It turns out that the Alien Queen used a trick called "golden cicada shedding its shell," leaving behind its outer shell while its true form burrowed underground to escape.

It makes sense, considering that Roy's demon form also has wings. Without an advantage in physical attributes, there's no way the Alien Queen could outfly Roy.

So the wings were just a way to make Roy ignore what was happening beneath his feet.
