Chapter 119 Acquisition and Loss
The coffin, inspected by the knights, appeared even more loose, just like the loose soil and crooked mound before them—that was old Tom's final resting place.
The farewell ceremony for Old Tom was simple. They stood silently for a while in front of the small pit that had just been covered, and no one knows who took the first step, but the rest followed. Sadness spread among the returning crowd, but it wasn't overwhelming; it seemed that people had become accustomed to it.
The one-armed Trevanko and his loud-voiced knight neighbor would occasionally glance in Ruger's direction. They had seen the badge nearby, recognized it, and understood its significance better than the other neighbors.
The scrutinizing gazes are increasing, but Ruger doesn't seem to care.
The little guy was probably the saddest one in the crowd. He was sitting on his father's shoulders, holding his father's head. Perhaps he was tired from crying all the way, because his tear-streaked face looked sleepy.
The group made their way back to the old neighborhood without any obstacles.
The underground world does not exist because of a city, just as the underground city will not cease to function because of sadness on a street corner.
A large number of knights began to blockade the city, and by evening they had begun to search the entire city.
It is said that the inner city was not spared either, and even the castles and manors of nobles were conducting self-inspections.
Ruger looked at the knights who had come to his door. It was the same group he had encountered that morning, and the one leading them was still the same middle-aged knight.
Is something really lost?
Obviously not. Just to put it simply, unless that kind of thing can't be put into a storage bag, the spellcasters wandering around the city and the nobles in their homes all have a lot of storage bags, so there's no way to find out.
Sure enough, the Knights changed their previous excuse.
"Sir, we need to check if there are any suspicious people," the middle-aged knight said in a deep voice.
Luger smiled and stepped aside, gesturing for him to proceed.
Daisy and two tall kobolds were busily preparing dinner in the kitchen. With Ruger handling things, they felt very at ease and paid no attention to the knight who entered the house.
Every room and corner was thoroughly searched, with the basement being explored particularly meticulously.
It was at this moment that Ruger learned that the witch apprentice next door was no longer there, and the house was completely empty, without even a single bottle or jar, indicating that she had not been gone for a short time.
The inexplicable search lasted for three days, sometimes continuing day and night, sometimes abruptly ending.
Three days is simply not enough time to thoroughly search the entire city.
There were far fewer people on the street.
It was dusk again.
A beast-drawn carriage without any special markings slowly came to a stop in front of Luger's house.
Luger, who was swinging his legs on a recliner, immediately recognized it as the beast-drawn carriage from the Lorigo Manor, which was specially prepared for discreet travel.
A hooded figure hurried into the house.
Ruger instantly had a bad feeling, as if his unlimited ferry ticket was waving goodbye to him.
"grown ups."
The red-haired woman took off her hat.
“Long time no see, Myrtle,” Ruger said with a smile.
Suddenly, Maute knelt down on one knee, took out a box, and handed it to Ruger.
“Lord Ruger, this is what Master Lorigo asked me to bring to you,” she said in a low voice. Ruger took the box, but the red-haired woman did not stand up after the box left her hand.
He gave her a strange look, then slowly opened the box in his hand.
He saw a flat stone lying on the velvet ball. He picked it up and looked at it curiously. He then tried to connect with it using his mental power. His mental power could sense that it was pointing in a direction, connecting to a place in the distance.
"Mother, don't test my patience."
He examined the stone in his hand with great interest.
“Young Master Lorigo doesn’t want me to bother you, but I still want to ask for your help…” she finally spoke, handing over a somewhat old storage pouch. The spiritual traces of the Gem Summoner on it had been erased by her, turning it into an unclaimed pouch.
These unorthodox spellcasters' tricks are far less reliable than the marks of a wizard.
"Oh? Does that guy want to run away from his wedding?" Ruger said with a smile, looking at the storage bag, without rushing to take it.
“Young Master sensed that something might happen to him, so he gave this box to me in advance and instructed me to deliver it to you personally,” she said in a deep voice. “He didn’t want me to tell you about his situation. He said you were just a passerby and that you had more important things to do. Star City was too small, and what happened there was just a boring farce for you. He said you would definitely become a great wizard in the future, and it would be his honor to be able to help you when you are inconvenienced.”
“Therefore, this is my own presumptuous request. These are the magic stones I have accumulated over the years. Please accept them and give Young Master Lorigo some help,” she said sincerely. “If you feel unhappy or find things difficult, you are free to leave.”
The house was quiet, and neither of them spoke for a while, except for the various subtle sounds coming from the kitchen.
The two kobolds' skills weren't great, but they had improved considerably; at least they no longer made Daisy flustered.
“Where is Lorigo?” he asked.
“He’s missing. He’s been missing for days,” she said.
"Could this guy really have run away from his wedding?" Ruger said uncertainly.
Myrtle shook her head.
“He wouldn’t do that for the sake of the family’s reputation…” she whispered.
Ruger sat up from the recliner and said seriously, "So what do you want me to do? Or rather, how do you want me to help him?"
The red-haired woman hesitated for a moment, then said, "I've heard that wizards like to secretly leave their own unique mark on things. That mark can help the wizard find the location of the target. I wonder if you have any..."
She spoke in a low voice, glancing tentatively at Ruger.
Ruger laughed. When he left the manor, he did take the opportunity of saying goodbye to leave a secret mark on Lorigo, but it was not as magical as Myrtle had expected. It could only be sensed when you got close.
“What else did Lorigo say?” he asked.
The red-haired woman hesitated slightly, but still spoke slowly.
“The young master has been very troubled lately. He says that his elder brother and the Baron give him a strange feeling. They are making some decisions that seem incomprehensible to him, as if they are no longer the wise and rational rulers of the underground region as they usually are…” she said.
He nodded, pondered for a moment, and said, "Did they find any clues when the search in the city suddenly ended?"
Upon hearing this, Mortel shook her head.
“All I know is that the wedding schedule remains unchanged. I suspect the Fanxing family might have the third young master replace him,” she said.
The long-awaited dinner was also ready at that moment.
Ruger thought for a moment, then reached out and took the old storage bag that she had been holding for a long time.
