Chapter 6: Close the Distance
Chapter 6: Close the Distance
He took Peter to a nearby eyewear store to get a pair of glasses. While waiting for the glasses to be ready, Yang Le took Peter and Gwen to a fast food restaurant not far from the eyewear store.
Yang Le ordered three signature hamburger sets without thinking, not giving Peter and Gwen any chance to refuse.
"Thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Yang Le." Peter thanked Yang Le stiffly, but Gwen just said thank you coolly.
"Peter, I just said that we are friends. In China, it is normal for friends to treat each other to a meal. Your serious look makes me feel that you don't consider me a friend at all."
Yang Le looked at Peter helplessly, and Gwen beside him was also speechless.
"I didn't mean that. It's just that I feel like everything happened too fast and I haven't adapted yet..." Peter explained hurriedly. He spoke so fast that he swallowed some words. If it weren't for the Omnitrix's translation function, he might not have understood what Peter said. Oh, no, he wouldn't have understood without the translation.
"Oh Peter, what are you talking about?" Just because Yang Le could understand didn't mean others could. Gwen looked at Peter speechlessly.
Peter blushed when he heard Gwen's complaints. In fact, he really wanted to make friends with Yang Le. After all, Yang Le saved him and Gwen, and paid for his glasses.
However, Yang Le helped him so much that it only increased his psychological burden. He felt that Yang Le was his benefactor, which led him to always unconsciously use honorifics for him. He was afraid that his recklessness would make him lose Yang Le, his hard-earned friend.
"Yang Le, is it right for me to shout like that?" Looking at her autistic friend, Gwen quickly changed the subject. The awkwardness in the air could be felt even at the next table.
"Yes, that's right. Yang is my surname and Le is my given name. The pronunciation of Chinese is indeed a little difficult for foreigners who meet me for the first time. You can just call me Yang." In fact, Gwen's pronunciation is still a little strange, but Yang Le doesn't care. It can be casual among friends. As long as it's not too outrageous, he can just call himself by his name.
"Up? Itchy?" Gwen murmured, scratching her hair. "It feels a lot different than what I told you. By the way, does your name have any meaning?"
Meaning? This question surprised Yang Le. No one had ever asked him the meaning of his name since he was a child. The meaning of this name is obvious to everyone in China.
"Well, the word 'le' means happiness in Chinese. I guess my parents want me to be happy, right?" Yang Le was also a little unsure. After all, he had never asked.
"Happy, then I will call you Hobby from now on." After listening to Yang Le's explanation, Gwen immediately decided on Yang Le's nickname.
"Then I'm just a harpy?" Yang Le frowned at the nickname, but looking at Gwen's twinkling watery eyes, his heart softened. Thinking that no one in America would understand, he nodded in agreement.
"OK, I think this nickname can make someone who is not good at speaking feel more comfortable." Gwen's words were suggestive, but everyone present knew that someone was Peter.
"I, I think our set meal should be ready. I'll go get it." Peter felt that he should calm down and offered to leave for a while to get the food.
"Peter may not be able to carry the three-person meal, so I'll go help him. You just wait here, Honey." After saying that, Gwen followed Peter who was leaving, not giving Yang Le any chance to refuse.
Gwen looked at Peter who was queuing for food, walked over and patted him on the shoulder. Peter stiffened when his shoulder was patted, then relaxed after realizing it was Gwen.
"Please, don't scare me Gwen," Peter grumbled quietly.
"Peter, you are too reserved. You are embarrassing the harpy." Gwen looked at Peter with disappointment.
"I know, but I just don't know how to start. You have to help me Gwen." Peter asked for help.
"It's not that complicated. Harpy is not the kind of person who cares about trivial matters. You just need to be casual and show your usual level, Mr. Stuffy." After receiving the instructions, Peter calmed down and returned to his seat with Gwen carrying the dinner tray.
"Sorry, Happy. Peter and I didn't know what you like to drink, so we chose Coke for you." Gwen explained embarrassedly, and then handed over Yang Le's meal.
"It's okay. I like Coke the most. Coke is one of the greatest inventions." Yang Le raised his hands and made a long live gesture before taking the set meal.
"The Coke must be ice cold," Peter said softly.
"Yes, yes, yes. Coke that is not iced is just like Captain America without a shield. His strength is greatly reduced." Yang Le said in agreement.
"Oh, Habby, if you had said this decades ago, you might have gotten a beating." Peter reminded Yang Le after hearing his analogy. After all, Captain America is an idol for many people, but it's been too long, and most young people today are not very enthusiastic about him.
After hearing what Peter said, Yang Le just laughed and took a sip of Coke, not caring at all.
Suddenly, Yang Le seemed to notice something, put down the Coke and looked at Peter.
"What did you call me just now?" Yang Le looked at Peter seriously and said.
"Uh, harpy..." Peter was startled by Yang Le's sudden seriousness. "Of course, if you don't want me to call you that..."
"That's right!" Yang Le interrupted Peter before he could finish, standing up and patting him on the shoulder. "Friends should be more casual. I was so embarrassed just now, brother."
Gwen looked at Peter with satisfaction, feeling as if she had seen her child grow up.
Encouraged, Peter gradually put aside his worries and started chatting with Yang Le. Gwen also said a few words about the facts, and the atmosphere between the three of them became better and better.
Soon the three of them finished their fast food, looked at the time, and thought that it was time to get their glasses, so they set off to the eyewear store.
Sure enough, as soon as they arrived at the store, the clerk took Peter to adjust the glasses that had been fitted. After confirming that there was no problem, the three of them left the store.
"It's getting late, let me take you home." Yang Le suggested after looking at the time.
"Are you okay? Happy, you won't get scolded for coming home too late, right?" Gwen asked worriedly.
"Yeah, this place is not far from Gwen and me's home, we can go back by ourselves." Peter also felt that he should not trouble Yang Le anymore.
"It's okay. I'm older than you, so it's my duty to send you back," Yang Le waved his hand nonchalantly. "Besides, it's okay if I go back late. I don't have any family in this world anyway."
Peter and Gwen were stunned when they heard Yang Le's words, and for a moment they didn't know how to start.
"I'm sorry, Harpy." Gwen's voice trembled, and her watery eyes looked at Yang Le with apology.
