Chapter 315 Twelve Years Ago
When Dumbledore asked her to reveal the truth about what happened twelve years ago, Professor McGonagall was stunned:
“Albus, but…”
"I believe in Sherlock's ability to seek the truth, and I also believe in Harry's ability to accept the facts."
Dumbledore looked at his old partner with gentle eyes and slowly began to speak:
"Besides, I already promised them last time that I would not hide the truth again if necessary."
"Rupert, please don't leave. Stay and listen; I think there are some things you'd like to clarify."
Having said all that, Professor McGonagall naturally understood Dumbledore's insistence.
She looked at the bright-eyed Sherlock and the somewhat bewildered Harry, and slowly began to speak:
"Among all those who sided with the mysterious figure, Sirius Black is someone we never expected..."
"It's not Mysterio, it's Voldemort, my dear Minerva."
Hagrid shuddered.
"Okay, Voldemort..."
Professor McGonagall saw through Dumbledore's insistence and promptly changed her tune.
Hagrid shuddered again.
At this moment, Professor McGonagall seemed to be lost in a distant memory, and after a while, she continued:
“Black’s best friend in school was James Potter, and the two of them were the leaders of that group.”
Both of them were exceptionally intelligent and incredibly talented, but... I've never seen such a mischievous pair of fellows.
“Professor, um... I think you might have forgotten Fred Weasley and George Weasley.”
Hagrid suddenly interjected.
He mainly wanted to get rid of the shadow cast by the name Voldemort and quickly change the subject.
“That’s very true, Professor Hagrid—if they didn’t look so alike, I would sometimes even think they were twins.”
It could be said that James trusted Black more than any of his friends, and this friendship remained unchanged until graduation.
James was the best man at his and Lily's wedding, and later they even made him the godfather of their son…
At this point, Professor McGonagall glanced at Harry.
Professor McGonagall felt a pang of sadness when she saw Harry staring wide-eyed with his mouth agape.
She didn't understand why Dumbledore wanted her to tell Harry about this; for Harry, the blow was simply too much.
But... since Dumbledore had said so, McGonagall steeled herself and continued speaking even faster:
"Twelve years ago, the Wizarding Wars entered their final year—of course, we didn't know that at the time."
As our leader, Albus has always led us in a persistent struggle against Voldemort.
At that moment, he received news that Voldemort was planning to attack James and Lily.
The couple were also key figures in the fight against Voldemort, so Albus immediately advised James and Lily to go into hiding.
At that time, Voldemort had practically taken control of the entire wizarding world, so escaping him was no easy task.
Ultimately, Albus's solution was the Charm of Unwavering Loyalty.
Professor McGonagall paused here, glanced at Hagrid who was clearly uncomfortable because of her repeated mentions of Voldemort, gave him an apologetic look, and then continued:
"This is a very complex spell. It can use magic to hide a secret in the soul of a living person, in which case the secret will never be discovered."
In other words, as long as the person keeping the secret doesn't say anything, even if Voldemort searches the village where James and Lily live for tens of thousands of years, he won't find them, even if his nose is right outside their living room window!
Hearing this, Sherlock and Harry both understood.
Sherlock: "So Sirius Black was Harry's parents' secret agent?"
"This is a matter of course."
Professor McGonagall sighed deeply, glanced at the silent Harry, and continued:
"James told Albus that Black would rather die than reveal where they were."
On the other hand, Blake himself was also preparing to go into hiding.
Even so, Albus was still worried—"I remember you offered to personally act as the Potters' confidant, right?"
The last sentence was naturally addressed to Dumbledore.
Sherlock frowned upon hearing this. "Sir, you already suspected Black back then?"
"That's not the case, or rather, not entirely."
Dumbledore shook his head. "In fact, even before this incident, I had already suspected that one of us had betrayed us."
Because I've discovered more than once that someone from the Order of the Phoenix was reporting Harry's parents' movements to Voldemort.
"The Order of the Phoenix?"
Sherlock instinctively looked toward Fawkes behind Dumbledore.
"Yes, the Order of the Phoenix. It was founded by me as an organization dedicated to fighting against Voldemort."
Although some of these members may not seem like heroes and may appear unassuming, I believe that most of them are brave and fearless.
I will only suggest that I become Harry's father's secret agent when I am certain that there is a traitor in the Order of the Phoenix.
Unfortunately, he insisted on using Blake.
"Unfortunately, the spell of unwavering loyalty was cast for less than a week before Blake betrayed them."
Professor McGonagall picked up where Dumbledore left off, continuing, "I think it was probably because Black grew tired of his double agent role and was ready to openly support Voldemort. However, no one could have imagined that Voldemort would be utterly defeated in front of a baby."
His first attempt failed, and he lost his magic power, becoming extremely weak and forced to flee in a sorry state.
This put Black in a very awkward position—Voldemort fell just as he exposed his traitorous nature.
He had no choice but to leave in the same sorry state as Voldemort.
"That despicable, filthy, shameless traitor!"
Hagrid suddenly roared, his anger even causing him to temporarily forget his fear of Voldemort:
"I found him! I rescued Harry from his house after Lily and James died!"
I had just pulled him out of the rubble when Sirius Black showed up!
"Calm down, Rupert."
Reminded by Dumbledore, Hagrid's emotions calmed down slightly, but he still said angrily:
"He was riding that flying motorcycle and asked me for Harry, saying he was Harry's godfather and would take good care of him!"
Although I didn't know he was the Secret Keeper, Mr. Dumbledore's orders were for me to take Harry to his aunt and uncle's house, so I refused.
I argued with him for a long time before he reluctantly agreed and even gave me the motorcycle, saying he would never need it again.
I should have thought of that back then!
It's clearly its favorite motorcycle, how could it possibly be unusable now?
It's clearly because it's too easy to track!
You all know he's the Secret Service agent, and the Ministry of Magic will issue a warrant for his arrest in a few hours. He deliberately pretended to be a good guy just to trick me!
Damn it, if only I had handed Harry over to him back then…
At this point, Hagrid couldn't help but shudder, even more so than when he heard the others mention the name "Falcon."
Although Hagrid hadn't finished speaking, everyone knew what he was going to say next.
The principal's office fell silent.
"Excuse me, I have a question," Sherlock suddenly spoke up, breaking the silence:
"Professor Hagrid, why didn't Black just snatch Harry from you back then?"
"what!"
Hagrid's beard twitched. "I admit he's a very powerful wizard, but even he can't take Harry away from me!"
"So, it's because of the difference in strength between the two sides..."
Sherlock knew Hagrid was strong, but when he heard that even Black, who was on par with Snape, wasn't confident he could snatch a baby from him, he felt it necessary to reassess his giant friend's strength.
It's important to know that, according to Hagrid, he was unaware of Sirius's betrayal at that time.
In other words, if Blake is confident, he can make a move even when the opponent is not paying attention.
But Blake did not do that.
Either he lacked confidence and felt he couldn't even snatch Harry away in a sneak attack.
Or perhaps he was worried that even after kidnapping Harry, he wouldn't be able to escape the subsequent pursuit.
It's more likely that it's a combination of both.
"The net of Heaven is vast, and though its meshes are wide, nothing escapes it."
Professor McGonagall said, "In any case, by the next day, Black had been arrested by the Ministry of Magic."
"Oh?"
Upon hearing this, Sherlock showed a surprised expression for the first time. "The Ministry of Magic is so efficient?"
Professor McGonagall glanced at Sherlock with a hint of helplessness.
But in fact, his student's contempt for the Ministry of Magic was not wrong at all.
“It wasn’t the Ministry of Magic. The person who found him was Peter Pettigrew—he was another good friend of James and Lily, and he also knew that Black was the Secret Keeper.”
"Peter Pettigrew".
Sherlock read the name aloud.
Yes, it was a chubby little boy.
At school, he idolized Blake and James like heroes.
Compared to the rest of the team, he always followed them around like a shadow.
Of course, his talent cannot be compared with others, so I have always been very strict with him.
Even now, when I think about it, I can't help but feel waves of regret..."
At this point, Professor McGonagall's voice lowered:
"I think you all already know about the incident where Black killed more than a dozen Muggles, right?"
It was Sirius Pettigrew who stopped Black, crying and shouting in front of the whole street, "Lily and James, Sirius, how could you do this? How could you do this?"
Then he pulled out his wand.
Unfortunately, Blake was far more agile and blasted Pettigrew into pieces.
At this point, Professor McGonagall finally couldn't hold back her sobs:
"That's a foolish kid. How could he possibly be a match for Blake!"
