Chapter 97 The Motives of Night
Su Wanqing walked to the action planning table and unfolded the base map. Lu Zhao had already circled the underground area connected by the secret passage with a red pen and marked a series of possible risk points.

The atmosphere was oppressive, filled with distrust.

"Professor Lu, regarding the separate area inside the secret passage, you mentioned before that Zhou Licheng might be storing weapons or energy there. Do you have any more specific speculations?"

Su Wanqing looked at Lu Zhao with sharp eyes.

Lu Zhao adjusted his glasses, his tone calm. "Based solely on the structural diagram, this area's power supply is independent of the base's main system, and it has additional cooling equipment, indicating that it is likely involved in some kind of experiment requiring precise temperature control."

As for weapons... it's a possibility, but more likely they will be high-tech devices, such as electromagnetic pulse equipment, or other systems that interfere with communications.

"This vague statement is not in line with your usual rigorous style."

Su Wanqing stared at Lu Zhao, her gaze unwavering. "What are you deliberately avoiding?"

Lu Zhao remained expressionless. "I'm merely stating the facts; the current information is insufficient to make a more accurate judgment."

If we must apply logic, then I believe Zhou Licheng's modus operandi involved multiple parallel lines of action, each with its own specific function; any single speculation could deviate from the truth.

Su Wanqing nodded and did not press further. Lu Zhao's answer was watertight, seemingly implying that he had limited information, or rather, that he did not want to reveal more.

She turned to Xiao Ran and asked, "Xiao Ran, how's it going on your end? How's the transfer of supplies progressing?"

Xiao Ran reported, "It's proceeding as planned. We've created the illusion of a leak of experimental materials in the open area, attracting the attention of the monitoring center. But they reacted faster than expected, sending people to seal off the relevant area and increasing security forces."

“That’s exactly what we want,” Su Wanqing said. “The more nervous you are, the easier it is to slip up.”

She paused for a moment, her gaze sweeping over everyone present before finally settling on Lin Che.

Lin Che's face was pale, and his eyes were lifeless. Night occupied his body, and although he maintained a calm appearance on the surface, Su Wanqing could feel an undercurrent surging within him.

"Lin Che, what impression do you have of that isolated area inside the secret passage? Did you and Ye receive any clues at the level of consciousness?" Su Wanqing asked directly.

Lin Che's body trembled slightly, as if resisting something. After a while, he replied in a hoarse voice, "I...I don't know. Ye...he rarely tells me those things."

"Very little? Or not at all?" Xiao Ran suddenly interjected, his tone laced with sarcasm.

"Lin Che, look at yourself now. You can't even speak clearly. Expecting you to provide useful information is probably just a pipe dream."

Lin Che's body trembled even more violently. He tried to refute, but found that he couldn't control his voice at all.

Night controlled his nervous system, preventing him from sending any signals of resistance.

Su Wanqing frowned; this internal conflict had reached a critical point.

"Xiao Ran, watch your words. We all know why Lin Che is in this state. We're not here to blame each other, but to complete our mission."

"I know, I know," Xiao Ran quickly replied, but his tone still carried a hint of disdain.

At this moment, Professor Yang walked over, holding a small scanner in his hand.

“Su Wanqing, I used carrier technology to implant a tracking and scanning program into the experimental equipment. If Ye communicates with the outside world through Lin Che's body, this program should be able to capture the signal.” “What were the results?” Su Wanqing asked eagerly.

Professor Yang shook his head. "There are no abnormalities yet. The signal has remained within the normal range, and no signs of data exchange have been detected."

Su Wanqing frowned even more. This meant that Ye was being extremely cautious, or rather, he hadn't even tried to contact the outside world.

If that's the case, he becomes even more unpredictable.

She took a deep breath, walked up to Lin Che, and said in a calm tone, "Ye, I know you're listening. I don't want to play mind games with you. I just want to know, why are you helping us? What exactly is your purpose?"

Lin Che's body stiffened for a moment, then he slowly raised his head, revealing a cold smile.

"Purpose? Why should I tell you my purpose? Do you think I would easily expose my plans?" Night's voice came out of Lin Che's mouth, full of sarcasm.

"You're testing me, aren't you?" Su Wanqing said. "You want to see how much I trust you, or rather, how much I'm afraid of you?"

"You're very clever," Night's voice said coldly. "I admit, I don't trust you much. After all, you're all human, while I... am different from you."

"Different? How are they different?" Su Wanqing pressed.

Night was silent for a moment before slowly saying, "I saw a future that you cannot see. I saw disaster, I saw destruction. Everything I did was to prevent those things from happening."

"Prevent a disaster?" Su Wanqing asked incredulously. "What does that have to do with Zhou Licheng? Why would you help him conduct those dangerous experiments?"

"Zhou Licheng was just a tool, a pawn to be used."

The voice of the night was filled with disdain. "What he researched was humanity's last hope for survival. Although the process was brutal, the result was worthwhile."

"Is the hope you're talking about using the virus to create even more powerful biological weapons?" Su Wanqing asked sharply.

Ye burst into laughter, a hint of madness in his voice. "Weapons? You're too naive. Those viruses are merely a catalyst, a tool to activate human potential. Only through hardship can humanity evolve and become stronger. Everything Zhou Licheng has done is to help humanity complete this evolution."

"Evolution?" Su Wanqing scoffed. "This is nothing short of a crazy experiment! You're gambling with human lives!"

Ye stopped laughing, turned to look at Su Wanqing, her eyes filled with contempt.

"Gambling? Perhaps. But this gamble concerns the future of humanity. You humans always like to dwell on the past and are afraid of change. But you must know that change is inevitable and evolution is eternal."

Lin Che's body suddenly trembled violently. He tried to regain control of his body, but found that he could not break free from the control of the night.

"Get out! Get out of my body!" Lin Che roared in his heart.

Ye said sarcastically, "You? What do you think you can do? You're just a piece of trash, a useless piece of garbage. Without my help, you'll have a hard time even surviving."

The atmosphere inside froze. Everyone realized that the true purpose of the night far exceeded their expectations.

He is not a simple ally, but a dangerous entity harboring enormous ambitions.

Su Wanqing knew that she had to find out Ye's true identity as soon as possible, otherwise they would face an even greater crisis.
