Chapter 98 Initial Actions of Defection

"How much of this information is true or false?" Su Wanqing frowned as she looked at the encrypted information that Xiao Ran had captured on the screen.

Xiao Ran walked to the table, lit a cigarette, and took a deep drag. "It's very vague. The other party is using the base's internal emergency communication channel, but the encoding method has been modified. The content roughly expresses a desire for cooperation, saying that they are dissatisfied with the actions of the base's higher-ups, but they did not explicitly say that they were willing to defect. They only implied that they could provide some information in exchange for security."

"Safety? What kind of safety?" Lu Zhao raised his head from the corner, his voice calm but scrutinizing.

"The promise of security is itself a lure. Would the base let a traitor go so easily?"

"I think the problem isn't whether the other side will be discovered by the base, but rather their purpose."

Professor Yang adjusted his glasses. "What do they want from us? Information, supplies, or simply to escape?"

Su Wanqing walked to the map and pointed to an abandoned warehouse near the exit of the secret passage.

"If they want to cooperate, the best way is to make direct contact. We can use the operation of transferring supplies as cover and set up a transaction point near the exit of the secret passage. But be prepared, this could very well be a trap set by the base."

Lin Che stood to the side, silent. Night occupied his body, offering no opinion.

Su Wanqing knew that Ye had been observing and assessing the risks.

"Ye, what do you think?" Su Wanqing turned to Lin Che, her tone calm.

Lin Che's body trembled slightly, and a cold voice came out of his mouth.

“I suggest using the other person’s behavior for a lie detector test. The base’s intelligence system is very sophisticated; they have data on everyone’s behavior. I can analyze their words, actions, and even micro-expressions to determine whether they are telling the truth.”

Xiao Ran narrowed his eyes. "You can do that? This isn't just simple psychological analysis. The opponents are all battle-hardened warriors; they won't easily reveal any weaknesses."

"I'm not analyzing psychology, I'm analyzing data," Night's voice was devoid of emotion.

“I can find subtle changes in their behavior patterns that are related to lies. As long as they have access to the base’s intelligence system, I can find the flaws.”

Lu Zhao frowned. "This method is too risky. If Ye exposes his abilities, it will cause unnecessary trouble. Our current goal is to obtain information about the virus, not to confront the base's intelligence department."

“Risks are inevitable,” Ye said firmly. “But the rewards are equally enormous. If we can ascertain the true intentions of the defecting soldiers, we can avoid unnecessary losses. Moreover, the intelligence they possess may be of great help to us.”

Su Wanqing thought for a moment and finally nodded. "I agree to Ye's suggestion. Use the transfer of supplies as cover to make contact at the warehouse near the exit of the secret passage."

Ye was in charge of analyzing the enemy's behavior, Xiao Ran was in charge of vigilance, Lu Zhao was in charge of monitoring communications, and Professor Yang was in charge of data analysis. I personally led the team.

"Understood." Everyone responded in unison.

The warehouse was dark and damp, filled with a putrid smell. Su Wanqing stood in a corner of the warehouse, holding a pistol in her hand, her eyes warily scanning her surroundings.

Lin Che stood beside her, his face pale and his body trembling slightly.

“Relax,” Su Wanqing said softly. “I need your eyes, not your fear.”

Lin Che didn't answer, only nodded silently. Night seemed to have completely taken control of his body.

Xiao Ran and Lu Zhao stood guard at the two entrances to the warehouse, while Professor Yang secretly monitored communications.

Shortly after, footsteps sounded outside the warehouse door. Two soldiers in base uniforms entered, their faces tense and their eyes darting around.

"Who are you?" Su Wanqing asked coldly.

“We are…we are the fifth squad,” one of the soldiers said, his voice trembling slightly.

"We want to talk to you."

"What are you going to talk about?" Su Wanqing pressed.

“About…about the virus,” another soldier said. “We know you are investigating the truth about the virus, and we would like to provide some information.”

Night suddenly spoke, her voice echoing through the warehouse. "What information do you have? Tell me, and I might consider offering you some assistance."

The two soldiers paused, seemingly surprised by Ye Hui's sudden interruption. "We...we know that the virus samples from the lab were secretly moved to another location."

One of the soldiers said, “We don’t know the exact location, but we can provide some clues.”

Ye sneered. "Clues? What kind of clues? Don't try to fool us with some irrelevant information."

“We know…” another soldier hesitated for a moment before saying.

"The virus samples were divided into several parts and stored in different containers. One part was stored in a special freezer, which was numbered 327."

Night's eyes narrowed slightly. "327? Not bad. It seems you have indeed obtained some useful information. However, this is not enough."

He suddenly turned to Su Wanqing and said, "Captain, allow me to reveal some information to them."

Su Wanqing was somewhat puzzled. "What information?"

Night did not answer, but looked at the two warriors and said in a mocking tone.

"Did you know that the virus sample is not just a weapon? It's a tool for modifying humans. If we can master the technology to control the virus, we can create more powerful warriors and completely change the fate of humanity."

The two soldiers turned pale instantly, their eyes filled with fear.

“What…what did you say?” one of the soldiers asked, trembling.

“I’m stating the facts,” Night replied. “Everything Zhou Licheng has done is to achieve this goal. He believes that only through the modification of the virus can humanity evolve and survive in the apocalypse.”

"This...this is insane!" another soldier exclaimed.

"Viruses are the root of destruction, not the hope for evolution!"

Ye burst into laughter, a hint of madness in his voice. "Destruction and evolution are often intertwined. Only through destruction can evolution occur. You humans are always afraid of change, but you must understand that change is inevitable."

Su Wanqing frowned. She realized that Ye was using these defectors to instill his distorted ideology in them.

This is an extreme tactic, but it is very effective.

Lu Zhao transmitted a message through the communicator: "Captain, I detected a miniature positioning device in the other party's communicator. They are very likely being tracked by the base."

"Understood," Su Wanqing said softly. "Xiao Ran, stay alert. Prepare for battle."

Lu Zhao stood at the listening station on the perimeter of the base, carefully analyzing the communication records transmitted from the warehouse.

He noticed a persistent hint of hesitation and uncertainty in the words of the defector.

“They haven’t completely broken free from the base’s control,” Lu Zhao muttered to himself.

"They may just have been sent to gather intelligence on us, or to create chaos."

Professor Yang came to Lu Zhao's side and handed him a data report.

“I analyzed the movement patterns of the defectors and found that they had been frequently entering and leaving several sensitive areas of the base in recent months.”

This indicates that they are very familiar with the base and likely maintain contact with high-ranking officials.

Lu Zhao nodded. "My judgment was correct. We can't easily trust them. The cost of trust is too high at this stage."

"But we cannot completely deny their value," Professor Yang said.

"The clues they provide might help us find virus samples. Moreover, their knowledge of the base's interior is also of great help to us."

"I think they're just observing," Professor Yang continued.

"They are waiting for the right moment to see how the conflict between us and the base will develop. They will choose the side that is most beneficial to them."

“Perhaps,” Lu Zhao sighed. “This apocalypse is full of deception and betrayal; no one is entirely trustworthy.”
