Chapter 585 Shadow
Luo Gandao couldn't quite understand these things. Just as he was struggling with this, Zhang Jie's voice rang out again: "Don't worry, if something really goes wrong, the telekinetic power I left on you will help you."

“Us?” Logando was taken aback. “Alexander received the same treatment?”

Zhang Jie was also taken aback: "What's wrong? Do you think he shouldn't enjoy this treatment?"

"Do I look like that kind of person?" Luo Gandao muttered to himself, when he heard Zhang Jie's laughter, which startled him. "I mean, why are you still taking such good care of Alexander?"

After thinking for a long time, Zhang Jie said somewhat uncertainly, "This might be a fine tradition of our Zhongzhou team... We seem to always take good care of the characters in the story, especially those with whom we naturally have interactions."

Luo Gandao, of course, was unaware of the unfortunate souls who hadn't been taken care of. He thought for a moment, then asked in confusion, "Hey, Brother Zhang Jie, why did you give me a comforting moment at just the right time?"

"Uh...don't you know? Since you can talk to me, it means you're connected to my mental energy. So it's not difficult for me to sense your emotional fluctuations." Zhang Jie's tone was relaxed, as if the attack on the sea surface had no effect on him at all.

Luo Gandao's heart stirred, as if he had thought of something, but he immediately suppressed this emotion.

Unexpectedly, Zhang Jie made no attempt to hide it. He laughed and said, "You haven't had any bloodline enhancement yet, and your gene lock has just been opened, so your perception and control are lacking... otherwise, you wouldn't occasionally let your thoughts slip out."

Luo Gandao was taken aback for a moment, and subconsciously asked, "What...what idea?"

"It's that kind of inner monologue... especially when you're feeling emotional. But don't worry, even if you're not very skilled yet, at most I'll just hear it."

Luo Gandao breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, he had only occasionally let those thoughts slip out. He thought for a moment and then asked, "Is this normal?"

Zhang Jie replied, "Of course it's normal. At least in my experience... every newcomer will have some mishaps the first time they contact us using mental power. But we don't care about that. After all, as mental power controllers, it's easy for us to sense emotional fluctuations, let alone control thoughts. In your case, it will be fine after one session, no, even less than one session."

“Okay…” Luo Gandao muttered.

Zhang Jie's laughter rang out once again, but this time, it carried less of amusement and more of a sense of parting. It was tinged with reminiscence, yet also laced with a profound melancholy.

"You care about this, maybe because you're afraid of embarrassing yourself, or maybe you don't trust me yet... But I want to tell you that if we really wanted to harm any newcomer, they wouldn't even realize it."

Zhang Jie's voice disappeared, and all that remained in Luo Gandao's ears were the various sound effects inside the cockpit and the sound of water flowing outside the mecha.

Is that so…? Logandao's hands had begun to tremble slightly; he gripped the control stick tightly, whether wary of something in the dark depths of the sea or lost in thought, it was unclear. After a long while, Logandao sighed, banishing those distracting thoughts.

"What's wrong?" Alexander asked casually when he heard Logandao's sigh. "Feeling unsafe here? Don't worry, this isn't some mecha monster movie. The carbon-based life forms that can withstand our Allied mecha probably haven't evolved yet. Even some of the mutated creatures we discovered before couldn't do that."

Able to withstand mechs... carbon-based lifeforms... haven't evolved? I doubt it... Several faces flashed through Luo Gandao's mind as he thought to himself. But with their freakish physical abilities and powers, are they really still carbon-based lifeforms?
Just then, a piercing alarm blared in the cockpit. Logando even heard an echo on the communication channel; even though the communication between their two mechs was somewhat unstable, he was certain it was the alarm Alexander had received!
"Be on guard! Be on guard!" Luo Gandao roared, his nerves, which had been constantly being tugged, finally erupting with astonishing power. He advanced in one direction according to the system's suggestions while keeping his eyes fixed on the scanned images on the screen.

Then, both Logan and Alexander were stunned.

It wasn't some mutated marine creature they'd imagined, but rather more than ten enormous black shadows... This cursory scan shouldn't have been enough to draw a conclusion. But for them, the answer was too simple... and too unbelievable.

Those were definitely mechs... more than ten mechs that were not emitting any light, but were moving in the deep sea.

A strange sense of dread crept up Luo Gandao's back. He felt a chill spreading through his thick combat suit... Luo Gandao admitted that he wasn't a brave person; on the contrary, he was easily frightened and prone to impulsive actions. But sitting in the mech, he felt like he possessed a body of steel, which made him much braver.

However… when the same steel body presented itself in such a bizarre state, his unwavering will wavered. If it weren't for Alexander being his teammate, his missions with the Allies and the Central Continent Team, and Zhang Jie's assurance, he would have definitely run away immediately.

That's right, if any one condition is missing, he'll just run away... without even looking back.

Alexander's curses and the sound of gunfire rang out simultaneously: "Damn it, those bastards from the United States are playing tricks?" The most reckless ammunition burst from the various guns of his machine. With powerful propulsion and ballistic calculation systems, these shells hit the nearest ring of mechs with precision, as if they were completely unaffected by water currents.

Those mechs submerged in the darkness of the deep sea seemed to have lost their ranged capabilities. Although they tried to dodge, they were all hit and, without exception, turned into fireworks in the deep sea.

Using the light from their instantaneous explosion, Logan and Alexander were able to see the full appearance of these mechs through the scanning system inside their mechs... Their shapes were exactly the same as the mechs they knew, but there was one major difference.

That is… there was no cockpit. Even when slowing down and zooming in on some of the mech wreckage, the two couldn't find a cockpit. These mechs didn't have cockpits on the outside, nor were they hiding cockpits inside the hull. Similarly, they didn't have pilots.

A jumble of horror movie scenes flashed through Luo Gandao's mind. Suddenly, something occurred to him: "This can't be a United States mech. They shouldn't have mastered this kind of mature technology... nor would they send such a mature unmanned combat mech out to die!"
