I built a manor in the Middle Ages
Chapter 9 Fence Man and Dog
Chapter 9 Fence Man and Dog
People cannot stand loneliness. Except for those church monks who are determined to live in seclusion in the mountains, few people can endure the long days alone.
This is also the reason why many nomadic people are so enthusiastic - they have not communicated with outsiders for many years, and when they finally meet one, they naturally start talking non-stop.
Luc originally thought that he was not such a person, until he brought home this black dog named "Little Charlie". Suddenly, Luc found that he often talked to himself in front of it, like a madman.
"Hey, little Charlie, you know what I'm going to do today?"
At daybreak, Luc opened the door, breathed in the fresh air, and muttered to little Charlie, who was wagging his tail at his feet.
"Wang!"
Little Charlie is dark all over, without a single stray hair, and is very beautiful.
The small body squatted on the ground, looked up at its owner, stuck out its tongue and barked.
"That's right, we need to open up the land!"
"I've finally managed to clear the weeds these past two days and clear out the land in front of the cabin. Now it's time to get down to work!"
"Of course, before that, I need to build a fence!"
It has been three days since we returned to the cabin. The journey took more than ten days, and apart from a bird's nest found on the thatched roof, there has been basically no change.
After getting over the fear of the unfamiliar environment on the first day, little Charlie had gradually become familiar with Luc. When he heard Luc's excited mumbling to himself, he tilted his head unconsciously, his dark eyes full of confusion.
Luc touched little Charlie's head. Of course, the dog didn't understand the meaning of planting crops, nor did he understand how eager he was to plant rye and wheat immediately.
However, wheat can usually be planted in late September, and it is only the end of July now, so Luc plans to do other things first.
The fence is not difficult to build, but it is definitely not a job that can be completed in a short time: it requires more wood, and each piece must be firmly rammed into the soil. In addition, in order to leave land for wheat, the fence must be wider.
Luc predicts it will take at least half a month.
Luc walked out of the room with little Charlie. The black dog, which was not as tall as Luc's calf, took short steps and tried hard to catch up with his master.
A man and a dog came to the river. Now Luc's hunting ability had been enhanced exponentially. He killed several fresh fish in a short time and took out the internal organs to feed little Charlie, who was so happy that he jumped for joy.
Luc doesn't plan to build a kennel for it yet. It's still too small, and living with him in the wooden house will ensure its safety. It won't be too late to move it out after it grows into a hunting dog.
On the way back from Ward Village, Luc discovered a wild boar cave. This discovery made Luc astonished. He also noticed a series of dog-shaped footprints on the side near the river.
This means one thing - his previous guess was correct, the elk died in the mouth of a wild beast!
The fence can be regarded as the second line of defense that Luc set up for himself.
As usual, Luc's primary goal is still to cut down trees. In this deserted forest, Luc is the master of the forest.
But unlike before, besides felling trees, I now have a new job:
"Sit down, Charlie!"
Luc waved his arms, trying to teach little Charlie to understand the instructions.
He didn't need a pet, he wanted a helper, but unfortunately Luc had no experience in dog training, or little Charlie was too stupid and didn't understand what Luc was doing at all. He stared at Luc with his big eyes, curiously looking at him, thinking that Luc was playing with him, and instead barked happily.
After giving several instructions, little Charlie still didn't understand, and Luc held his forehead helplessly.
"Maybe I can wait until it's hungry before training it." After a while, Luc finished cutting down the tree. The trunks for making a fence didn't need to be very thick, but they had to be high. The higher they were, the more difficult it would be for ordinary animals to climb over them. Luc also planned to sharpen the points on the fence one by one to increase its defensive capabilities.
Of course, if the wild boars from the wild boar cave that Luc discovered attacked, the fence would be useless.
A wild boar weighing at least two or three hundred pounds, with its brute force, could charge forward, and not only the fence, but even the wooden house might not be able to withstand it for long.
Fortunately, the wild boar cave is far away from him, and the wild boar will not attack him for no reason.
Luc's main defense was against the owners of the series of dog-shaped footprints - the wolves!
Luc placed the wood at an angle and chopped it from top to bottom with an axe. The tip of the stake didn't need to be very sharp, as long as it had a rough outline it was enough to scare many animals away.
After shaving one, he put it aside for later use. The amount of wood for the fence was huge. Luc worked for the whole morning but didn't even get one tenth of it.
At noon, Luc stewed chicken. When leaving Ward Village, Luc asked the village chief to give him a utensil. The village chief's so-called lack of pottery meant that he had no extra ones, but after Luc's repeated requests, he finally got a pottery jar the size of a head.
After filling the stream with salt, chicken, and yellow mushrooms, Luc began to train little Charlie.
Luc picked up a piece of chopped chicken breast and waved it in front of the drooling little Charlie. Charlie's slightly silly pupils kept spinning around in his eye sockets as the chicken meat kept coming out, and he couldn't help but bark: "Woof woof woof!"
"Shut up, little Charlie, no barking! If you want to eat you must obey my orders!"
Of course, little Charlie didn't understand what Luc said, but he could tell something from Luc's stern tone and expression. Dogs are always very good at observing people's expressions. Seeing this, he stopped barking, but whimpered in grievance, not understanding why his master not only didn't give him food but was also mean to him.
Seeing that little Charlie still couldn't understand what he meant, Luc had to take action. He stretched out his hand and forced the little black dog to sit down. In front of little Charlie's puzzled eyes, he suddenly handed him a piece of diced meat. After it stood up, he immediately stopped feeding it, then forced it to sit down again and continued feeding it. He stopped when it stood up. During the whole process, Luc kept saying "sit down" and made a downward gesture with his left hand.
After repeating this many times, little Charlie gradually began to cooperate with Luc. In the end, without Luc doing anything, he would just sit down on the ground when he heard the word "sit down".
"Well done, little Charlie. You are worthy of being the puppy I carefully selected!"
Luke laughed out loud, gave all the remaining chicken breasts to the little black dog, and happily touched the dog's head.
The little black dog ate the chicken happily, wagging its tail, and did not guard the food when being petted. It seemed that someone in Ward Village had helped it correct this problem.
After washing his hands, he came back and the chicken was already cooked. Pottery cooks food faster than thick pot cakes. Luc picked up the chicken and gobbled it up, throwing the bones to little Charlie from time to time. He enjoyed eating the bones covered with salt and meat residue.
The man and the dog ate all the chicken.
I continued to weave the fence in the afternoon. I finished about one-fifth of the materials in a whole day. After all the materials were out, I had to tie them together with vines, and then dig holes and erect them. In short, there was still work to do.
As night fell, Luc and little Charlie went into the cabin to rest. Luc lay on the bed while little Charlie lay on the floor. To prevent the other from getting wet, Luc even spread a layer of straw on the floor.
When the moon was high in the sky, Luc suddenly got up, cursing and angrily scolding the black dog, who didn't understand what was going on:
“Damn it, who told you to poop in the house?!”
"Tomorrow I'll give you a good training on how to control your butt!!"
