show you something good."
Connors laughed and led Peter and Jonathan to a temperature-controlled incubator, looking at the lizards crawling inside: "Lizards, geckos and similar reptiles, have the ability to regenerate their tails. I extracted their genes and modified them, look."
As he spoke, he activated the laser cutting device. The laser cut off most of the lizard's body and charred the cut. Peter and Jonathan could see that the lizard was on the verge of death, but in just a few seconds, new flesh regenerated, pushing away the charred surface, and it began to regenerate.
"I spread its regenerative ability throughout its entire body! This is a huge scientific advancement! Imagine if we could transfer the genes of this lizard into humans, then human disability would no longer be a problem."
“This is a project I’ve poured my heart and soul into, and it’s also the project I’ve made the most progress on.” In fact, as far as Peter knew, the US military had similar research, but instead of starting with animals, they were directly studying the genes of mutants with healing abilities like Wolverine. However, he didn’t intend to tell Connors that, and instead asked another question: “So, hasn’t this project started any further experiments?”
Connors' expression suddenly became interesting. Then, he led Jonathan and Peter to another laboratory, where Peter saw the lizard man, or rather, the lizard monkey.
A small, bipedal lizard, or rather a monkey with lizard skin, with all its fur gone, was bursting with an astonishing aggression, ready to attack anyone it saw. Fortunately, there was tempered glass for protection. Peter finally understood Connors' progress—he would no longer let the genetically modified lizards kill the test subjects directly, but he would still turn them into lizard monsters.
"If their strength can be greatly increased, coupled with their regenerative abilities, the U.S. military might order a batch of your lizards."
Jonathan said it half-jokingly, but Connors couldn't help but sigh upon hearing it: "Maybe, but I don't have much hope. As things stand, the lizard monkeys' intelligence has significantly degenerated, while their brain activity has increased. Even if the US military gets their hands on this thing, they can't create super soldiers; they can only create a large group of berserk lizardmen—somewhat like DC's Alligator Man, but without brains."
It turns out that a large majority of scientists are shut-ins and read comics.
"Can it turn back?"
Watching the monkey sticking to the glass and hitting itself, Peter asked the question that concerned him most. Connors didn't immediately understand Peter's question and asked back, "What?"
"I'm asking if there's any way to reverse this genetic modification and turn it into a monkey."
Both scientists, when asked this question, fell into deep thought. After careful consideration, Connors first recounted the current effects of the lizard serum: "In the current process, the serum introduces entirely new genetic material into the DNA and accelerates cell division, thereby rapidly completing the transformation of cells throughout the body..."
"And if we could bring the new genes back, or rather, bring the altered genes back."
“Then it can be done.” Connors suddenly had an inspiration and answered Jonathan’s question: “Yes, theoretically, as long as there is a blood sample of the subject before the serum was injected, it can be restored. And there’s no need to worry about rejection. It’s a brilliant idea, Peter. If we can combine this principle with the effects of the super soldier serum, then we can actually create a special drug to fight diseases by replacing the existing disease sequence with the DNA sequence of a healthy patient.”
"And if the U.S. military needs to turn them back into monsters, there is a way."
Norman Osborn walked into the lab with a smile, extending his hand to Peter with a beaming smile: "Welcome to Osborn Technologies, Peter."
Marvel pulled another stupid stunt, having Spider-Gwen from Earth-65 alter reality and enter the main universe of Earth-616 (she only entered Earth-616, she didn't replace the original Gwen).
