Chapter 478 The risk is too great!
“It’s working!” Sarah reported excitedly. “I can sense its energy structure faltering!”
But the amalgamation was more resilient than they had imagined. While enduring the double attack, it began a final stand, charging desperately toward the densest crowd.
“It’s going to cause the final destruction!” Peter warned.
At this crucial moment, a new voice emerged.
"Move aside, let me handle this."
A young woman in a dark blue uniform walked over. She was about twenty-five years old, with silver-white hair and ice-blue eyes. The chill emanating from her caused the surrounding temperature to drop sharply.
"Who are you?" Lynn asked.
“Emma Frost, a mutant,” she introduced herself succinctly, “my power is cryocontrol.”
Without saying a word, she walked directly toward the struggling symbiotic entity. As she approached, the surrounding temperature continued to drop, and the ground began to freeze.
"Everyone back off," Emma commanded. "It's going to be cold."
She raised her hands, and a massive amount of icy energy began to gather. Unlike ordinary freezing attacks, Emma's ability seemed to reach the molecular level, instantly lowering the temperature of matter.
The symbiotic fusion sensed the threat and attempted to attack Emma, but it was too late. Intense freezing energy was released from Emma's hands, instantly enveloping the entire fusion.
Within seconds, the massive symbiotic fusion was completely frozen. Not just on the surface, but frozen solid from the inside out. It remained in its attack posture, but was utterly immobile.
“The freeze is complete,” Emma said calmly, “but it’s only temporary. The ice may only last a few hours.”
“That’s enough,” Lynn breathed a sigh of relief. “We can use this time to arrange more professional containment procedures.”
Seeing that the threat was gone, the Hulk's anger subsided, and his body began to shrink. A few minutes later, a relatively thin middle-aged man appeared in his place.
“Dr. Bruce Banner,” he introduced himself, looking somewhat tired but clear-headed, “I apologize for not arriving sooner.”
“Thank you for your help, Doctor,” Lynn said gratefully. “Without you, we couldn’t have controlled this monster.”
“This is indeed one of the most powerful biological threats I’ve ever seen,” Dr. Banner observed the frozen fusion. “Its biological structure is extremely complex, seemingly a fusion of dozens of different individuals.”
"Can you analyze its composition?" Emily asked as a doctor.
“It requires time and specialized equipment, but initial observations suggest that this fusion may contain at least fifty symbionts and their corresponding hosts,” Banner analyzed. “The degree of fusion between them far exceeds the scope of normal biology.”
This information shocked everyone. The fusion of fifty symbiotes meant that at least fifty people had been sacrificed to create this monster.
“We need to stop more monsters like this from appearing,” Lynn said resolutely, “if the symbiote can create more fusions.”
“The consequences would be unimaginable,” Dr. Banner agreed. “I recommend that a dedicated research team be established immediately to analyze the symbiote fusion mechanism and find ways to prevent and reverse it.”
“Good idea,” Lynn nodded. “I’ll report this to my superiors.”
Just then, an urgent message came through the communicator: "Attention all units, unusual activity has occurred in the central Manhattan area, suspected to be a large-scale gathering of symbiotes."
“It seems the battle isn’t over yet,” Emma said calmly. “I can continue to provide support.”
“Me too,” Dr. Banner said. “This threat requires the efforts of all of us.”
Lynn gazed at the massive, frozen fusion, then at his team and new allies. Though they had succeeded, this was only the beginning. The symbiote threat was far more serious and complex than they had initially imagined.
“Everyone, prepare,” Lynn ordered. “We’re heading to Manhattan. Whatever the symbiotes are planning there, we’ll stop them.”
“Wait a minute,” Emily suddenly said, “before we leave, I want to take a quick sample of this frozen fusion. Analyzing its biological structure might help us better combat other symbiotes.”
“Time is of the essence,” Lynn reminded him.
“It will only take a few minutes,” Emily insisted. “This is a rare opportunity.”
“Okay, but quick,” Lynn agreed.
Emily quickly took several samples from the frozen surface of the fusion and carefully preserved them in a special container.
“Completed,” she announced. “These samples may contain crucial information.”
“Then let’s go,” Lynn said, taking one last look at the monster they had defeated, “hopefully we won’t encounter any stronger enemies.”
But he knew in his heart that, given the evolutionary and adaptive capabilities that the symbiotes had already demonstrated, even greater challenges might be waiting for them ahead.
The convoy set off again, heading towards Manhattan. The Hulk and Emma Frost joined them, greatly enhancing the team's fighting strength.
On the way, Lynn reported the results of the battle in Williamsburg to the command center via communicator and requested the highest level of containment for the frozen fusion.
“Roger that, Lynn. A specialized containment team is on its way,” the dispatcher responded. “We have more intelligence regarding the situation in Manhattan.”
"What intelligence?"
"According to satellite surveillance, a large number of symbiote individuals have appeared in the central Manhattan area, and they appear to be gathering at a specific location," the dispatcher reported, "and this time the scale is larger than any before."
"How big?" Lynn asked.
“Initial estimates suggest at least one hundred individuals, and the number is still increasing,” the dispatcher’s voice betrayed his concern. “It looks like some kind of large-scale gathering or ritual.”
The news silenced everyone in the car. The simultaneous appearance of one hundred symbiotes was beyond the scope of any conventional response.
“What do you think they are preparing?” Dr. Banner asked.
“Perhaps this is the final attack plan,” Peter analyzed. “If tonight’s multi-point attack is just a prelude, then the gathering in Manhattan could be the climax.”
“Or perhaps they’re retreating,” Emma suggested another possibility. “If they realize that human resistance is stronger than expected, they might be preparing to leave Earth.”
“Whatever it is, we must stop them,” Lynn said firmly. “We cannot let them complete their plan.”
The convoy continued towards Manhattan, everyone mentally preparing for the final battle. "Whatever awaits us," Lynn told the team, "we must stand together and protect this city and its innocent inhabitants."
“That’s right,” everyone agreed.
As the convoy approached the heart of Manhattan, Lynn saw a disturbing sight through the car window: several subway entrances were blocked by a strange black substance that looked like some kind of organic barrier.
"Stop the car," Lynn ordered. "Let's assess the situation first."
The convoy stopped near Times Square, a place usually bustling with people, but now unusually quiet. Several subway entrances were completely blocked, and black, writhing substances were visible, clearly alive.
“They’ve taken over the subway system,” Peter observed the closed entrances. “It’s a smart move.”
"Why do you say that?" Chen Kai asked.
“The subway system is a vast underground network with countless passages, tunnels, and entrances,” Dr. Banner analyzed. “If the symbiote controls the entire system, it would be virtually impossible for us to launch an effective siege.”
“Furthermore, the underground environment limits our use of heavy weapons,” Emma added. “My freezing abilities are also limited in enclosed spaces.”
Lynn's communicator rang, and the command center relayed the latest intelligence: "Lynn, we have just lost contact with all surveillance equipment within the subway system. Satellite thermal imaging indicates a large number of signs of life underground, concentrated in several major stations."
“How many signs of life?” Lynn asked.
“At least three hundred, but it’s impossible to tell whether they’re hostages or symbiotes,” the dispatcher replied. “Worse still, the subway system’s ventilation and power systems have been cut off.”
This means that if any hostages are trapped underground, their situation will be very dangerous. Without a ventilation system, the underground space will quickly become oxygen-deprived.
“We need to act immediately,” Lynn decided. “Every minute of delay could result in more casualties.”
Just then, a squad of fully armed soldiers appeared nearby. Leading them was a colonel, who strode towards Lynn.
“I am Colonel Jackson,” he introduced himself, “and I have been ordered to support your operation. We have brought equipment specifically designed for underground warfare.”
“Very good, Colonel,” Lynn shook his hand, “the situation is more complicated than expected. The symbiote has chosen an extremely advantageous defensive position.”
“We have experience,” Colonel Jackson said confidently. “My troops have participated in underground operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
But Lynn knew that the enemy he was facing this time was completely different from humans. "Colonel, I must warn you, symbiotes are no ordinary enemy. They possess superhuman strength and speed, and can change shape. Most importantly, they may attempt to infect your soldiers."
“We are prepared,” the colonel insisted, “and we have specialized biological protection equipment.”
Lynn glanced at his team and then made a decision, "Alright, we'll operate jointly. But I suggest my special task force first go in to scout and assess the situation before formulating a detailed attack plan."
“Agreed,” the colonel nodded. “My troops will establish a perimeter cordon to prevent anything from escaping.”
Just as they were making their plans, a huge explosion suddenly erupted from the nearest subway entrance. The black material sealing the entrance was blasted open, and several heavily armed special forces soldiers rushed out.
“Support! We need medical support!” one of the soldiers shouted.
Lynn and Emily immediately ran over to check on the situation. The soldiers' equipment was badly damaged, and some had deep scratches and bite marks, indicating they had been in a fierce battle.
"What happened?" Lynn asked the sergeant in charge.
“We were the first to storm in,” the sergeant reported breathlessly, “entering the subway system from the 42nd Street entrance fifteen minutes ago.”
"What happened?" Emily asked as she checked on the wounded.
“Hell,” the sergeant replied simply, “that’s hell.”
After calming down slightly, he began his detailed report: "Our team consists of twelve people, all equipped with state-of-the-art biological protective gear and heavy weaponry. Upon entering the subway, we discovered that all the tunnels were covered in a black substance, as if we were moving inside some kind of living organism."
"And then?" Lynn urged.
“We found about fifty trapped civilians at the first station,” the sergeant continued, “but as we approached, we discovered that half of them had already been infected by the symbiote.”
This confirms the worst fears. The symbiote has not only taken over the subway, but is also waging a massive infection campaign there.
“We were trying to rescue uninfected civilians, but we were ambushed,” the sergeant’s voice grew heavy. “The infected attacked us, and their abilities far surpass those of normal humans. Their speed, strength, and even intelligence have been greatly enhanced.”
"Are your protective gear effective?" Dr. Banner asked.
“It has some effect, but it’s not entirely effective,” the sergeant admitted. “The symbiotes seem to be able to find weaknesses in the equipment. And they coordinate their attacks, not like wild beasts but like a well-trained army.”
"Casualties?" Colonel Jackson asked seriously.
The sergeant's face grew even paler. "Of the twelve-man squad, only four escaped. Two were seriously wounded, and one... the other was partially infected by the symbiote."
Everyone looked at the last soldier mentioned. He sat to one side, looking very weak, but what was more worrying was that his eyes occasionally flashed with a silver light.
“How is he?” Emily immediately went over to check on him.
“I feel something in my brain,” the soldier said weakly, “like someone whispering, trying to persuade me to do something.”
These are typical symptoms of partial infection. The symbiote has not yet fully taken control of the host, but it has begun to affect its consciousness.
“We need to treat him immediately,” Emily told Lynn. “If we delay any longer, the infection could become irreversible.”
"Use your previous method?" Lynn asked.
“Yes, but we need to return to a fully equipped medical facility,” Emily replied. “On-site treatment is too risky.”
Upon hearing these reports, Colonel Jackson's expression turned serious. "It seems I underestimated the threat posed by the enemy."
“Moreover,” the sergeant added, “during the retreat, we observed that the entire subway system was like a giant organism. The walls, ceilings, and floors were covered in a black substance, and this substance seemed to have its own consciousness, capable of sensing and reacting.”
“What do you mean?” Sarah asked.
“As we move, the surrounding environment changes accordingly,” the sergeant explained. “The passageways may narrow to block our progress, or suddenly open up, leading us into traps. It’s like the entire subway system has become a giant symbiotic entity.” (End of Chapter)
