Chapter 216 The Not-So-Clever Little Snake
"Huh?" The military doctor, who was standing with his hands on his hips and looking smug, was taken aback. Then he turned to look at Lin Xin in disbelief and said angrily, "Nonsense, my little baby was fed this morning."

Lin Xin was just saying it casually, but those scorpions were clearly different from the ones she usually saw. They were pitch black overall, and the barbs on their tails and the two large pincers next to their heads were a bright red, like blood. Their eyes were shiny, and their four slender legs moved very nimbly. If the inside of the jar hadn't been so smooth, they probably would have crawled out and been running all over the place.

"Look," as if to prove himself, Dr. Chu grabbed Lin Xin's arm and dragged her to the jar, pointing to the scorpions inside that had moved over there as he moved, "You still say they don't like you? Look, they're following you!"

Lin Xin looked down in confusion, and even walked to the opposite side of the jar. Sure enough, the scorpions turned their heads to her side again and moved to a different spot.

"It really is!" Lin Xin rubbed her chin and clicked her tongue in amazement, wondering if the scorpions had sensed her special ability and that's why they were behaving this way.

"I knew my judgment was spot on! That kid Kong even wanted to send his nephew to my place. I'm afraid my little darlings will despise that blockhead! Humph!" Doctor Chu said, both smug and disgusted.

Lin Xin was both amused and exasperated. Since she was already here, she might as well raise them! With her wood-type supernatural ability, how could she be afraid of not being able to raise these poisonous creatures? What a joke!

"Um, what do they eat? Do they need water?" Having agreed to it, Lin Xin quickly got into character.

"It's very simple. These leaves are their food. As for water, just give them a little occasionally. Remember not to feed them the wrong kind. I need the poison from their bodies," said Dr. Chu, pointing to the plants on the other side. He also pointed to the notes on each flowerpot, which listed the names of various insects.

Lin Xin looked at the notes on each flowerpot one by one and found that some of them were obviously crooked and the marks on them were still relatively new, which was different from the others.

She became suspicious and asked, "Am I the only one responsible for feeding them, or are there others?"

Speaking of this, Doctor Chu snorted angrily, "There was an idiot here before who raised my precious Xiao Qing to death, but he didn't tell me and secretly buried Xiao Qing instead. I was so angry that I kicked him out. If I hadn't found you, I was planning to raise it myself for a while."

"I see!" Lin Xin understood. She pointed to the flowerpots and said to him, "Then you should take a good look at these plants and see if they match the notes on them! After all, I don't know anything about these things, and I can't take responsibility if I feed them the wrong plants."

Dr. Chu didn't take it seriously, but he did appreciate Lin Xin's meticulous attitude. As he walked over to check, he said, "You little rascal, you're so clever. I put these notes up myself, how could you make a mistake? You too..."

The abruptly stopped sound made Lin Xin look over, and she saw that Doctor Chu's eyes were wide open, and he was trembling all over as he looked at a palm-sized flowerpot in his hand.

"What's wrong, Dr. Chu?" Lin Xin rushed over to support him and asked.

"You beast, you're a beast!" Doctor Chu trembled with rage, his voice shaking as he spoke.

When Lin Xin saw that the flowerpot he was holding was one of the ones she had found problematic, she immediately realized that it must have been done by the person he had mentioned who was kicked out, either out of revenge or to trip up anyone who came after him.

After all, if Dr. Chu were to feed the animals himself, he wouldn't need to look at the notes to choose the plants.

"Don't you need to check if your little one has been fed the wrong thing?" Seeing that he looked like he might faint at any moment, Lin Xin had to use a bit of her supernatural power to stabilize his heart, lest he really get sick from anger. "Yes, yes, you're right, I'll go right now." Upon hearing this, Doctor Chu quickly shook off her hand that was supporting his arm and began to check all the jars, big and small, one by one with great speed.

Since this was her job from now on, Lin Xin didn't hesitate and followed him closely, watching him examine the brightly colored insects as if they were precious treasures.

Lin Xin, who didn't understand, didn't pretend to know and asked all the questions she needed to. After the doctor had checked her over, he breathed a long sigh of relief. "Luckily, he only changed the notepad and didn't feed my little darlings anything random."

"Then you'd better hurry up and change those wrong notes back, so I don't make a mistake later. I won't take responsibility if something goes wrong!" Lin Xin said.

"Hmph, you're so cunning!" Doctor Chu smiled and pointed at her from a distance, scolding her.

Lin Xin pouted and didn't say anything. She was afraid that if she continued to talk, she would hurt him and make him feel worse, and she would have to use her supernatural powers to save him.

Using up her superpowers was a minor matter; with Dr. Chu's nose, which was even more sensitive than a mutated dog's, she would be at a loss if she smelled something else. So she had no choice but to shut up.

The two of them, one teaching and the other learning, sorted out all the messy notes. Lin Xin also gained a basic understanding of the characteristics of these plants, so that even if someone messed up the notes again, she wouldn't feed them the wrong plants.

"Alright, little girl, you're quick to learn, but this old man has an even better eye! Hahaha!" Doctor Chu walked to the tent entrance. "I'll be going now. You stay here and ask me anytime if you have any questions. I'll be right ahead."

"I see."

Doctor Chu left satisfied.

After he walked away, Lin Xin sat down on the ground with a thud. Next to her was a jar about half her height, inside which was a small, colorful snake, only as thick as her little finger and half an arm's length. It had been curled up and sleeping under the jar.

Lin Xin peeked inside and saw that the little snake seemed to have just woken up, its tongue flicking as it stood upright, its tiny black eyes, like sesame seeds, staring at her intently.

If this were an ordinary person, they would probably be terrified. Fortunately, Lin Xin had seen many snakes during the apocalypse. Although most snakes mutated to become huge, there were exceptions. She once saw a small black snake about the same size as the one in front of her, which forced a giant python as thick as a bucket and over ten meters long to retreat step by step.

She also asked the researchers at the institute who specialize in studying mutated animals, and the answer she received was that she was very lucky. Generally speaking, animals and plants that undergo reverse mutation are top-tier species, and encountering one would basically mean certain death.

This little snake has obviously not mutated, but it is definitely not a good one. However, she thinks it looks kind of silly and cute, especially its dull, sesame-seed-like eyes, which don't look very smart.

Lin Xin suddenly felt playful. She condensed a wisp of pure wood-type power into a small ball of pale green light in her palm, and then slowly put her hand into the jar.
