Chapter 323 Ears and Big Chapter
Chapter 323 Ears and Lies
The table next door was clearly the focus of attention in that corner of the tavern.
It was only because one of them had a long ear—yes, only one, while the other ear was normal—that he looked particularly comical. But Ruger noticed that the people around him probably didn't think so. They were drinking and secretly observing him, and when they looked over, they all had solemn expressions, which could even be described as awe.
Ruger laughed; this was probably what people meant by receiving divine blessings.
But if this guy can come here to drink, he must not be doing very well.
He became the center of attention in the dimly lit tavern not only because of his peculiar appearance, but also because of the words he spoke.
Ruger raised an eyebrow, realizing that his plan to drink his way through each tavern might be in jeopardy.
"I just came out of the inner city today. Lord Waglen in the inner city is recruiting God-given individuals, hmph..."
The long-eared man spoke with a rather smug expression.
"Do you know why this gentleman is summoning the God-given? You should know that although Lord Waglen's rank is not high, his wealth is astonishing, hehe..." The long-eared man stopped after saying a few words, either picking up his glass to drink or chuckling softly, which piqued the interest of everyone at the table.
The two people at the table watched him intently, seemingly convinced by his words. After his glass was empty, they even pushed their own glasses towards him.
"As far as I know, the youngest son of that old man Waglen has contracted a strange illness... and the gathering of divinely gifted individuals to pray for help is for the purpose of curing the illness. I suspect they have already prepared a large amount of..."
As the long-eared man was speaking, the wine glass he had just gotten his hands on was snatched back.
"Waglen's youngest son has been ill for at least half a year, don't try to trick me into giving him wine..."
The friend's words seemed to sting that person, and even their long ears stopped standing straight.
Luger, however, listened with great interest.
"Sir, your wine and bread, and another piece of bread will be waiting a while."
The chubby girl put her things down and was about to leave.
“Four star coins in total…” she said hurriedly.
Ruger took out some money and placed it on the table. The girl took it, turned around, and disappeared immediately.
He pursed his lips and continued listening.
“Don’t just look at the surface. I know more details, all the latest news,” the long-eared man hurriedly released the message again. “It is said that they unintentionally blasphemed a god, which is why their home became like that. So I guess that most of the divinely inspired people who responded to the call are reckless guys from the outer islands, because they do not believe in our gods here, nor do they know what trouble Sir Waglen has gotten into.”
"Do you know...?"
The two friends at the table seemed to have changed their attitude towards the long-eared man, and no longer trusted him as they had initially.
It's as if only after being tricked can they recall their friends.
Ruger took a bite of the bread; the sweet and sour taste wasn't what he had imagined, but the overall flavor was still quite good. He put the whole bread into his mouth, then picked up his wine glass and began to savor it.
“Are you going to help Master Waglen? I think that will be a turning point in your life,” another friend joked. “You’ll definitely make a name for yourself.”
The long-eared man was taken aback, not expecting his friend to ask such a pointed question.
"Of course I want to go, but my piety is holding me back..."
The long-eared man wanted to continue talking, but was quickly interrupted by his friend.
"You wouldn't really be of any use, would you? Besides, I've always suspected that your ear was bitten by some kind of subterranean beast or insect. It's hard to imagine that a lousy guy like you would receive a blessing from a god, especially one we've never heard of." The two men at the table quickly rendered the long-eared man speechless with their words.
“I told you this, I told you this years ago. Maybe I’m just too devout,” the long-eared man said helplessly. “I just took a nap at home. In my dream, I saw that god and received a blessing. When I woke up, my ears turned out like this.”
These conversations made Ruger want to laugh.
Here, it seems that other non-wizard superhumans are all given the title of wizard's attendants and messengers.
In this place specifically designated for religious wizards, it seems that any potion on the shelves of Old Lenser's apothecary could be used to try and become a god on some smaller island.
"But you don't recognize it."
One of the people at the table said.
"Yes, but that doesn't diminish my piety. If it weren't for my piety, I wouldn't be the way I am now. You're just jealous, extremely jealous. You should know that although I haven't changed in strength, as a God-given person, I'm still valued by the nobles and can freely enter and leave the inner city."
This time, the long-eared man's words were not refuted by his two friends.
Ruger sipped his sour liquor, observing everything. This liquor tasted completely different from the other sour liquors he had tasted before; it even had a slightly viscous texture.
Since this assessment has been set up, we should still follow the other party's requirements.
It's best not to risk using the Abyss Bedroom space.
Looking at the people at the next table, Ruger thought that the test might not be that difficult, or that he was just lucky this time.
We could try to contact Sir Wagler and see if there are any further leads.
Ruger had a feeling that this might be a breakthrough.
With the drinks not being satisfactory and the meat patties taking forever to arrive, Ruger felt there was no need for him to stay any longer.
He stood up, drank the pine worm wine in his glass in one gulp, put down the glass, and walked outside.
He has already chosen to give up that meat pie.
Suddenly, a sneer rang out, causing him to pause slightly.
“You should be glad you’re in this small place, otherwise your long ears would definitely be the subject of nursery rhymes,” someone nearby said. “Your ears are probably being punished by some god for always lying. Just this morning, Sir Waglen and his family were killed by some mysterious monster. You didn’t just come from the inner city; I suspect you haven’t been there in ages…”
This man's words not only embarrassed the long-eared man.
This also made Luger stop in his tracks.
The long-eared man looked flustered, his attempts to argue failing to form coherent sentences. At first, someone in the tavern chuckled, but then the atmosphere became strange.
"Another person has died..."
Someone sighed softly.
Throughout the dimly lit tavern, whispers began to circulate, a mix of true and false rumors flowing through the darkness. The only thing that was truly real was the undisguised worry in everyone's words.
"Sir, your meat pie."
The busy, chubby girl paused for a moment when she saw Luger standing there, but still placed the small plate of meat pies on the table.
