Chapter 263 The Discussion
Chapter 263 The Discussion
However, Mark's face was hidden behind a mask and sunglasses, making it impossible for Jeff to see anything.
"Aren't they afraid...?" Erica had heard a little about Mark's sister's situation. She originally wanted to ask, "Aren't they afraid of being burned at the stake?" But thinking of Captain Mark here, she could only swallow the rest of her sentence.
"Captain, what should we do?" Mo Cheng asked his commander, since this incident happened within their Hunters organization.
If things aren't handled properly and those guys from the Light and Shadow Society find something to hold against Captain Mark, it could really have a huge negative impact on him.
Furthermore, the old city lord has already stated that Mark is his successor as city lord. We can't afford any problems at this crucial juncture!
"You'd better pretend you don't know anything about this. I'll personally go and advise them!" Mark's voice came from above them, drawing their attention upwards.
Jeff, being older and more experienced in dealing with people, hesitated for a moment before speaking, "Mark, if things really can't be done, you should step up and set an example. You really can't afford anything to happen to you at this crucial moment! Once you're in a position of power, everything will be fine!"
Mo Cheng nodded in strong agreement. "Yes, Captain! We must be careful in everything we do right now. Besides, Instructor Elon and the others are about to embark on a long journey. The only person left who can keep track of our Hunters' logistics for the long term is Jessica. Even in this Lighthouse, there are still many upper-class citizens who don't really respect her because of her lack of seniority!"
Listening to the two people below offering their earnest advice, Mark felt a mix of emotions. He thought of his sister and looked at the two people embracing under the tree in the distance.
For a moment, he himself was also confused about the matter, and he had no idea how to handle it.
"I learned from the people in the Dawn Hall that Penny is going to the Dawn Hall at 8 pm tonight to carry out a breeding mission!" At this moment, Ran Bing's words were like a thunderclap, causing the others to look at her in shock.
Ran Bing, however, lowered her head in frustration, seemingly lost in thought.
After everyone else realized what was happening, they all showed expressions of pity and sympathy as they looked at the poor couple in the distance!
In the distance, Penny had already let go of Donnie's embrace, and Donnie still had the same expression as Muller, seemingly not having reacted yet.
"Donnie!" Penny nestled in Donnie's arms, feeling the large hands holding her, and couldn't help but show a sense of accomplishment. "I love you!"
She sensed it as soon as he said that, and Donnie, who was holding him, froze.
Donnie's mind was in turmoil; he didn't know what to do. After the recent bliss, the fear of punishment from the Three Laws instantly took over.
“Penny, if the Shadow Society finds us like this…” He stopped halfway through his sentence. Perhaps feeling it was a bit embarrassing for a man to say this, he changed his words, “We’re all hunters of the wilderness, and we haven’t even killed all the Devouring Beasts on the surface yet. The surface isn’t safe…”
Perhaps realizing belatedly how cowardly he had been to utter those words, Donnie could only speak softer and softer until he finally lowered his head and fell silent.
"I'm going to the Dawn Hall at 8 PM to carry out a breeding mission!" The concise yet cold words pierced Donnie's heart like a knife.
Penny wanted to hear what Donnie had to say; even a simple plea to stay would be enough for her to immediately refuse the breeding mission.
She would not hesitate to give her life for it.
But after waiting for a long time without receiving a reply from Donnie, she didn't dare to look up at Donnie's expression.
She silently left Donnie's embrace. For some reason, the evening breeze made her feel a slight chill, and she couldn't help but hug her shoulders.
Seeing that the situation had ended, the people hiding behind the door immediately withdrew their heads and went to a corner to discuss their respective countermeasures.
After all, Captain Mark is about to become the city lord, but this kind of thing has happened in the team.
This undoubtedly adds a bit of risk to Mark's succession as city lord, especially considering that bastard Charles is watching closely from the sidelines.
Everyone knows that Lord Morgan and Charles are father and son. Mrs. Jay, being shrewd and experienced, is most afraid that this incident will cause Morgan to change his mind and pass the position to Charles on the eve of his inauguration.
“This matter must be kept to a minimum. First, make sure Captain Mark sits on the city lord's seat! Then everything will be much easier!” Jeff spoke first, and was already planning to tell Gavin, Quinn and those old guys to keep an eye on Penny and Donnie’s situation.
After all, they were all veterans of the Wilderness Hunters, originally confidants of the former commander, Red Hair.
Now that Mark, as Red Hair's younger brother, has taken over as commander, he's practically one of their own.
Everyone was getting old and knew what kind of person Mark was. So, the older folks and Instructor Elon tried their best to consider things carefully. Now, Instructor Elon was about to embark on a long journey, and as hunters, they didn't often go on missions together.
Therefore, I'm quite worried that Mark might cause trouble at the Lighthouse because of his personality. Especially after the news of his succession as city lord came out, I'm even more worried!
Kun Jie and the other elders refused all the gathering missions that the hunters were not going to do with Mark.
Even if it costs them almost half of their life savings in donation points as a fine, they are willing to pay it!
"But why do I feel a little sad when they act like this?" Erica said quietly, propping her head up with her hand and staring blankly at the ground.
These words caused a rare flash of coldness to appear in Jeff's eyes. Mo Cheng, being a reasonable person, gently tapped Erica on the head and scolded, "You idiot, what time is it now? Don't forget that Captain Mark is about to become the city lord. If this matter really causes a mess, even the smallest offense will be due to Captain Mark's lax governance. If Charles of the Light and Shadow Society uses this as an excuse to make trouble, the final outcome is really hard to say. Don't forget that he and City Lord Morgan are father and son! If he really becomes the city lord, who knows what he will do to us!"
Jeff nodded, looking at Mark who was bowing his head in silence, and said, "Mark! I know what you're thinking. You don't need to worry about this! Leave it to us old guys! What you need to do now is to do everything you can to get that position!"
Mo Cheng also advised, "Yes, Captain Mark. Jeff is right, this matter can be handled by a few of us! If you're really worried, I'll pick a few more good people!" As he said this, he looked at Jeff with a hint of sarcasm, "After all, people get old, and that thing really isn't what it used to be."
These words broke the tense atmosphere, prompting Jeff to angrily shout, "You bastard, if you're not happy, come and fight us in the ring!"
"Fine, I'll go!" Mo Cheng refused to back down, holding up five fingers. "I bet you five days of premium food!"
"Alright!" Mark finally spoke, interrupting the argument between the two and drawing the attention of everyone present.
Even Ran Bing, who had been keeping her head down and silent, raised her head and looked at Mark.
"You don't need to worry about this!"
Mark's words immediately made Jeff anxious. "Mark!"
But Mark raised his hand to interrupt him, saying, "I know what you're trying to say, but let's leave it at that and not make a fuss about it!"
Jeff didn't know what to say, so he just turned his head away. But what he was really thinking was anyone's guess.
“I know what you’re thinking!” Mark had already taken off his sunglasses, hat, and mask. “Actually, I’m not that interested in that so-called city lord! On the contrary, I think the Wilderness Hunter suits me better. What I want to do is go down to the ground and wipe out all those Devouring Beasts. To ensure the continuation of the Lighthouse human race!”
"And there's one more crucial thing!" This last sentence drew everyone's attention again, and the four people, who were preoccupied with their own thoughts, couldn't help but listen attentively.
"Don't forget the surface!" Mark looked intently at the four of them. "It's real; humans can survive there!"
Jeff's eyes widened instantly upon hearing this, staring at Mark in shock. "You mean..."
Mark looked at him and nodded seriously. Jeff, having received an affirmative answer, gasped for breath. He felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
"Alright, everyone, go back and get some rest!" Mark finally stood up, ending the meeting, and turned to leave first.
Erica glanced at Ran Bing again, then scurried away, since to be honest, there was really nothing for her here.
Ran Bing glanced at Jeff and Mo Cheng, then turned and chased after Mark in the direction he had left.
The two stood there, watching this scene, seemingly lost in thought.
“Mo Cheng!” Jeff suddenly spoke up. Mo Cheng looked at him with a puzzled expression. “Regardless of what Captain Mark thinks, we need to prepare for the worst!”
Mo Cheng didn't speak, but nodded heavily. Jeff, on the other hand, looked worried. Now, those old guys, Haji, Kunjie, and Gog, were no longer under the lighthouse but had gone to the ground to carry out a mission.
It's really troublesome to get things done without your own people around!
He also suspected something was amiss, even though Penny wasn't an elite-level hunter. With the next ground mission so close, why would the Dawn Hall suddenly send Penny on a breeding mission?
