Chapter 995 The Endless Family and Morpheus
Dreams are a key concept in the DC Universe and an important component of it.
Dreams represent illusion and all things unreal, and for this very reason, dreams become the foundation of reality; the two are interdependent and neither can exist without the other.
It is precisely because of its importance that dreams have a physical manifestation in the DC Universe: the man before Yang Le, a wild and unrestrained man who resembles Robert Smith, the lead singer of the British band The Cure.
This 'man' is named Morpheus. He is the master of this dream world and the embodiment of all dreams in the DC Universe. He can control all sleep, sweet dreams, and nightmares. If you always have insomnia, it might be him teasing you.
Morpheus is also a member of the DC Infinity Family, which has seven members in total. Although some members may be replaced, there can usually only be seven members at the same time.
The seven members are the eldest brother's fate, the second sister's death, the third brother's dream, the fourth brother's destruction, the fifth brother's androgynous desire, the sixth sister's despair, and the youngest seventh sister's delirium.
Each of these seven represents a supreme concept in the DC Universe. Apart from the very special case of death, the others are basically of equal importance and the loss of any one of them would cause great chaos in the universe.
Oh, right, there's another one who's rather special, and that's Destruction. He's the only member of the Endless Family who relinquished his duties while still alive, but because he hasn't died yet, there's no new successor.
Destruction is probably the easiest person to communicate with in the Endless Family besides Death. Compared to his brothers and sisters who are either divine, insane, or dark, the long period of being relieved of his duties has given him a bit more humanity. Whether you are a human, a god, or a demon, Destruction can say a few words to you.
If Yang Le had the choice to deal with one of the members of the Endless Family, he would probably choose Destruction. This tall man with red hair and a full beard had a sense of humor that belied his appearance.
As for why not choose another death that is easier to communicate with, it's because generally you can only witness death twice: once when you are born and once when you die.
This is also the truth about the Endless Family; they not only bear the responsibilities represented by their names, but also the other side of those responsibilities.
Morpheus embodies both the dream and reality aspects of the universe, and he even possesses the powerful ability to reshape the DC Universe.
Yang Le was somewhat frustrated. He had completely forgotten how important the concept of dreams was in the DC Universe, and it wasn't until he saw Morpheus that he remembered it.
If he could, he wouldn't really want to run into Morpheus; within the Endless Family, Morpheus was considered one of the more difficult types to approach.
Morpheus is extremely self-centered. No matter what he does, he only considers his own perspective and never thinks about anyone else.
For example, there was once a woman named Nada who fell in love with Morpheus. However, marriage to a member of the Infinity Family was forbidden, so Nada was punished by the gods, which led to the destruction of her country. Nada was plunged into endless torment and eventually chose to commit suicide.
Knowing all this, Morpheus felt no sorrow for Nada's passing or shame for his inaction. Instead, he believed that Nada had abandoned him. In his rage, Morpheus took Nada away from her rightful death and imprisoned her in Hell for ten thousand years.
It seems that Morpheus lacked humanity and the ability to think from other people's perspectives. However, all of this changed after he was imprisoned by a human mage for decades, and he became a little better than before.
However, despite saying that, Morpheus still looked down on ordinary humans. Moreover, Morpheus took his responsibilities very seriously. He was almost the most dutiful member of the entire Endless Family, except for the one who died at the beginning.
Therefore, Yang Le feared that Morpheus would think he was stealing his power, just like Doctor Schick.
Surprisingly, Morpheus didn't seem to be as aggressive as he was with Doctor Schicksal. Instead, his dark eyes were filled with curiosity; he was intrigued by the creature before him. "What a wondrous creation. You're like an incomplete version of myself. I almost thought you were one of my incarnations."
As he spoke, Morpheus had already arrived in front of the Dust Fairy. He looked the little fairy in front of him up and down, who seemed to be very common in the illusory world. Not only in his tone, but also in his expression, there was not a trace of anger.
"Greetings, Lord of Dreams." Yang Le greeted him respectfully. "Although I don't look like one, I am indeed a genuine human being."
"Humans? That's quite interesting." Morpheus said with great interest. "Over the years, I've seen many humans who are interested in dreams, but most of them obtain the power of dreams by stealing them."
"I've never seen a human being like you, who seems to originate from the same source as dreams, since I was born."
Morpheus snapped his fingers, and the previously illusory space began to change, with real, meaningful things slowly appearing around him.
The world was divided into black and white. A round moon, like a plate, hung in the dark night sky, surrounded by white dots that looked as if they had been flicked on with a paintbrush.
Yang Le was surprised to find that even Morpheus in front of him had become composed of black and white. Looking down at his own body, he realized that he had also become like Morpheus.
"Come with me." Morpheus's tone was absolute, but strangely enough, Yang Le could also detect a hint of pleading in it.
Following behind, flapping its wings, one a god and the other a spirit, they traveled along the pure white path.
"Just call me Morpheus."
While Yang Le was thinking about how to start a conversation, Morpheus broke the silence first. He was too approachable, which made Yang Le wonder if the comics he had read before were fake.
"You can also call me Yang Le."
"You treat me with respect, and I'll treat you with even more respect"—that's Yang Le's attitude towards life. However, he really couldn't understand why Morpheus was treating him so well, so he naturally asked him about it.
Morpheus lightly touched the Dust Fairy's skirt, and Yang Le was surprised to find a glittering gold card hidden in his pocket, the very one God had given him.
"I remember this thing should be on the main body, right?" Yang Le pulled out the card, which was the only color in this world besides black and white.
“This was given to you by God, so anyone can take it out,” Morpheus said matter-of-factly.
"But that's not enough to get me to come out and see you. What really intrigues me is your connection to dreams."
