Chapter 360 Knowledge and Snoring
Ruger and Mahama turned to look at him.
"Of course, I still have great respect for that person. When I was struggling to make people laugh, I tried many things and eventually found the slowest but fastest way, a way that was not very effective but ultimately the most effective: spreading knowledge."
The ordinary-looking young man calmly accepted the scrutiny of Luger and his companion, and slowly began to speak.
"Knowledge can bring them happiness, make their lives easier, allow them to catch more fish, and prevent their children from going hungry... It can make their bread taste better. Oh, I'm sorry, I'm just stating the facts, not trying to mock that adult. In short, it's things that can make them genuinely smile, even if life is busy, even if some people are still eaten by fish, things are always slowly getting better. Like now, they are celebrating their harvest. No guidance is needed, no complicated spells are required... They will offer up their laughter, and of course, a great deal of faith..."
The young man, whose appearance was so ordinary that he would be easily forgotten in a crowd, stood still and spoke slowly. His steady pace of speech made people feel at ease, and at the same time, as if afraid of being misunderstood, he did not make any strange moves.
"Are you that person's student?"
Mahama spoke up.
The man withdrew his gaze from Ruger and looked at Mahama, who was so large he could fit two or three of him inside.
“Of course not, not enough. I’m not qualified yet. That was just a play arranged by the messenger of the god of drama,” the man said with a smile. “I’ve never even met that sir. The so-called guidance was just me being inspired by him, without his knowledge… You two must have just arrived here…”
Although the young man in front of him did not say it explicitly, Ruger understood that he was not referring to the small island, or even the sea area.
"I am just like you. I only know the name of that deity, but I do have some basic knowledge. For example, I think that behind the deity, that person is at least a fifth-circle wizard, or even a sixth-circle wizard. Of course, this is just my knowledge as a wizarding apprentice, the master of a small island, and a practitioner of an insignificant faith."
The young man had a smile on his face, and his ordinary appearance only increased his approachability.
Ruger realized that this person had judged them to be outsiders based on their ignorance.
At the same time, Ruger marveled at how this person had successfully reversed his previous bad impression of him with just a few words.
"Knowledge does not necessarily bring happiness."
Suddenly, Mahama spoke up, silencing Ruge who was about to speak.
"Of course, especially for wizards."
The young man responded with a smile, showing no displeasure at Mahama's rebuttal.
After he finished speaking, he made a gesture of invitation, and the three of them began to stroll down the street.
Laughing and playing children would occasionally run past them.
"I once heard that a wizard was tormented for hundreds of years because of a piece of knowledge and a tattered scroll, to the point that his personality changed drastically... Knowledge can bring power, and power can bring disaster. For example, the nearest island was inhabited fifteen years ago, but even so, it cannot be denied that knowledge can bring happiness."
The young man walked and talked, helping up a child who had fallen, and then looked back at Ruge and Mahama.
"This is the edge of the Chaotic Star Sea, a place rarely visited by anyone, especially wizards. So I hope you two are travelers with good intentions," the young man patted the child's head, letting him run off, before continuing on his slow walk. "Here, there's nothing of value except laughter. I chose this remote place to practice my beliefs without being swayed by external influences. I am merely a god of sorrow, leaving joy for the world—of course, that's just how I present myself to outsiders, haha… I'm just a wizard's apprentice…"
“But what I said before is true. There’s nothing of value here, just a wizard apprentice pretending to be the God of Grief. Of course, I’ve also trained some God-given individuals, that is, extraordinary individuals, the fighters I chose,” the man said, winking as if joking with his two old friends, “a rather rare type of Pain Warrior. Every punch they throw can amplify the pain several times over. These guys usually help me maintain things on the island, carrying out my so-called divine punishment on my behalf…”
The man shrugged as he spoke. "Anyway, I think it's reasonable. As the god of sorrow, who bears the grief for his believers at all times, it's not too much to bestow some pain upon those who have made mistakes..." As he spoke, the man took the wine glass handed to him by someone next to him and drank a third of it in one gulp.
Ruge noticed that as they walked from the small square, Mahama was no longer as resistant to this easygoing man.
Ruge had already reversed his bad impression of him after hearing his explanation, but Mahama seemed to have some different opinions because of the saying that knowledge can bring happiness.
"Well then, I hope you two won't disappoint me."
The man held a wine glass, looking at Ruger and Mahama.
The three faces were illuminated by the distant campfire, their shadows shifting between light and shadow.
Ruger hesitated and did not move.
"of course."
Mahama spoke softly, raising a finger to his side.
The pattern, devoid of glaring light, exudes a sense of solemnity and composure, with a broken, curved corner in the center.
Ruger looked at this so-called god of sorrow.
On his ordinary face, his slightly round eyes lit up for a moment.
"Please forgive my rudeness," the man said, seemingly delighted. "Don't be surprised. In most places, it's the people from the Overseer's Office who are unwelcome. They'll ask all sorts of questions as soon as they show up. But for you demon hunters, you are very welcome on most islands. Demons elsewhere represent disaster, represent many things, but here, in the Endless Sea, they mostly represent shameful thieves of faith, stealers of the power of faith."
Ruger controlled his facial expressions.
This guy didn't know the witcher was here, and although they had only just met and hadn't had much contact, after what happened on the cliff, Ruge felt that this seemingly unreliable man had his own methods and arrangements for doing things, and what they were doing now seemed to be disrupting those methods.
However, this was just his speculation. Perhaps that person was simply here to stay for a few days, enjoy the celebration, and have some fine wine.
After talking for a while, Mahama declined the other party's invitation.
After wandering around for most of the night, the two finally set off on their way back to their lodgings.
During the final casual conversation, the God of Sorrow was able to settle down here. Although he had never met that great man, he could be considered a follower of the god of knowledge. Or rather, many people in this chaotic star sea were not core members and were not qualified to be anything. They were just on the periphery and were relatively neutral, but they still had to have a tendency as a title.
On the way back, Ruger glanced at the tall figure beside him and thought that this guy might not be reckless. What he could think of, this guy could naturally think of as well.
Suddenly, a figure lying by the roadside caught their attention.
The man was lying on his side by the roadside, not far from their residence, reeking of alcohol, and still snoring softly.
The two were speechless once again.
