Chapter 197 Grendel
Chapter 197 Grendel
In the Arctic glaciers, green giants and yellow stone figures are smashing into the glaciers. Faced with this behavior that is sure to provoke protests from environmental organizations, Nick Fury calmly sips his coffee and watches the footage taken by drones in the command room of the airship.
The Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts—almost all the most powerful heroes on Earth have gathered here, just in case.
With each punch from the two strongmen, chunks of the glacier at the signal's origin crumbled into the ocean, exposing a colossal creature sealed within—a massive, jet-black being curled up in the permafrost. Its symbiotic body, also frozen solid, remained motionless, yet exuded a vibrant, dynamic life force.
“If this thing were stretched out, it would be over thirty meters long and have a wingspan of about fifty meters. The good news is that we’ve seen even bigger things before; the Chitauri’s Leviathan aircraft carrier is even bigger than this.” Tony Stark said as he and the Human Torch flew to the sides and began firing energy beams to slice off the entire massive black dragon from the glacier, finally handing it over to the Thing to carry—the Hulk didn’t like doing this kind of non-destructive work.
"So, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. plan to do with this thing?"
“We will keep him on this airship, hovering outside New York. The entire airship will be docked near New York, just in case.”
The captain thought the plan was incredibly stupid—who would put a nuclear bomb that could explode at any moment on their own doorstep?
"If this thing has been sealed inside the glacier for hundreds of years, why don't we just keep it sealed here?"
"If our enemies came here to awaken this thing, then they undoubtedly have a way to do so. Since they have a way to awaken it anyway, we must do our best to control the situation."
Nick Fury casually stated his own, or rather S.H.I.E.L.D.'s, thoughts: all dangerous items should be under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s supervision. S.H.I.E.L.D. must control all unstable factors. Even if S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't actually have the ability to control these things, having S.H.I.E.L.D.'s monitoring can still bring people a sense of security.
Faced with a terrifying alien enemy, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s task is not to protect the people, but to make them believe they are protected, since the aliens know that Earthlings are actually unprotected.
"You want to end the war before it even starts?" the captain asked, then said helplessly, "How do you know that's not what the enemy wants? Like Loki, the enemy just wants you to bring this thing to New York."
“We don’t have the means to deal with the Asgardians; they are as powerful as the Kryptonians. But we do have the means to deal with the symbiotes. High temperatures and sound waves are powerful weapons against these alien slimes. If necessary, this aircraft carrier can self-destruct.”
However, it's best not to, since S.H.I.E.L.D. aims to permanently seal this thing away, not kill it.
"So the next step is for the scientists to figure out a way to permanently seal it without thawing it." Nick Fury said, looking at the scientists behind him: "Alright, gentlemen, let's get to work."

“From a literary and mythological perspective, Grendel refers to the ancient giant in Norse mythology, appearing in the epic poem Beowulf. This epic also features a fire-breathing dragon, but without a name.” Reed circled the ice block, analyzing it carefully, before returning to the analytical instruments. “If the historical records are true, this creature was trapped inside the ice block for fifteen hundred years, yet it still had a heartbeat; it was still alive. This is simply unbelievable.”
“Considering we already have an old popsicle in our team, I won’t call it a miracle, Reed.” Tony, wearing armor and carrying an ice core, walked in. He impatiently put the ice core into the instrument for analysis: “It’s strange, this ice core shows no unknown components, and this is the ice core next to this thing.”
"It means that although this dragon is still alive, it hasn't engaged in any metabolic activity, no substances have been excreted, and there hasn't been any molecular exchange for 1,500 years." Hank hesitated before concluding, "This means that it can control its own molecular structure to prevent leakage. Theoretically, this creature isn't in a state of cryogenic freezing, and its consciousness can still control the molecular structure inside its body. But how is that possible..."
Although the captain was frozen for seventy years and still alive, he was in a low-temperature, low-metabolic state, which doesn't mean he had stopped metabolizing. However, the creature before them had transcended the existing biological definition of a living being. No one could deny that this monster had actually surpassed their understanding.
Very strange.
Just then, Bruce Banner, bundled up tightly and rubbing his hands together in the cold air, walked into the lab: "Sorry, guys, Hulk was having a little too much fun. Where were you guys talking?"
“We were talking about how Super Popsicle survived,” Tony said, then asked Hank, “What about his brainwave activity?”
"No, considering the special nature of the symbiote, I suspect that the host dragon here is dead, and only the symbiote is still alive. The symbiote's essential survival substance is phenylethylamine. If it were in extremely low temperatures, the symbiote here might have survived until now by consuming the dragon's brain and then entering a state of cryogenic hibernation."
Hank made a fairly reliable analysis, and Reed agreed with the plan, then added: "If that's the case, then the current state is actually the best sealing effect. According to the information provided by Spider-Man, the symbiote cannot parasitize a corpse. We sealed it inside a corpse, and since it has no host, it is powerless."
Everyone agreed with this viewpoint, except for Bruce Banner, who, after reviewing the research findings of several people and listening to their discussion, put on his glasses and asked a question out of curiosity.
"Guys, aren't we researching the creator of symbiotes? What symbiote god?"
"Why are you using the methods for analyzing ordinary symbiotes to analyze that guy?"
