Chapter 193 The New Target of the Riot

Chapter 193 The New Target of the Riot
Liz arrived at the hospital accompanied by Harry. At that time, only Peter and Johnny the Human Torch were outside the hospital, waiting for the family to arrive. Inside the hospital, the S.H.I.E.L.D. bus squad temporarily took over the ward, and Simmons examined Adrian Tooms's body.

How is my dad?

"His vital signs are all normal, he's just extremely tired. The union with that alien life form has drained a lot of his energy," Simmons, disguised as a doctor, explained Adrian's current physical condition. "But apart from that, everything is quite fine, but the patient may have some psychological issues that need to be addressed, so you'll need to keep an eye on him."

"Can we go in and take a look?"

"Of course, no objection."

Liz nodded with a sigh of relief, looking at her father lying in the hospital bed, and entered the ward accompanied by Harry. Simmons came out, wanting to discuss some matters with Peter, so she looked at the Human Torch with feigned regret: "Excuse me, Mr. Storm, we have some work-related topics to discuss, but due to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s confidentiality regulations, so..."

"I understand, sweetheart. If you want to chat after work, I'll be outside."

After watching the Human Torch leave, Simmons lowered his head, gathered his thoughts, and then looked at Peter: "Spider-Man, this may sound a bit presumptuous, but could you provide some... a blood sample?"

Can I ask for the reason?

"Dr. Adrian's body cells, especially his blood cells, have undergone some peculiar changes. The molecular structure of the symbiote has fused with his cells in a strange way. It hasn't changed his cellular structure; it's more like... he's become a cellular component similar to a cell membrane or something. However, this change is gradually fading, so I'm wondering if your cells might..."

Peter immediately understood what Simmons was talking about.

In fact, this is one of the characteristics of symbiotes. Once a symbiote and its host have been bound together for more than 48 hours, a permanent symbiotic relationship is formed. This doesn't mean the symbiote and host are locked together, but rather that the symbiote will bring the host's thoughts into its hive network and store them there, making them part of its hive network. This imprint is called a "codex." At the same time, a portion of the symbiote's residue will remain permanently in the host's body, even if the symbiote detaches or dies.

The former's characteristics allow Venom hosts such as Eddie Brock and Eugene Thompson, who died in the comic book event "The Black Emperor," to be resurrected through the symbiote's hive network. The latter, on the other hand, can give birth to new special symbiotes. For example, Anti-Venom was created by combining Mr. Negative Martin Lee's abilities with the remaining Venom in Eddie Brock's body after he lost Venom.

The strange thing Simmons observed was clearly the process by which Adrian and the Whiplash had gradually begun to form a code due to their long-term symbiosis.

“Of course, no problem.” Peter nodded, then, as if remembering something, quickly added, “However, I have to make a deal with you: my blood must be destroyed after the research is completed; it cannot be left behind. I don’t want to see a bunch of Spider-Man clones in front of me one day.”

Simmons, who thought Spider-Man was making a mountain out of a molehill, nodded. She didn't think S.H.I.E.L.D. would do something like that. But Peter's concern wasn't S.H.I.E.L.D., but rather Hydra, the organization behind S.H.I.E.L.D., especially Agent Ward from your bus team—he's practically a Hydra mole.

Should we take this opportunity to conduct a sting operation and find out that Ward has some problems?

Peter began to think about it seriously.

Meanwhile, Grant Ward was beginning his usual day. As a Hydra agent, there wasn't much for him to worry about. The bus squad's role was to assist the Avengers and clean up their messes. He didn't need to do anything; he just needed to act as a normal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, handing in his reports at the appointed time. Naturally, Coulson and his teammates' intelligence would end up in Hydra's hands. He sat in his car, monitoring the parking lot for any suspicious individuals. Suddenly, a furtive figure in the distance caught his attention. He frowned, drew his sidearm, and cautiously approached the enemy. As he drew closer, the enemy's figure became clearer: an ordinary, muscular Black man carrying a packet of medication.

But Ward didn't let his guard down. He pretended to put away his gun and walked past as if he were just passing by. Sure enough, the burly black man was suspicious and reached out his hand towards Ward.

Ward grabbed the man's wrist, twisted his arm behind his back, pointed the gun at his head, and demanded sharply, "Tell me, who sent you!"

"What? No, no, no, don't kill me!"

"I'm asking who sent you!"

"I want to steal some money to buy drugs! Don't kill me! Don't kill me!"

Ward held the burly black man down and stared at him for several seconds. After confirming that the man wasn't lying, Ward shook his head. Suddenly, he felt something pull his leg. He quickly turned around to look, but the burly black man was still lying there, too afraid to get up.

Ward lifted his trouser leg again to make sure there was nothing there, then returned to the car. A while later, Simmons got out with a briefcase, smiled and gestured to Ward, who then opened the car door for her.

"Looks like you had a good haul?"

"Yeah, I didn't expect Spider-Man to be so easy to talk to. But he asked us to destroy his blood after we finish the testing, so I need to explain the situation to Coulson."

Listening to Simmons and Coulson talking on the phone, Ward nodded. "Alright, let's remove the task of stealing Spider-Man's DNA sample from the report for now."

Back at the Airbus, Coulson took full control of the vial of blood, stipulating that every subsequent experiment must be conducted with the entire team present, and otherwise kept sealed in a safe. Ward, having realized he had no chance, simply went back to sleep.

He had a long-forgotten dream, a dream of the day he was recruited from the juvenile detention center by his mentor, Hydra spy Clairvoyant, who was also Garrett, a Level 8 agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

He wasn't dreaming.

A gray-black symbiote emerged from Ward's body, and a riot took shape in an instant. After reading Ward's memories, it was quite surprised, then chose to remain silent and retreated back into Ward's body.
