The unparalleled talent of the country started from Harbin Institute of Technology

Chapter 282, The Cycle of Amateur Scientist Combinations

Chapter 282, The Cycle of Amateur Scientist Combinations
On May 7, 1985, the auditorium at Harbin Institute of Technology was packed to capacity, and everyone listened attentively.

Today is the day Wang Duoyu is holding a lecture, and Qin Youhui came here specifically to attend. Even though he is not a math major, his math skills are good, and he passed the assessment.

As an aerospace engineering student, Qin Youhui's ability to pass the assessment for the lecture slots demonstrates his considerable mathematical talent.

"Professor Wang truly lives up to his reputation; he's incredibly talented."

As Qin Youhui listened to Wang Duoyu's report, his expression gradually became quite interesting.

Wang Duoyu has read all of the papers published in the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal. He has read all of the papers except for some that he was not interested in.

However, the papers he had discussed with Wang Duoyu were limited to mathematical research on some applied mathematical aspects, such as partial differential equations and Navier-Stokes equations. He knew about other basic mathematical theories, but had not discussed them with Wang Duoyu.

In addition, Qin Youhui also reviewed some of Wang Duoyu's unpublished papers, such as the singularity energy gradient theory, the mathematical expression of the time axis and the space axis, and the weighted essential non-oscillating algorithm, which are related to strong solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

Because Qin Youhui had always been a genius in the aerospace department, he was promoted by Director Ma Sijie for his handmade Mach ring engine and received the best treatment in the entire department.

From 1983 to July 1984, Qin Youhui was the darling of the aerospace department, but after the second half of 1984, he also joined the Mach 5 fighter jet project.

Because of his exceptional talent, he was quickly promoted from a junior researcher to the team leader of a small project by Wang Duoyu shortly after joining the Mach 5 fighter jet project.

Therefore, after a rigorous background check, Wang Duoyu handed over the confidential research paper he had developed to Qin Youhui.

These papers on strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are not easily understood by the average person.

It's not because they are highly classified, but because very few people understand them.

Wang Duoyu wouldn't have brought them out if he didn't have the qualifications.

The reason why Qin Youhui still had to participate in the assessment for the quota of the report meeting is very simple: one is the direction of mathematical application, and the other is the direction of basic mathematical theory research.

In addition, the number of places was already limited, and Qin Youhui was not a mathematics student. In order to avoid giving others a reason to criticize him, he took the initiative to sign up for the assessment.

Originally, Qin Youhui had hoped to attend the presentation on the proof of the approximate solution of the third-order equation for complex dynamical systems, but he suddenly decided to come and listen to it on a whim.

In addition, he had never attended the International Congress of Mathematicians and was not familiar with the atmosphere of such an event.

Now that Qin Youhui has come to participate, he realizes that this other world is so different.

From 9 a.m. to noon, Wang Duoyu was required to present three papers on the geometric Langlands conjecture.

In Wang Duoyu's third paper, which serves as a bridge, he extends the result proven in his second paper—the equivalence result—to a more general case.

Meanwhile, Wang Duoyu also provided crucial insights into the compatibility of geometric Langlands functors and constant term functors through Katzmoody's localization technique.

Qin Youhui listened with great interest, even scribbling and drawing on his manuscript paper as he listened.

Of course, his ears didn't stop listening while he was writing.

This wasn't a lapse in concentration, so he wouldn't fall behind Wang Duoyu's train of thought.

People nearby saw him doing this and, although they wanted to advise him, ultimately remained silent.

Because in the short moment he turned his head away in a daze, when he turned back again, he could no longer keep up with Wang Duoyu's train of thought.

No matter how hard he tried, he still couldn't understand.

After he gave up in frustration, he turned to look at Qin Youhui, who was still writing and drawing, and was thinking happily. It was clear that Qin Youhui had taken his words to heart.

There are so many math geniuses!

At the same time, in the conference hall of a hotel off the Harbin Institute of Technology campus, there was also an amateur mathematician who listened very attentively.

This is Yasuhito Hino, a former math prodigy from the University of Tokyo. He was expelled from the university for 'mental illness' and is now considered an amateur scientist.

However, Yasuhito Hino is very fond of mathematics, especially algebra, geometry, and topology. The Langlands program is his latest research direction in recent years.

He wrote several papers, but after submitting them, they were all rejected by various journals for reasons such as "not being able to understand them".

Because what he wrote was indeed illegible, the journal editor couldn't understand it at all after reading it, and many of the characters were unrecognizable. So the editor wrote to Hino Yasuhito, asking him to write the paper according to the journal's submission format, or to have someone edit it on a computer and print it out before submitting it.

But nothing came of it.

Yasuhito Hino would only submit these papers in handwritten form. As for editing them on a personal computer or computer before agreeing to submit them, that was unacceptable to him.

Although Hino Yasuhito is a rich second-generation heir with plenty of money and computers, he doesn't play with them.

Therefore, Yasuhito Hino gave up submitting his work.

He only learned about the direct flights to Harbin by chance, and he checked the flight time, which was just over an hour, very close.

That's why he took advantage of the wave of the report meeting to come to Harbin to attend it.

Unfortunately, he wasn't invited, so he wasn't qualified to go to the main hall to listen to the report. Fortunately, the hotel was broadcasting the report live, although there were some differences, and he still couldn't ask questions.

But he was already quite satisfied to be able to hear the report.

Wang Duoyu's paper on the proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture truly enlightened him.

As he listened, during a break in the Q&A session in the auditorium, Hino Yasuhito couldn't help but think of something: should he submit a paper to the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal?

cast!
Hino Yasuhito didn't hesitate for long before making up his mind. He even wanted to stay in Harbin to see if he could find an opportunity to enter Harbin Institute of Technology.

Inside the auditorium, Wang Duoyu was giving a report, unaware of all this.

In one morning, he completed the presentations of three papers.

In fact, according to the conventions of the International Congress of Mathematicians, each report session is only one hour or forty-five minutes long, focusing on a specific research direction or a particular research paper.

So Wang Duoyu is currently in a situation similar to this: three hours, three papers.

However, all three of his papers can actually be expanded upon, because they are still highly condensed, which is why many people are completely baffled by them.

However, Wang Duoyu's report meeting only lasted two days, and the schedule was very tight.

To be fair, if he hadn't completed two major research achievements in the past six months—the third-order equation and the reciprocity law—he could have explained them in more detail over two days.

It's a pity no.

For the rest of the time, Wang Duoyu was giving reports.

He reviewed the four major scientific research achievements: the fundamental lemma, the geometric Langlands conjecture, the reciprocity law conjecture, and the proof of complex dynamical systems for approximate solutions of three-solution equations.

In the past, many people would challenge Wang Duoyu, but now when he asks questions, everyone is very gentle.

Of course, there were also about ten people who raised many questions to Wang Duoyu in the auditorium, but Wang Duoyu answered them one by one.

This even led to some embarrassing situations.

If there were any doubts, Wang Duoyu would have been questioned during the review stage before the paper was published.

The review team for the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal is now incredibly powerful.

The number of Fields Medal winners alone has already exceeded ten.

Although none of these ten people are all-rounders in basic mathematics, they are all top mathematicians themselves, so they are not too different.

On the other hand, in addition to these Fields Medal winners, there are also top mathematicians who are no less deserving of the Fields Medal, such as Robert Langlands, Andrew Wiles, Jean-Bourguigne, and Arancone.

Others include associate researchers at the Harbin Institute of Advanced Studies, such as Severubuk and Bonaventura Pierce.

Let me put it this way: the current mathematics team in Harbin is indeed incredibly strong.

The most important point is not how powerful the review team is, but that Wang Duoyu will conduct a comprehensive review of his own paper to ensure its accuracy.

He probably wouldn't have done this before, not because he was very confident back then but is not now, but because he was lazy.

The reason he is conducting multiple inspections and reviews now is not because he has become more diligent, but rather because he needs to protect his reputation and cherish his image.

If his research findings are discovered and proven to be unacceptable, then...

Or if someone finds a counterexample, then we'll become a laughing stock.

Wang Duoyu really didn't want to end up like John Milnor, with someone finding a counterexample.

Therefore, he needs to be extremely cautious.

The two-day conference flew by without any unexpected events.

After the report meeting, Qin Youhui had many questions he wanted to ask Wang Duoyu, but when he saw that the latter was surrounded by so many foreigners, he could only stop and not ask.

He wrote down all the questions, planning to ask them the next time he saw Wang Duoyu.

The Q&A session at the conference was very short, only fifteen minutes. Qin Youhui didn't get a chance to ask a question, since there were more than 3,000 people in the auditorium, and almost half of them raised their hands to ask questions.

Because the people who can sit in the auditorium are not ordinary people; they are at least at the level of mathematics master's degree holders.

After the report meeting, one thing was almost certain: the four major scientific research achievements published by Wang Duoyu had been recognized by the global mathematics community.

In fact, they may have had doubts and many questions before the report meeting.

However, after the report meeting, all the issues they raised had been resolved, so basically, these achievements had passed the 'assessment'.

All cutting-edge scientific theoretical achievements are built upon the foundations laid by predecessors, with incremental additions.

Once published through official channels, these findings will be questioned by the global mathematics community, and only after being questioned can they be accepted.

This is science.

Amateur scientists are different. Their circle is very complex, and they often come up with subversive theories. Regardless of whether these theories are true or false, they will not be accepted.

Because accepting these disruptive theories would mean negating the existing scientific system, but is that even possible?
Therefore, even if these theories published by amateur scientists are universal truths, they are still unacceptable.

After the report meeting, Su Zhenghuai received several hundred applications.

The reason for such an exaggerated number of applications is that Wang Duoyu reiterated his conditions for recruiting students at the report meeting.

Liu Deben asked him to do this because it was a very good opportunity. So many people had come to the event, and there were more than 4,000 people listening to the report at the hotel outside the school.

If we don't take this opportunity to do some advertising, when will we?
Besides, those who are able to attend the report must be quite capable, no matter what.

After receiving so many applications, Su Zhenghuai could only arrange for someone to help with the review.

Just as busy as Su Zhenghuai was the editorial department of the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal, as they received a large number of paper submissions immediately after the report meeting.

Several of these papers belong to Yasuhito Hino, as well as to other "amateur scientists" like Hino.

These amateur scientists are not incompetent; for example, they can create perpetual motion machines. They are indeed very capable, but only within their own fields.

However, in the real field of scientific research, it's hard to say.

Unlike other mathematics journals, the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal is relatively more responsible.

The submissions from several amateur scientists, including Yasuhito Hino, were taken seriously by the editorial department. They sent people to the hotel to contact these "amateur scientists," patiently negotiated with them, and helped them complete the editing of their papers.

Harbin Institute of Technology has personal computers like these; they could easily edit the code, print it out, and then have these amateur scientists confirm it.

After all, mathematics is very rigorous and cannot tolerate even the slightest error.

Within a week of the report meeting concluding, the bustling tourist season in Harbin finally began to fade away.

Over the past two weeks, the food street near Harbin Institute of Technology has truly experienced a sales boom.

Whether it's a print shop, a restaurant, or a hotel or restaurant, their business is booming.

Banks are also doing quite well.

The banks were also crowded with foreigners because the RMB they had exchanged at Yanjiagang Airport or before arriving was not enough.

Prices in Harbin aren't actually that high, but since they live there for a long time and spend money lavishly, they naturally don't notice how quickly their money is disappearing.

Many people were reluctant to leave after the lecture, either because they were attracted by the food or because they wanted to stay at Harbin Institute of Technology.

Many people with dreams and aspirations aspire to become Wang Duoyu's students, but few possess the actual ability to achieve them.

Even if they can't become Wang Duoyu's students, they still hope to stay at Harbin Institute of Technology because it is quite attractive to them.

Wang Meili, Wang Meihe, Lu Qingsong, and others, who had just returned from Yanjiagang Airport, noticed a significant increase in foreigners on the nearby streets as they approached Harbin Institute of Technology.

When Wang Duoyu came home for dinner that evening, the two sisters told their ninth brother about it.

"There must still be some people who haven't left."

Wang Duoyu calmly recounted recent events and then inquired about the two sisters' current situation in Tokyo.

Since both sisters are pregnant, they don't come back every week, but only once every two weeks.

Li Rongrong and Lu Yuening, the two little ones, also spent half a month in Tokyo, and then came back to Harbin Institute of Technology to spend half a month here.

To be honest, Wang Junhong was extremely envious of such a young age, having to go on a "business trip" like this.

This caused Wang Junhong to cause trouble frequently, which eventually led to his father disciplining him.

Talking to the little guy nicely won't work; only my Sichuan mountain delicacies and bamboo shoot stir-fried with pork can control him.

Liu Xiaoli wouldn't hit him, but Wang Duoyu would definitely beat him with a stick if the little guy angered the adults.

"Well, things are pretty much the same in Tokyo now. The economy is doing quite well. Jianchao told me that Pandora has recently opened a branch in Tokyo, and the current operations seem to be going quite well."

Upon hearing Wang Meili's words, Wang Duoyu nodded silently.

Pandora is a high-end brand, and after making such a big splash last Christmas, it has now really taken its marketing to the next level.

Tokyo is the capital of the world's second-largest economy, and the city is very large, so establishing a branch here is inevitable.

Furthermore, Pandora immediately purchased the most prominent shop in Ginza, buying an entire floor of it.

When it comes to marketing, you have to look to Pandora.

The fact that someone could afford to buy an entire floor of Ginza speaks volumes about their financial strength.

Of course, Pandora's membership system was also fully activated after entering Tokyo.

Because Pandora is an American brand, it's very famous in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Boston.

Such a high-end brand, with such popularity and excellent product quality, is naturally sought after by consumers.

Especially for those who have become rich overnight, they are even more eager for external recognition.

Without a doubt, a 'newcomer' like Pandora is the most suitable candidate.

Wang Duoyu was unaware of Pandora's marketing efforts in Tokyo, nor did he pay much attention to them.

At this stage, his biggest concern is whether the Plaza Accord will be signed as scheduled in September.

Half a month later, on May 25th, Wang Duoyu returned to his office in the mathematics department's teaching building. Today, he had Burghane come over in person and submitted more than twenty papers.

"Professor Wang, these are all papers that need your help to review."

"so much?"

Burghane thought Wang Duoyu was blaming him for not doing his job well, wondering why so many papers had been handed over to him for review.

So he quickly explained:

"Professor Wang, our journal has recently received many paper submissions. After several rounds of screening, we now have fifty-six submissions left, of which thirty-one have been submitted to the Harbin Institute of Advanced Studies."

So the remaining 25 copies will stay at Harbin Institute of Technology.

At Harbin Institute of Technology's Department of Mathematics, only Wang Duoyu himself is currently qualified to conduct the final review of these papers. "So many high-quality papers?"

Upon hearing this, Wang Duoyu raised an eyebrow and asked.

The Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal is no longer what it was when it was first established a few years ago, when it might not receive a single high-quality paper for more than half a year.

To be honest, it's extremely rare to receive 56 papers that have made it to the final review stage at once.

How could there be so many papers of this caliber, which are not commonplace?

Unless the researchers at the Harbin Institute of Advanced Studies each write one.

But Wang Duoyu knew that in six months, the Institute for Advanced Study could only produce a maximum of twenty such papers.

Sometimes, there isn't even that much production.

"Yes, we've received quite a few submissions from outside the campus, and many people are still waiting at our off-campus hotels."

Upon hearing Jean Burghane's words, Wang Duoyu was taken aback.

Perhaps he pays too little attention to the outside world.

In May, aside from the closed-door meeting at the beginning of the month, there were mostly report meetings.

After the lecture, he exchanged ideas with many mathematics professors from around the world, and his schedule was packed almost every day.

Therefore, he simply didn't have time to pay attention to what was happening outside.

To put it simply, he hasn't left the school for almost a month.

Today is already the 25th, time flies!

"okay, I get it!"

Wang Duoyu nodded and then began reviewing the papers.

There were a total of 25 papers, which took him half a day to complete.

Apart from eight papers of lower quality, the other seventeen were all publishable, but of these seventeen papers, only three were of the highest quality.

However, even these three, which are of the highest quality, are only barely comparable to the quality of his previous papers on mathematical problems.

The mathematical community is not lacking in problems, but these problems are also divided into different levels.

Just like the Langlands Program, there are a great many mathematical problems within this program, including Fermat's Last Theorem, the Riemann Hypothesis, and the functor conjecture, which are extremely difficult, world-renowned, and require a very long time to solve.

There are also some less important mathematical problems, such as the fundamental lemma and the reciprocity conjecture.

Of course, this doesn't mean that problems like the reciprocity law conjecture are simple; in fact, they are quite difficult.

Simply put, any mathematician who proves the fundamental lemma or the reciprocity conjecture, as long as they are under forty years old, has a chance to win the Fields Medal.

The reason I say "maybe" is because it can't happen again like 1983, a time of fierce competition.

After all, Arancone, who was sitting on the sidelines, originally thought he would definitely not miss the spot, but he really did miss it.

People shouldn't be too confident.

With so many papers published in the Harbin Institute of Technology's mathematics journal this year, there's no shortage of papers to be published this year.

Wang Duoyu is currently focusing on three of the papers, because all three are by the same author: Hino Yasuhito!

A math enthusiast from Tokyo!
"Xiao Su, could you help me find out the authors of these three papers? I need their detailed information."

Su Zhenghuai was called in and then heard Wang Duoyu's work arrangements.

To be honest, Wang Duoyu didn't discriminate, but he couldn't get past the mental hurdle of asking him to teach a student in Tokyo.

The reason he dared to say that publishing two papers in top journals would make someone his student was because he was certain that Tokyo, and many other places around the world, would not allow their top students to come to Harbin.

To everyone's surprise, a student with such outstanding abilities as Yasuhito Hino actually came to Harbin Institute of Technology.

Furthermore, all the papers are published through the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal. Can Wang Duoyu stop this?
He couldn't stop it.

Because Bulgean and others were watching him, and students like Yorkz and Bocherz were also observing him.

Unless Wang Duoyu can find flaws in Hino Yasuhito's three papers, proving that the papers cannot pass, or that they are plagiarized or something.

But Wang Duoyu confirmed that they really couldn't find it.

Since he couldn't find it, he had no choice but to give up.

This also means that he needs to take this person on as his student, but this person is a local from Tokyo.

That's a Japanese name, how could Wang Duoyu not recognize it?
What?

He definitely can't do that.

Therefore, we must find a way.

Su Zhenghuai was taken aback when he heard this. This job was a bit unexpected, but he quickly realized what was going on and immediately made the arrangements.

In less than a day, Su Zhenghuai had already received the results.

Thanks to the increased exchanges between Harbin and Tokyo, Su Zhenghuai was able to quickly contact the relevant staff in Tokyo for assistance.

Hino Yasuhito was not considered an ordinary person at the University of Tokyo, so it was relatively easy to find information about him.

In addition, Hino Yasuhito is a second-generation rich kid; his father is the chairman of a car repair group with a net worth of about 20 million US dollars.

Such a rich second-generation is indeed very impressive.

After finding the information, Su Zhenghuai quickly placed it on Wang Duoyu's desk.

Wang Duoyu, who had just returned from lunch, saw this document.

After a quick glance, Wang Duoyu learned that Hino Yasuhito had actually been expelled from the University of Tokyo on the grounds of being "mentally ill." He couldn't help but wonder what the inside story was.

No wonder this is yet another story of a genius?

Furthermore, Hino Yasuhito's father is a wealthy man, so logically he would have contacted the leadership of the University of Tokyo to inquire about the situation; it's impossible that he was expelled just like that.

For a student, being expelled from school has a significant impact.

Therefore, Wang Duoyu asked Su Zhenghuai to continue the investigation.

At this point, Wang Duoyu was also inclined to accept this student.

Based on current information, Hino Yasuhito is very likely a mathematical genius, but for some reason, he was eventually expelled from school.

The fact that Hino Yasuhito was still able to write three such good papers after dropping out of school shows that his talent in mathematics is still worthy of recognition.

However, this guy probably has some minor health issues, which is why he was expelled from school.

"A lunatic? Ha, that's interesting!"

Wang Duoyu muttered to himself, then stopped paying attention to the matter because he needed to go to the laboratory building to work today.

When Qin Youhui arrived at the laboratory building, he was already waiting impatiently.

"Professor, I have a few questions I'd like to ask you."

Upon seeing the person, Qin Youhui rushed forward with great joy, even though he urgently needed to urinate, he held it in.

Although he knew that holding in urine was not a good habit, because Harbin Institute of Technology conducts physical examinations every year, especially for researchers in the laboratory, everyone must participate in the physical examination.

The university requires researchers to pay attention to their physical health, and medical examinations are mandatory.

With more frequent physical examinations, people often chat about health tips during their spare time, such as avoiding bad habits like holding in urine.

But Qin Youhui didn't care about that right now; he just wanted to ask first.

“No problem!” Wang Duoyu replied with a smile. He thought it was just a problem with the Mach 5 fighter jet project, but it turned out to be a problem he had raised at the previous meeting.

Goodness, Qin Youhui is truly a genius.

With such a talent for mathematics, he also has remarkable talent in areas such as aerospace engines.

That's great.

Harbin Institute of Technology is truly a place where hidden talents abound.

After spending some time answering Qin Youhui's questions, Wang Duoyu was about to say something when he saw the other party suddenly leave in a hurry.

Wang Duoyu shook his head and chuckled, then turned back to his work.

Half a day later, he came out of the laboratory building, and at this time, Qin Youhui had been promoted to the next level.

The latter's talent is indeed exceptional, so Wang Duoyu naturally wants to give him more responsibility.

The Mach 5 fighter jet project has been underway for three years.

Despite the long period of time and the resulting research findings, Wang Duoyu felt it was still insufficient.

Therefore, if more exceptionally talented researchers were to participate, it might actually accelerate the development of the subsonic ramjet engine.

Once the engine is developed, Wang Duoyu can free up time and allocate more manpower to tackle the development of other components.

The most challenging aspect of this project was not the technology itself, but rather the research and development of materials.

Even though Wang Duoyu informed the researchers in these project teams about the specific characteristics of the materials, such as the pressure, temperature, and corrosion resistance they needed to withstand, and even the approximate proportions of the metal elements, the specific proportions and the material manufacturing technology were still a big problem.

If it were that easy, foreigners would have developed it long ago.

Over the next few days, Wang Duoyu focused his attention on the Yaran ramjet engine project, and he didn't even have time to look at the investigation data about Hino Yasuhito that Su Zhenghuai had brought back.

Inside the laboratory building, Wang Duoyu finally mentioned for the first time how to solve the problem of zero-speed startup.

As is well known, ramjet engine technology is not a high-tech field; its theory has existed for a long time.

However, this thing has two major problems: one is that it cannot start at zero speed, and the other is that this engine will have a thrust trap problem when it transitions from a sub-fuel state to a ramjet state.

The J58 variable cycle engine of the Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft has already provided a solution to these two major problems.

It can also be said that the J58 variable cycle engine was a technological pioneer of ramjet engines.

Its working principle is very simple: the J58 can adjust its jet speed according to flight requirements, just like a car's transmission. It can select the most suitable thrust mode in different flight phases, thereby improving fuel efficiency and flight performance.

However, the Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, equipped with the J58 engine, weighs 30 tons on its own and 77 tons in total, but most of its weight is fuel, and it is specially developed fuel.

Even so, the Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft only flew a distance of 5,000 kilometers.

Of course, the J58 is not a true variable cycle ramjet engine; at most, it is a quasi-variable cycle engine.

Because it simply switches freely between turbojet and turbofan engine modes, and can also adjust the bypass ratio within a certain range.

The bypass ratio refers to the ratio of the area of the outer bypass duct to the area of the inner bypass duct. The bypass ratio of a turbojet engine is 0 because it has no outer bypass duct.

Generally, the higher the bypass ratio, the more fuel-efficient the aircraft is, but the slower its flight speed will be.

Conversely, the smaller the bypass ratio, the more fuel the aircraft consumes, but the faster its flight speed.

There is also a special case here: if a high bypass ratio aircraft insists on flying at high speed, it will actually consume more fuel.

This is why turbojet engines are more fuel-efficient at high speeds, while turbofan engines are more fuel-efficient at low speeds.

"Over the past three years, we have made comprehensive efforts to tackle the relevant technologies of the Asia Gas ramjet engine. Although our engine has not yet completed wind tunnel testing, I believe it will be completed soon."

In the conference room of the laboratory building, Wang Duoyu convened a meeting with all project team members of the entire Yaran ramjet engine project and solemnly stated:

"Now that this project has come to a temporary halt, it's time for us to start a new one."

"Everyone knows that a ramjet engine cannot start at zero speed, so if our fighter jets want to start without the aid of rockets, other engines, or flight devices, then we must solve this problem."

"We've all studied the technology of the J58 variable cycle engine, so we won't go through it again today. What we're launching now is the new engine program, and that's the real engine our Mach 5 fighter jet will use."

"I call this engine a turbo-based combined cycle engine. It is actually a technology that combines a turbojet engine with a subsonic ramjet engine."

As Wang Duoyu spoke, Qin Youhui, Xu Yimin, Kong Zhendong, and others listened very attentively.

This turbine-based combined cycle engine comes in both series and parallel configurations, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

In series mode, the air intakes can be shared, while in parallel mode, the nozzle spacing is shorter, which can reduce thrust loss.

Compared to the sub-steam ramjet engine, the components of this turbine-based combined cycle engine are much more complex, including ramjet fuel flow, low-pressure turbine adjustable guide vanes, front variable area duct ejector, turbine/ramjet mode switching valve, swashplate wedge angle, swashplate rotation angle, and so on.

"The design goals of this engine are very clear. Typically, in the speed range below Mach 3, it uses turbojet mode, where the turbojet can mimic the J58 mode to increase thrust. However, when the speed exceeds Mach 3, the system switches to ramjet engine mode."

Wang Duoyu's voice resounded throughout the conference room, and everyone was very attentive, afraid of missing any detail.

"The maximum speed that a subsonic ramjet engine can typically achieve is Mach 5.5. Going any faster would be quite difficult, but of course, the actual speed depends on flight testing."

Even if it can reach a speed of Mach 5.5, its fuel consumption rate will inevitably be astonishing.

According to the design of this fighter jet, apart from the payload and the aircraft's own weight, all other places are used as fuel tanks as possible.

Only large fuel tanks can extend the combat radius of a fighter jet.

A speed of Mach 5.5, if one can maintain that speed for more than an hour, then that technology is truly impressive.

Because a one-hour flight can cover a distance of 6,600 kilometers.

This distance is enough for a plane to make a round trip from Harbin to Guangzhou.

Therefore, the fuel tank must be large enough and fuel efficiency must be improved; only in this way can we achieve better results.

"Everyone can turn to page 37 of the proposal. The combined cycle technology I mentioned allows the ramjet engine to start from a standstill, while also overcoming the technical challenge of turbocharged engines not being able to accelerate quickly. You can take a look at the technical details first."

In fact, the mode mentioned by Wang Duoyu involves using a turbojet engine to increase the speed to Mach 3, and then starting the ramjet engine to stabilize the speed at around Mach 5.

Therefore, although its design is just an air intake, it is divided into two parts: one part is used by the turbojet engine and the other part is used by the ramjet engine.

When the speed exceeds Mach 3, the ramjet engine's air intake opens and begins to work, becoming the main power source, or the turbojet engine's air intake closes.

"Professor Wang, if the speed has reached Mach 3, at such hypersonic speeds, it might be difficult to reliably ignite the ramjet engine. How should we solve this technical problem?"

Just then, Kong Zhendong suddenly raised a question.

Qin Youhui and the others looked over, their eyes filled with inquiry.

Clearly, this is a very important issue.

As is well known, flames usually propagate at subsonic speeds, but when the airflow reaches supersonic speeds, it becomes difficult to ignite stably and mix and burn, and there is not enough time.

Previously, Wang Duoyu and his team had been conducting research on flame stabilizers for subsonic ramjet engines, and their project only achieved a speed of Mach 2.5.

If we exceed this speed, I don't know if we can do it.

Upon hearing this, Wang Duoyu immediately burst out laughing:
"Didn't I keep having you conduct research on flame stabilizers, including techniques like using cavities in the recirculation zone, distributed ignition, or shock wave focusing effects? Have you all forgotten about those?"

"Otherwise, do you think we've been wasting our lives for the past three years? I wouldn't do something pointless."

As Wang Duoyu finished speaking, thunderous applause erupted in the conference room.
