The unparalleled talent of the country started from Harbin Institute of Technology
Chapter 281, The 77-Year-Old Super-Age Fan
Chapter 281, A 77-Year-Old Fan
On May 1, 1985, International Labor Day, Wang Duoyu took his two sons, Liu Xiaoli, Li Rongrong, and Lu Yuening to the zoo.
Spring comes a little late to Harbin; at this time of year in May, it's already summer in the south.
But in Harbin, although it's called summer, it's actually spring, or rather, somewhere between early and late spring, because spring here is actually quite short.
In the blink of an eye, it's already May from March.
For the past two months, Wang Duoyu has stayed at school and hasn't gone anywhere else.
The proof of the reciprocity law conjecture was submitted to Jean-Baptiste in mid-March. After a brief review, the editor-in-chief of the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal immediately had it copied and contacted John Milnor and others.
Robert Langlands was the first to arrive at the editorial office of the Department of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology, followed closely by Charles Feufman and others.
The publication of a single paper immediately attracted more than ten Fields Medal winners.
The super-luxury review team assembled from these individuals conducted a two-week review process, and everyone was utterly impressed by Wang Duoyu, the "Emperor of Mathematics."
He dropped another bombshell, pushing the Langlands program a step further.
Because the reciprocity law conjecture essentially establishes the Langlands correspondence, it is of great significance to the entire Langlands program.
After the review was completed, Robert Langlands and others came to the teaching building of the Mathematics Department of Harbin Institute of Technology. They almost knelt down in front of Wang Duoyu.
The group was so excited that they cried and howled in front of Wang Duoyu, unwilling to leave for a long time.
In the end, Wang Duoyu made a phone call and had Yuan Zuliang and the others come in to send these "debt dodgers" away; otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to have any peace and quiet.
After entering April, the paper proving the reciprocity law conjecture was successfully published. At that time, Wang Duoyu had already returned to his hometown to pay respects to his ancestors.
However, the paper proving the reciprocity law conjecture caused a huge uproar in the global mathematics community.
As one of the mainstream research topics in the current mathematical community, the Langlands Program still has quite a few research teams.
Although the largest research team, Robert Langlands and his team, are all in Harbin, there are also many researchers and mathematics professors at Princeton University who are studying the Langlands program.
As is well known, the Langlands Program is extremely difficult, with many of its conjectures and mathematical problems having a very high degree of difficulty.
To put it simply, John Milnor had been proving the funconic conjecture for several years, and Wang Duoyu had put it last.
Previously, Wang Duoyu had already proven Fermat's Last Theorem, the Fundamental Lemma, the Geometric Langlands Conjecture, and the Reciprocity Law Conjecture, all of which are extremely difficult mathematical problems.
For mathematicians worldwide, proving just one of these conjectures or mathematical problems would be enough to make their lives worthwhile.
They could even produce any paper on the geometric Langlands conjecture, and they would have made their mark on the history of mathematics.
There are a total of five papers on the geometric Langlands conjecture, and each paper is very important.
Although the geometric Langlands conjecture is not as famous as the Poincaré conjecture, its difficulty level is by no means low.
After reading Wang Duoyu's paper proving the reciprocity law conjecture, Professor Andre Weil of Princeton University remarked:
"Perhaps he really can fully deduce the Langlands program."
If you do the math, Wang Duoyu has already produced four major scientific research achievements: Fermat's Last Theorem, Fundamental Lemma, Geometric Langlands Conjecture, and Reciprocity Law Conjecture. That's incredibly impressive.
"Unlikely?"
von Lawrence and others raised objections because there were still many problems facing the Langlands program, such as the Riemann Hypothesis and the functor conjecture.
The functor conjectures include the Artin conjecture, the Ramanujan conjecture, and the Sato-Tate conjecture.
Another important special case in the functor conjecture is the Langlands reciprocity law, or the Langlands correspondence. An L-function defined by the automorphic representation of the reduced algebraic group over a global field is called an automorphic L-function.
Wang Duoyu has now proven the reciprocity law conjecture and established the Langlands correspondence.
Simply put, he merely advanced the functor conjecture by one step, nothing more.
Therefore, from this perspective, we can see just how difficult the functor conjecture is.
On the other hand, the difficulty of the Riemann Hypothesis is self-evident.
"Let's wait and see, he might give us a surprise."
Andrei Weil laughed as he spoke.
From the Poincaré conjecture to the Fermat conjecture, Wang Duoyu has produced at least ten very important basic mathematical research results over the years.
There are dozens of other scientific research achievements, both large and small.
Wang Duoyu won the Fields Medal last time, and he will certainly win it next year as well, because he now holds five major research achievements: a paper proving the cellular conjecture, a paper proving the restricted Bernside conjecture, a paper proving the geometric Langlands conjecture, and a paper proving the fundamental lemma and reciprocity law conjecture of the automorphic form theory in the Langlands program.
Let alone five, any mathematician who holds just one of these certificates is practically guaranteed a Fields Medal.
Wang Duoyu already holds five Fields Medals, so he is a shoo-in for the prize at next year's International Congress of Mathematicians.
Besides the United States, many places, including Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Russian Empire, are also abuzz with excitement because of Wang Duoyu's paper. However, not many people have come to Harbin because May is just around the corner.
Throughout April, the global mathematics community was abuzz with discussion because of Wang Duoyu's paper.
This also elevates the Langlands Programme to a higher level.
It even spread outwards, showing signs of becoming a viral sensation.
In the past, there were math professors like John Stilwell who specialized in popularizing science, and there are still quite a few math professors like that today.
Therefore, many people outside the field, and even ordinary people, can learn about the development of the mathematics community through newspapers.
With the arrival of May, many people began heading to Harbin starting at the end of April.
Northern Airlines therefore applied to Wang Duoyu to start a trial operation.
Since late April, many people have been arriving in Tokyo, then transferring to Beijing, and finally heading to Harbin.
Many people have noticed that even though they have seen Northern Airlines planes at Tokyo Airport, why aren't they picking up passengers?
In addition, many people at the Harbin Institute of Advanced Studies have also reported this issue, as have foreign companies such as Motorola and Nintendo.
These people are all well-off; they don't want to wait for a connecting flight in Beijing because connecting flights involve all sorts of waiting, and flying makes their butts ache.
On the other hand, the planes that fly from Beijing to Harbin are still the old ones.
Previously, it wasn't so bad that China Northern Airlines didn't buy back the Boeing 737 and Airbus A300; people just grumbled a bit at most.
But now, we see these 737 and 300 planes flying in the sky every day, but they don't sell tickets to the public. The explanation given is that they need to test the flight routes, etc.
Goodness, does testing a flight path really take this long?
As a result, after receiving complaints for a long time, Northern Airlines could no longer withstand the pressure and had to consult with Wang Duoyu.
Even so, Su Zongxi and Ma Mingjiang delayed for a long time, even passing the buck to each other, neither of them wanting to come to Wang Duoyu.
At the end of April, Su Zongxi, having no other choice, had to personally visit Wang Duoyu.
After listening, the latter finally nodded and said that a trial operation was possible, but it was necessary to take it with 200% seriousness because this matter was extremely important.
Wang Duoyu gave the following instructions at the time:
"As the first modern airline in China, the standards that Northern Airlines is implementing now are the future!"
"You must execute this meticulously. Zero accidents are our bottom line. Remember, it's the bottom line, not a goal. It's the most basic requirement we must achieve."
"Anything that jeopardizes absolute safety must be compromised; otherwise, it's better not to fly at all."
Wang Duoyu has a deep understanding of the importance of flight safety.
Because we are all mortals, not Iron Man, much less gods.
When faced with a plane crash, we flesh and blood are completely powerless to resist. The despair we feel is something that those who haven't experienced it can't understand.
Su Zongxi solemnly accepted the order and then went to carry it out.
At the end of April, after only a meager five-month flight safety test, China Northern Airlines finally began trial operations.
Although before this, Northern Airlines had even carried Wang Duoyu and others, which could be considered a trial operation.
But they are different.
This will be the first time in late April that China Northern Airlines has accepted tickets from outside sources and transported passengers on a large scale.
After the announcement was made, executives from foreign companies such as Motorola and Nintendo were all very excited.
Because they no longer have to endure the terrible flight experience they had before.
On May 1st, Northern Airlines launched its first trial flight, departing from Tokyo and bound for Harbin.
Several other flights departed from Guangzhou and Shanghai, also bound for Harbin.
The flight from Tokyo to Harbin, operated by a Boeing 737, was fully loaded.
This aircraft is a business class and economy class model, with a passenger capacity of 149.
Before 1986, the Boeing 737's engines had not been upgraded, so the fuselage could not be lengthened, and the passenger capacity was 149.
After 1986, passenger seating was increased to 168 people.
A total of 149 tickets were sold. To be honest, Northern Airlines was quite surprised when they learned of this.
Many flights for the next few days have also been sold out.
Although this May event is supposed to be a grand gathering for the mathematics community, it seems that a lot of people have come to Harbin instead.
In fact, it does.
Many Tokyo locals, not just university professors, but also many ordinary wealthy people, were quite surprised after reading the newspapers that such a world-class mathematician had emerged from the Ice City.
On the other hand, companies like Nintendo had previously set up factories in Harbin, and most importantly, Dolphin Games' headquarters are located in Harbin.
There are also a series of products such as PHS phones, and many people have paid attention to this information, knowing that these big companies are all in Harbin.
It's quite intriguing that a country that has only been reforming and opening up for a few years has managed to create so many high-tech companies.
It was this curiosity, coupled with the conference in May, that led everyone to impulsively buy plane tickets and head to Harbin.
However, while these people were buying plane tickets to Harbin, Wang Duoyu went into hiding.
May 1st is International Workers' Day, and on that day he took the kids to the Harbin Zoo.
Previously in Beijing, Wang Junhong had seen African animals such as lions and giraffes. Later, when Wang Duoyu contacted Tong Jianwei, Kang Yumin, Zhao Guobin and others, he mentioned the matter of Harbin Zoo introducing foreign wild animals.
Although the climate and environment in Harbin are certainly not suitable for the survival of lions and other foreign wild animals, it is a zoo after all, so it certainly doesn't consider that much.
Attracting tourists is the most important thing.
Anyway, there are just too many animals like lions and giraffes on the African continent.
Humans and cattle work so hard, can't these animals work a little harder?
Otherwise, if you want to see lions and other African animals in China, you can't just go to the south or Beijing, right?
Wang Duoyu spent a day showing the kids the animals, and then he went into hiding.
He won't show up before the report meeting starts, because there are too many guests and he can't handle them all, so he might as well hide and not bother him.
After he put up the sign that he was in seclusion, no one came to bother him.
How peaceful!
In early March, after Wang Duoyu completed the proof of the infinite-dimensional partial differential equation, he began to study the hyperplane conjecture in Banach space.
In fact, he had discovered a Banach space that was completely asymmetric much earlier, but Wang Duoyu did not have time to make inferences at the time, because this required combining combinatorial mathematics and other methods to make inferences.
Banach space is an important concept in mathematics. It refers to a complete normed linear space, that is, a linear space with norm and metric completeness.
This also means that in this space, any Cauchy sequence has a limit, and that limit also exists in this space.
In simple terms, Banach space studies a mixture of linear algebra and analysis.
A C*-algebra is a Banach algebra with involution, and involution is a function that makes every element z correspond to another element x*.
A fundamental example of C*-algebras is the algebra B(H) defined on all continuous mappings T on the Hilbert space H.
Hilbert space is a complete inner product space, that is, a vector space with inner product operations, in which all Cauchy sequences converge to a vector in the space.
Specifically, the Hilbert space is a vector space of real or complex numbers, in which an inner product operation is defined, namely a bilinear function that satisfies linearity, symmetry, and positive definiteness.
Vectors in Hilbert space can be finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional, with the infinite-dimensional case being more important and interesting.
In February and March, Wang Duoyu was researching partial differential equations of infinite dimensions. In mid-to-late March, he began to study Banach space.
These theories, mathematical tools, and methods are all somewhat related, which is why he conducted his research in this order.
Among them, there are some earlier conjectures about Banach spaces, such as whether each Banach space has a certain property.
Before Wang Duoyu discovered the Banach space, which is completely devoid of symmetry, he was unaware that this hyperplane conjecture, known as the 'ancient conjecture,' actually had a counterexample.
However, it took Wang Duoyu nearly a month to finally create a series of structures in Banach space that were completely asymmetric, thus solving the infamous Banach hyperplane problem and proposing Wang's dichotomy theorem.
In addition, he also needs to connect functional analysis with combinatorics and other fields to thoroughly improve this part of the content.
After completing this part of the paper, Wang Duoyu finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Recently, he wrote the paper and then put the 439-page paper into a metal box.
So far, he has proven but not published three mathematical research results: infinite-dimensional partial differential equations, the Banach hyperplane problem, and the Collatz conjecture.
The latter is arguably the most frustrating, having been proven by Wang Duoyu for over three years, yet still not published.
Judging from the current situation, Wang Duoyu will definitely keep it hidden until after 1986 before publishing it.
On Sunday, May 5th, Wang Duoyu finally emerged from seclusion.
If we give everyone an extra four days and they still haven't left the border, then we'll really have to come knocking on their door.
That evening, Wang Duoyu returned home an hour and a half earlier than usual.
When they arrived home, the two brothers, Wang Junhong and Wang Junan, were both very surprised.
"Dad, you got off work so early today! Are you done with work? Can you play with us for a while?"
Wang Duoyu did not refuse the requests made by the two children.
Because he had already refused many times before, Wang Junhong and the others were still a little hesitant to bother him.
Where are your sister and the others?
While spending time with the two little ones, Wang Duoyu casually asked a question, but unexpectedly Wang Junhong said that the two little aunts had returned.
Ok?
Wang Duoyu was taken aback. Was it Sunday today?
The hectic pace of life had made Wang Duoyu feel somewhat isolated from the world.
The Wang sisters didn't come back during the May Day holiday; instead, they only returned today.
But today is Sunday.
never mind!
Not long after, the Wang sisters, Meili and Meihe, arrived with their children, Li Rongrong and Lu Yuening.
They didn't bring their children over to ask Liu Xiaoli to help take care of them; instead, they came to Wang Duoyu to discuss something.
"Brother, I have something to tell you, we're pregnant again."
Wang Duoyu: “.”
Although he knew that his two younger sisters would definitely cause trouble after going abroad, especially during the Spring Festival when they returned to Lu Qingsong and Li Yuanchao's hometowns respectively.
It is well known that in rural areas of this era, or even in rural areas of any era, the idea of valuing sons over daughters always exists.
Regardless of family planning policies, having only one child is simply not suitable for rural families. Most importantly, Wang Meili and the others can go to work in Tokyo, and Lu Qingsong and Li Yuanchao can go with them—isn't that perfect?
So now that she's pregnant, it seems perfectly logical, right?
Wang Duoyu hadn't expected them to be so fast; it was practically lightning speed.
"Congratulations!"
After a moment of surprise, Wang Duoyu smiled and said:
"But it's okay that you're pregnant. You can still fly before 28 weeks, but it's best not to fly back and forth every week. You can take Rongrong and Xiaoning there for half a month, and then send them back for half a month."
"Around the 28th week, you should come back here to rest and prepare for your pregnancy. You can leave things over there to Xiao Lu and Xiao Li."
Upon hearing this, the two sisters' faces immediately fell.
They thought that once they got pregnant, their Ninth Brother wouldn't need them to work so hard anymore.
But they forgot the saying, "Money is hard to earn, and life is hard to endure."
Wanting to make money on one hand and wanting to be idle on the other—there's no such thing as a free lunch!
The two sisters had no way to resist, and besides, it had only been a few weeks, yet they couldn't wait to stay at home to rest and prepare for childbirth.
Even if they could stay at home, Wang Duoyu was afraid that family planning officials would come to their house.
Wouldn't they have to hide then?
So, instead of doing this, I might as well go work in Tokyo.
"Brother, when it comes time to give birth, how about we give birth in Tokyo?"
"I'm happy as long as you're happy, but try to come back here after the full moon."
After a pause, Wang Duoyu continued:
"You two are only five and a half weeks along now, and eight weeks along, so by September you'll barely be twenty-eight weeks along."
Around September, the Plaza Accord should be signed soon.
In the original timeline, the Plaza Accord was signed on September 22nd.
So at this point in time, whether the two sisters stay in Tokyo or not is not very important.
Of course, if it's for having children, it's better to stay in Tokyo, because there's a family planning office in Harbin.
On the other hand, if they stay in Tokyo, then there will be no one to take care of them.
If all else fails, we'll send two people from our hometown to take care of the two sisters.
But if the two sisters were to pay for it, I'm afraid they would feel the pinch.
After all, they don't earn much money and are greedy, so they probably wouldn't be too happy.
We'll talk about that later; there's no rush now.
The very next day, Wang Duoyu met several big shots in his office in the mathematics department's teaching building.
For example, Gelfand, Andrei Weil, and Lev Pontryagin.
Many people should be familiar with Gelfand. In Wang Duoyu's research on Banach spaces, it was Gelfand who established the theory of normative rings, namely the theory of commutative Banach algebras.
In addition to his research in harmonic analysis, group representation theory, and integral geometry, Gelfand was a very accomplished mathematician from the Russian Empire.
Gelfand has given presentations at previous International Congresses of Mathematicians.
As for Lev Pontryagin, his main research was on the duality theory of homology, namely Pontryagin duality, and the fundamental problems of the theory of collateralization in topology.
Chen Xingshen, Sergei Novikov, John Milnor, Wu Wenjun, and others have all conducted research on whether the Pontryagin class of rational numbers is a topological invariant in topology.
This also demonstrates Lev Pontryagin's stature in mathematics.
However, what Wang Duoyu didn't quite understand was why Lev Pontryagin, this blind mathematician, had come to Harbin.
Moreover, this big shot is already seventy-seven years old this year, which is still quite young.
After some conversation, Wang Duoyu learned that Lev Pontryagin just wanted to come and "see" Wang Duoyu, the mathematician.
"Thank you!"
Wang Duoyu didn't know what else to say besides thank you.
Although this pioneer in the field of mathematics lost his sight at the age of fourteen, he did not lose hope in life. Instead, he went very far in mathematics and achieved very high scientific research results.
And he's already 77 years old, and he's still a fan of celebrities.
It could be considered a case of idol worship, since he came to Harbin purely to see Wang Duoyu. Although he couldn't see Wang Duoyu, he could feel his presence.
Seeing such a long-time 'fan,' Wang Duoyu almost pulled out his paper proving the Banach hyperplane conjecture.
It's not appropriate to take it out anymore, because it might really trigger a lot of people's sensitive nerves.
For the rest of the day, Wang Duoyu did nothing but chat with his senior colleagues, such as Gelfand, in the office.
There were quite a few people there, all of whom were senior figures in the field of mathematics.
Two years ago, in 1983, there weren't many mathematicians from the Arctic Bear Empire, especially the old guys like Gelfand.
For example, Andrei Weil, who was seventy-nine years old.
These people are contemporaries of Hua Luogeng, Chen Xingshen, Duan Xuefu, and others. After all, Duan Xuefu is already seventy-one years old this year.
Jiangshan has talented people on behalf of the people, and they have been leading the way for hundreds of years.
This era belongs to people like Wang Duoyu. Even for figures like Smail, John Milnor, and Daniel Gray, it's no longer their era.
The very next day, May 7th, at the Harbin Institute of Technology campus, the auditorium, which can accommodate 3,000 people, had already attracted a considerable number of people by around 8 a.m.
There were so many people attending Wang Duoyu's math lecture that even math students on campus could only attend if they had good grades.
For example, freshmen's grades are based on last year's final exam results.
If your score isn't high enough, you're basically ineligible to participate.
Not all gifted students can participate in gifted classes or experimental classes.
There are clearly three thousand seats, so why aren't they enough?
Because of its high standards and the large number of attendees.
More than 800 people came from domestic universities and research institutions alone, and that was only because of the restrictions; otherwise, there would have been many more.
There are many good universities in China, such as Peking University, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, and University of Science and Technology of China, but they are not well-known internationally.
Well, actually there aren't that many top mathematicians in China, so it's not very prominent internationally.
In China, besides Qian Xuesen, there are also other super brains like Yu Min. These people are not talents who specialize in mathematical theory research; otherwise, they would definitely be world-class top mathematicians.
Two thousand mathematics professors, researchers, and doctoral candidates from abroad were invited by Harbin Institute of Technology.
There were countless people who came without invitation, such as Lev Pontryagin, who came uninvited.
Anyway, a lot of people have come to Harbin Institute of Technology in the past few days.
They all wanted to attend the presentation, but unfortunately, they couldn't.
Therefore, the only way to conduct a live video report was to use the television station's live broadcast method in the lobby of the hotel outside Harbin Institute of Technology, which was located in the conference hall.
Math enthusiasts who wish to participate are welcome to register.
At 8:30, Wang Duoyu learned from Lü Gongliang in his office in the mathematics department building that more than 4,300 people had registered to watch his lecture live in the conference halls of two hotels off campus.
While it's certainly not as good as being there in person, being able to watch the live stream is already pretty good.
Harbin Institute of Technology has set up several large screens. Although they are not high-tech, they are still quite impressive.
"so many people?"
After hearing this, Wang Duoyu was completely stunned.
Lü Gongliang, however, smiled and said:
"Duoyu, it seems even you don't believe you have so many fans, haha, you're practically a celebrity now, and the hottest celebrity in the mathematics world at that."
If it were before, Wang Duoyu definitely wouldn't have believed Lü Gongliang's nonsense.
But with a 77-year-old super-aged 'fan' like Lev Pontryagin showing up, what else could Wang Duoyu not believe?
There were 3,000 people listening to the report in the auditorium, but I didn't expect there to be more than 4,000 people in the conference hall of the hotel outside the school. Wow, that's really too exaggerated.
But this did happen. It's a bit outrageous, but could they really understand it?
Why did Wang Duoyu restrict the number of people who came to listen to the report?
Mathematics requires talent; many people only have a superficial understanding of high school mathematics, while university mathematics is completely different from high school mathematics.
High school mathematics focuses on consolidating basic knowledge and training application skills.
However, university mathematics places greater emphasis on the construction of theoretical systems and the cultivation of abstract thinking. Therefore, university mathematics is not merely a simple continuation of high school knowledge, but rather a deepening and expansion on that basis.
Take calculus as an example. High school mathematics only teaches the concept of derivatives and simple differentiation rules, but in university calculus courses, you will learn more complex differentiation techniques, differential equations, series, and so on.
However, university mathematics is already this difficult, so Wang Duoyu's lecture will be even more difficult.
It is worth noting that Wang Duoyu's main topics in this conference were the fundamental lemma of automorphic forms in the Langlands program and the third, fourth and fifth papers on the geometric Langlands conjecture, as well as the paper on the proof of the approximate solution of the third-order equation in complex dynamical systems and the 372-page paper on the proof of the reciprocity law conjecture, which were published in the last six months.
Let alone ordinary people, even those university undergraduates are just there to make up the numbers. In Wang Duoyu's opinion, the number of people who can actually understand these papers is probably only around a thousand.
Regardless of whether these people can understand it or not, since they want to watch the live stream, let them watch it.
Wang Duoyu was surprised, but although he couldn't understand it, he accepted it.
He wouldn't try to persuade them, because he knew he couldn't, so he'd just let them be happy.
So the matter was settled.
At 8:55, Wang Duoyu appeared in the auditorium on time. After waiting for a while, at 9:00, he appeared on the stage on time after being introduced by the host.
The auditorium, which can hold over three thousand people, was completely full.
"There are many people here today, as you can all see. Thank you all for coming to listen to my presentation."
On the podium, Wang Duoyu smiled and spoke eloquently:
"Normally when I give a report, I don't talk nonsense, but today is a little different because in addition to the audience here, there are more than 4,000 people watching my report in the hotel outside our school."
"To be honest, I appreciate that you enjoyed my presentation, but frankly, a large portion of you will likely not understand what I'm about to say, so I don't want to waste your time."
"Of course, if you're willing to waste your time, that's your business. I'm just offering a word of advice, nothing more."
Upon hearing Wang Duoyu's words, everyone in the auditorium was taken aback.
Especially the old guys like Gelfand were all very shocked. How could this be possible?
Inside the auditorium, there were quite a few foreigners, most of whom had arrived in Harbin by plane, so they all knew that Harbin Yanjiagang Airport had been quite busy lately.
The area outside Harbin Institute of Technology is exceptionally busy, especially the security office at the school gate, which is under great tension.
In order to protect Wang Duoyu, Yan Daowen dispatched two more teams from nearby troops to provide assistance and support.
Gelfand and the others assumed that these people were just there to join in the fun, after all, Harbin Institute of Technology has a certain reputation abroad.
Harbin Institute of Technology has quite a few large affiliated companies, such as Dolphin Games and Huaxin Company.
To everyone's surprise, these people actually came to the conference hall of a hotel outside Harbin Institute of Technology to listen to a report.
Goodness, no wonder there were so many cameras and microphones in the auditorium. It turns out this wasn't just for news reporting, but a real live broadcast.
What a great experience.
Many gifted students from Harbin Institute of Technology's gifted classes and experimental classes were shocked when they heard this.
The professors and PhDs from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and other universities were all speechless, unable to process what they had just witnessed. It was utterly outrageous, ridiculously absurd.
To make matters worse, Wang Duoyu actually said that in front of the camera. I wonder what the audience in the hotel was thinking at that moment.
Because Wang Duoyu was basically pointing at the camera and saying: Hey, you guys are all noobs, if you don't understand, don't listen. You might as well go home and daydream.
Every human being has dignity, and Wang Duoyu's actions were truly inappropriate.
But would Wang Duoyu care about any of that?
Clearly, he doesn't care what these people think.
Just like before, he would directly arrange exams, and only those who passed the exams were qualified to attend the classes.
Even to listen to his lectures, you need to be qualified. You should know that he breaks down and mashes the material to feed these students, but you still need to be qualified.
For a presentation, brevity is key; it should be even more concise than the paper itself, highlighting only the parts that require in-depth analysis, while glossing over the rest.
In that case, listening to his report is, frankly, a waste of time.
Therefore, Wang Duoyu is straightforward and never beats around the bush, and the teachers and students at Harbin Institute of Technology are used to it.
In the conference hall of the hotel off the Harbin Institute of Technology campus, some people were indeed very angry after hearing this.
But no one left, because Wang Duoyu changed the subject abruptly, giving everyone no time to react, and immediately continued:
"Okay, without further ado, let me give you a brief introduction."
"This lecture will last for two days. Today we will begin with the third, fourth and fifth proof papers of the geometric Langlands conjecture. I have already discussed the first and second papers before, so I will not go into detail."
"This afternoon I will talk about the fundamental lemma of automorphic forms in the Langlands program. Tomorrow morning I will present a paper on the proof of the reciprocity law conjecture, and tomorrow afternoon I will present a paper on the proof of complex dynamical systems with approximate solutions to third-order equations."
That concludes the main points of the report. Now, our report will officially begin.
The report meeting officially began, and most people listened attentively.
But when Wang Duoyu opened his mouth, many of the so-called "amateur scientists," or math enthusiasts, at the off-campus hotel were dumbfounded.
There are indeed many math enthusiasts around the world, and amateur scientists are a major group among them.
Thanks to John Stilwell, Wang Duoyu, a top mathematician in the field, has broken into the mainstream.
Two years ago, Wang Duoyu won the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians. To many amateur scientists, this was like "ascending the throne," and the pure gold Fields Medal medal was the crown.
In fact, in the mainstream mathematics community's view, Wang Duoyu is already the emperor of mathematics, and he doesn't need the Fields Medal to make him stand out.
It's worth noting that Alexander Grothendieck didn't go to Moscow to receive the Fields Medal back then, but did that affect his status in mathematics?
Even if Wang Duoyu went to Warsaw to receive the award, it would definitely be the Fields Medal, which would increase the value of the medal.
This also shows that Wang Duoyu recognizes the mainstream mathematics community.
Originally, these were all just matters within the small circle of mathematics, but after breaking out of that circle, many amateur mathematics enthusiasts have started to pay attention to Wang Duoyu.
And it can be said that the reason why the number of subscribers to the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal has continued to exceed three thousand, five thousand, or even ten thousand over the years is actually due to the sales contributed by these amateur mathematics enthusiasts.
However, amateur science enthusiasts vary greatly in quality, and those who dare to attend Wang Duoyu's lectures have a pilgrimage mentality.
But now that I've heard it, I'm completely dumbfounded.
P.S.: There are only forty-odd votes left. Please help me cast my monthly vote. Thank you everyone!
