Chapter 114 Jessica Jones

On the third floor of an ordinary apartment building in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, New York, a simple sign hung above the door of one of the units that read "Fake Detective Agency." Matt Murdoch arrived at the agency's door and knocked.

A series of chaotic sounds came from inside. Matt imagined the homeowner frantically tidying up, and waited quietly for the door to open. A woman in her twenties opened the door, and she couldn't help but sigh when she saw it was Matt.

"If I had known it was you, I wouldn't have bothered to clean it up."

“I don’t think sweeping all the trash to one side counts as cleaning up, but you look pretty good, Jessica.”

Matt entered the apartment with a smile. The woman's name was Jessica Jones, a superhuman with the ability to fly and super strength, who was also the owner and sole employee of the detective agency.

The two met through a peculiar case. In short, Jessica killed a psychopathic superhuman named Purple Man, who possessed mind control abilities. Matt, as her defense attorney, defended her and secured her innocence, thus bringing the two together.

Matt tapped his guide cane on the ground, listening to the subtle vibrations and Jessica's typing sounds. He walked to the wall and asked Jessica, "Did you change the photo?"

"McDonald Gagan, the infamous Gagan."

Jessica Jones didn't directly answer Matt's question: "Didn't you tell me to find him? I've put some clues about him on the wall."

"Ah, yes, about this..."

Matt scratched his head awkwardly, then gave an embarrassed smile: "You don't need to investigate any further."

Jessica: ? ? ?

"Yesterday, the modified Gagan attempted to kidnap a family member of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but has been arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D."

Matt adjusted his glasses somewhat embarrassedly. The investigation into Gagan had just begun, but just like with Kingpin, everything came to an abrupt halt.

He received confirmation from Spider-Man that Kingpin had indeed hired Gagan and some of the previous supervillains. He had also hired a scientist named Otto Octavia to help him modify Chitauri weapons.

Conservative estimates, based solely on Gaggen's indirect inquiries, suggest that King earned a substantial $20 billion from these weapons, enough for a major business transformation. The actual figure is undoubtedly much higher.

Unfortunately, these cannot be submitted as evidence to the court. This is because memories obtained through telepathic scanning constitute illegally obtained evidence, and illegally obtained evidence cannot be used to indict Kingpin.

Upon hearing this, Jessica Jones stopped typing. She took the computer off her lap and looked at Matt: "If you're just going to tell me that you've solved McDonald's problem, then you can just give me a call."

"Since you made a special trip here, it means... you have something else to do, right?"

Matt sighed, nodded, and sat down on the sofa.

“I met with Fisk today. He seemed very much looking forward to it. Looking forward to the greater chaos that would follow as his influence diminishes in New York.”

Jessica Jones listened quietly as Matt finished speaking, her brow furrowing. She understood what Matt meant. Undoubtedly, as a detective, Jessica was more familiar with the criminal forces in Hell's Kitchen than Matt was, and therefore more likely to perceive exactly where things were going wrong in Hell's Kitchen.

“Hell’s Kitchen has been acting up since yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s because Fisk left, but you can start from that angle.” Matt nodded and thanked him. Kingpin definitely knew something; he’d been suppressing something, or rather, a gang. These people would emerge once Kingpin’s power weakened. And that was exactly what Kingpin wanted.

He kept doing this until Matt himself admitted that Kingpin was indeed protecting the city.

So Matt needs to stop the rising gangs; he needs to prove to Kingpin that New York doesn't need him.

So after thinking about it carefully for a while, he looked at Jessica Jones again.

"Isn't there anything noteworthy happening lately?"

Jessica thought for a moment, then started searching for recent cases on her computer. Attorney Ma listened to the sound of Jessica typing, and soon after, her lazy voice rang out.

"Um, there's a missing person case here. It's quite strange. A girl named Tandy Bowen has suddenly disappeared and her whereabouts are unknown. Her family is quite wealthy, and she rarely runs away from home."

Why do you say it's strange?

After Matt asked her a question, Jessica recounted what she had found—gold jewelry scattered on the ground and nearby surveillance footage.

"According to the surveillance footage, the girl did not leave the building... Sorry you can't see it, but she vanished into thin air. And the jewelry was not taken."

Jessica concluded: "This is a kidnapping, without a doubt. Someone kidnapped Tandy Bowen for some specific purpose, and no purpose for the kidnapping can be found."

Just as Matt was about to continue his discussion with Jessica, his other phone rang. He recognized the ringtone; it was his good friend Foggy calling. Matt apologized to Jessica and then answered Foggy's call.

"Oh...really? Okay, I know, let's discuss it tonight."

With a hint of curiosity, Jessica asked Matt, "What's wrong? Why do you look so serious?"

“There was a case where the client contacted our firm to discuss whether we could take on his case.”

Matt smiled helplessly: "The client is a fugitive who escaped from Clayton Island. But he has been claiming his innocence, including now at the law firm."

Jessica Jones nodded, still unaware of the seriousness of the problem.

“He has superpowers, he’s invulnerable to bullets and has superhuman strength.” Matt’s words piqued Jessica’s curiosity, but Matt’s next words made Jessica realize that this man was very troublesome.

He said his abilities were not acquired by chance, but through human experimentation. The U.S. military conducted human experiments inside prisons to create super-soldier serums.

Matt sighed, then looked at Jessica. This time, he really needed Jessica's help.

"I need you to help me investigate this man named Luke Cage. We must find out who he is."
