Chapter 24 Mission: 053 Dante
Chapter 24 Mission: 05-3 Dante
More than ten hours ago, at 8pm local time, it was drizzling at Devil May Cry studio.
The lights here had been turned off early. The light from the street lamp outside shone through the narrow window, and I could vaguely see a person with his legs crossed on the table, motionless, as if he had fallen asleep.
As the landline phone rang, the man sleeping on the chair raised his hand with difficulty, threw the magazine covering his face aside, kicked the empty pizza box on the table, hooked his toes, and kicked the microphone into his hand.
"Devil May Cry~"
The man spoke into the microphone in a frivolous tone.
He was a mercenary who made a living by taking on demon-hunting jobs, and was arguably the best demon hunter on the planet. Unfortunately, he was quite lazy, always waiting until he was practically broke to take on another assignment unless he saw one he liked.
In addition, this person's appearance fee is commensurate with his ability, which means that although the firm is well-known, not many people will look for him for non-important and difficult jobs.
"Oh Dante, you're not sleeping again, are you? What time is it over there?"
The voice on the other end of the line belonged to someone the man was very familiar with, speaking in a tone almost like an old woman. He squinted at the clock on the opposite wall, straightened his body slightly—but still kept his legs together—and asked, "Tracy? I'm the one asking, isn't it still early morning over there?"
"Yeah. I'm very busy here."
Tracy's distorted voice came from the other side of the microphone: "But I found something on this island that you're sure to find interesting. Want to know?"
"Me?" Dante laughed. "Let me guess. What's another conspiracy to rule the world? And there's a poor little beauty caught up in it?"
"In a way, you're right."
Dante relaxed. "Come on, Trish. Things like this..."
"Don't hang up yet." Tracy, who knew Dante's character well, said with a smile, "I sent something to your fax machine. You might want to take a look first."
"fax?"
He couldn't quite understand why Tracy was taking this matter so seriously. Dante put down the phone, got off the mahogany chair, and groped in the dark to turn on the fax machine in the corner of the room, watching it slowly spit out a piece of paper.
Then he took the paper and walked out into the light by the window.
His expression turned a little strange.
He turned back and turned on the light, then returned to the table, leaned over it and picked up the microphone: "What is this?"
Tracy asked back, "What do you think it is?"
Dante turned the black-and-white photo printed out by the fax machine in his hand and said, "Your latest selfie? Honestly, it's a bit over-Photoshopped."
"Anything else you think?"
"You are not suitable for this kind of pretending to be young..."
Halfway through his words, Dante's brows furrowed more and more.
He suddenly remembered that Tracy had disguised herself in order to infiltrate a certain organization on the island. She probably didn't look the same now.
Moreover, the chest of this person in the photo looks like...
"Hey, Tracy." His voice became deeper.
"Ok?"
"Tell me this is you."
"What if I say no?"
"Damn it!"
Dante angrily clenched the photo in his hand, and the excessive force caused the edge of the paper to tear: "These bastards-"
"Don't rush to judge, just hear me out."
Dante took a deep breath and exhaled slowly: "You say."
"I just found out about this today. The Yama Blade is on this island."
"I'm going to book a flight."
Dante said decisively. Tracy sighed helplessly: "Please, let me finish first."
"Anything else?" Dante asked in surprise.
"The beautiful girl in the photo resonates with the Yama Blade."
In an instant, Dante froze in place as if petrified.
"I've inquired. The Yama Blade that was stranded on this island is in shattered form. It cannot be repaired, and no one can make it work. Until she sees the Yama Blade."
The petrification was lifted. Dante gently placed the photo on the table and then spoke: "Have you seen her?"
Tracy replied as a matter of course: "I took the photo."
Hearing this, Dante reached out and lifted his hair from his forehead. "I guess so. After all, that dress is yours too."
He waited a moment, then asked again, "So...what do you think?"
"It's probably what you guessed."
"call."
Dante shook his head, his tone slightly more relaxed. "It seems that guy is more humane than we thought."
"You could just say 'romantic'." Tracy laughed, "Our little beauty came from an orphanage."
"Oh! That's too bad."
After laughing twice, Dante said, "I'm going to go right over. Do you have anything else to say?"
"The point you'd care about is gone. No, wait."
"Ok?"
"You may not have noticed, but I took a few of these cute things from you, and now they've stuffed them into the Demon World Gate."
"..." Dante's expression was a little hard to describe for a moment. But the man opposite him was his old partner after all, so he couldn't say anything when he wanted to take something away. "Well, okay. But you said the gate to the demon world?"
"It's a fake. But it can indeed connect to the demon world. It really does exist, but as you know, it can't be activated."
"I see. What else?"
"The Spartan Blade is in the hands of their Pope."
"...Are you serious?"
Tracy's tone was calm: "I have to know what they want to do, right?"
"Well, that's all right. It's easy enough to get back anyway. What do they want with it?"
"Ah, that brings us back to that beautiful girl," Tracy said teasingly. "She brought me the final piece of information—this group calling themselves the 'Sword Cult' used demonic power to create a powerful... something called the 'Savior.'"
Dante sighed and lamented, "Is there nothing new about these villains in the world?"
"Who says it isn't? But what's interesting is that the Devil Sword Cult's god is Sparta, and the core of the savior also needs someone with Spartan blood."
"That doesn't mean they will never succeed... That's not right."
Dante discovered the blind spot. Speaking of the blood of Sparta——
"You understand, don't you? We are unlucky. There happens to be a person with Spartan blood on this island. Now you should also understand why they need the Spartan sword."
"Then we have to hurry?" Dante left the table and stretched his body.
"That's right. They're only one step away from success. If we don't stop them in time, it could become very troublesome."
"There's no such thing as a tough problem for me. But you're right... I have to hurry."
He hung up the phone, picked up his favorite sword "Rebellion", pushed the door open and walked into the rainy city.
