Chapter 450: Three teams will operate simultaneously!
“Sounds like a science fiction movie,” a young agent muttered.
“I know this is hard to believe, but it’s true,” Lynn said solemnly. “We are facing an unprecedented threat and must adapt to a new way of fighting.”
Sarah nodded in understanding. "So, what's our attack plan?"
“We’ll operate in three groups,” Lynn devised the strategy. “The first group will enter through the main entrance as a feint to draw attention. The second group will enter through the ventilation system I just escaped from, to flank them. The third group will guard all possible exits to prevent their escape.”
“And you?” Sarah asked.
“I’ll lead the second group because I’m familiar with the layout,” Lynn replied, “and I’ve dealt with mutants before, so I know how to handle them.”
Just as they were formulating a detailed battle plan, Emily ran over from the manor's main building.
“Lynn! Are you alright?” she asked worriedly. “I heard an explosion underground.”
“I’m fine, thank you for your help tonight,” Lynn said gratefully. “Without your help, I might not have been able to escape.”
"So how is it now?" Emily asked.
“We’re preparing for the final operation,” Lynn replied, “but it’s dangerous this time. You should wait in a safe place.”
“I understand,” Emily nodded, “but if you need legal support, feel free to contact me.”
Lynn looked at Emily gratefully, then turned to the team. "Prepare to move out! Remember, we're not dealing with ordinary criminals; be extra careful."
“Sarah, have everyone retreat to a safe distance,” Lynn ordered. “I need to contact headquarters first, report the situation, and request special support.”
“Special support?” Sarah asked, puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“The threat we face is beyond the norm,” Lynn said gravely. “The FBI has a dedicated department for handling these kinds of unusual situations, though it’s rarely activated, but we have no other choice right now.”
Lynn took out his encrypted satellite phone and dialed the FBI headquarters' emergency hotline. This number was directly connected to the deputy director's office and was only used in the most urgent situations.
"This is the office of the FBI Deputy Director," a serious voice said.
“I am Detective Lynn Hall, Detective ID 7439, New York Precinct,” Lynn reported his identity. “I need to report an emergency involving a supernatural threat to the Deputy Commissioner.”
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone. "Please wait a moment, the deputy director will answer shortly."
Soon, a familiar voice came from Lynn: "Detective Hall, this is Deputy Chief Robert Stone. What do you mean by 'supernatural threat'?"
Lynn took a deep breath and began his detailed report: "Deputy Director, while investigating a secret project called 'Project Vulcan,' I encountered four individuals with unusual abilities. They can control electricity, manipulate metal, teleport, and possess superhuman strength, respectively."
"Hall, are you sure you're not mistaken?" Deputy Director Stone's tone turned serious. "What you've said..."
“I’m absolutely certain, Deputy Director,” Lynn interrupted, “I fought them myself and nearly lost my life. This isn’t some high-tech weapon or magic show; this is genuine supernatural ability.”
The sound of typing came from the other end of the phone; Deputy Director Stone was clearly looking up some information.
“Hall, where exactly are you now?” Deputy Director Stone asked.
“On the eastern part of Long Island, at Victor Caravaggio’s private estate,” Lynn replied, “we discovered an underground laboratory, possibly a site for human experimentation.”
“Caravaggio,” Deputy Chief Stone repeated the name. “That name is on our watch list. Hall, can you ensure the site is secure?”
“We currently control the outer perimeter of the manor, but the underground facilities remain occupied by the enemy,” Lynn reported, “and they likely have multiple escape routes.”
“Understood,” Deputy Director Stone said. “Hall, I’m initiating the Olympus Protocol and sending a special operations team to support you.”
Lynn was surprised to hear the name. The 'Olympus Protocol' was one of the FBI's top secrets, specifically used to handle cases involving the paranormal. Most agents were unaware of its existence.
“Deputy Director, how long will it take me?” Lynn asked.
“The special operations team will arrive within two hours,” Deputy Director Stone replied. “They have the specialized equipment and training to handle this type of threat. Until then, secure the site and prevent anyone from escaping.”
"Received, Deputy Director."
“And also, Hall,” Deputy Director Stone’s tone became more serious, “from this moment forward, this case is classified as Top Secret. No related information may be disclosed to the media or unauthorized personnel.”
"clear."
After hanging up the phone, Lynn turned to his team. "Special support is on its way and should arrive within two hours. Until then, we need to make sure those mutants don't escape."
"What kind of special support?" James asked curiously.
“A unit specifically tasked with handling unusual threats,” Lynn replied briefly. “I can’t go into too much detail right now.”
Sarah nodded in understanding. "So what do we do now?"
“Continue to monitor the manor, especially all possible entrances and exits,” Lynn instructed, “while evacuating residents from the surrounding area; we don’t know what will happen next.”
For the next two hours, the FBI team established a tight cordon around the estate. Technicians used thermal imaging equipment to monitor underground activity and detected signs of life moving within the underground facilities, but their exact location was difficult to pinpoint.
At 11:30 p.m., several unmarked black vehicles arrived silently at the scene. The vehicles parked at a temporary command post one kilometer away from the manor without attracting any attention.
Twelve personnel dressed in specialized tactical gear emerged from the vehicle. Their equipment appeared more advanced than that of regular SWAT teams, with sophisticated sensors mounted on their helmets and tactical vests seemingly integrating some kind of electronic system.
The team leader was a tall, efficient woman in her forties. She walked directly to Lynn and showed her a special badge.
“I am Rachel Black, commander of the Special Operations Group,” she introduced herself succinctly. “Deputy Director Stone sent us to support you.”
Lynn carefully examined the documents, and nodded after confirming they were correct. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Commander Black. The situation is more complicated than we initially thought."
“I have reviewed your report,” Commander Black said. “Four targets with anomalous abilities: electrical control, metal manipulation, teleportation, and superhuman strength.”
“Yes, and their resilience is remarkable,” Lynn added. “I temporarily subdued them with chemicals, but I estimate they’ve recovered by now.” Commander Blake nodded. “We have specialized equipment and tactics to deal with this threat. Let me introduce my team.”
She pointed to a team member equipped with special weaponry. "This is the 'Disruptor,' specializing in dealing with electromagnetic abilities. His equipment can generate powerful electromagnetic pulses, interfering with current control and metal manipulation abilities."
Then, pointing to another team member carrying large equipment, he explained, "This is the 'Locator.' His equipment can track and lock onto the location of teleporters, and even predict their teleportation target."
“This is the ‘Frozen One,’” she pointed to the third team member, “equipped with a liquid nitrogen weapon system, specifically designed to deal with strength-based ability users.”
Lynn looked at the specialized equipment in surprise. "You've been researching this threat all this time?"
“The FBI’s special operations group was established twenty years ago,” Commander Blake explained, “initially to address the threat of terrorism, but over time we discovered that there are indeed some unusual individuals in the world.”
“How many such cases are there?” Sarah asked curiously.
“More than you imagine, but less than the public fears,” Commander Blake replied. “Most of the time, we’re able to handle it discreetly, avoiding any panic.”
“What about Project Vulcan?” Lynn asked. “Have you heard of it before?”
Commander Blake's expression turned serious. "We are indeed tracking some suspicious research projects, but the 'Vulcan Project' is larger than we anticipated. If someone is indeed mass-producing superhumans..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but the meaning was clear.
"What's the current plan?" Lynn asked.
“We need to conduct a detailed reconnaissance of the site first,” Commander Blake said, “to understand the specific layout of the underground facility and the exact location of the enemy. Then we can develop a precise assault plan.”
She turned to her team, “'Ghost,' prepare your reconnaissance equipment. 'Technician,' establish the communications network. The rest of you, check your gear; we're about to have a tough fight.”
The special operations team members got to work. Lynn noticed that their equipment was indeed very advanced, and some of the technology was something he had never seen before.
"Where did these equipment come from?" Lynn asked.
“The government’s secret research and development department,” Commander Blake replied. “When you know the enemy might possess supernatural abilities, you need corresponding countermeasures.”
A team member codenamed "Ghost" approached, carrying a device that looked like radar on his back. "Commander, I'm ready. This device can penetrate the ground and create a 3D image of underground facilities."
“Very good, begin scanning,” Commander Blake ordered.
Over the next half hour, specialized equipment conducted a comprehensive scan of the manor's underground area. The results revealed that the underground facilities were far more complex than Lynn had previously known, featuring multiple layers and a complex network of passageways.
“Here,” the ghost said, pointing to the scanned images, “this is the main laboratory area, with four signs of life. This is the storage area, and this is likely the control center.”
“And here,” he pointed to another part of the image, “there’s a large underground parking garage that connects to a tunnel leading to the coast.”
“A coastal tunnel?” Lynn frowned. “That means they might have escaped by sea.”
“We need to seal off that exit,” Commander Blake decided. “SEAL Team, proceed to the coast immediately and stop any personnel attempting to escape by sea.”
The three team members immediately took action and went to the coast to set up a blockade.
“Now, let’s devise an attack plan,” Commander Blake said. “Based on the scan results, we will split into three groups and attack simultaneously.”
She unfolded a floor plan of the underground facility on a makeshift tactical table. “First team, enter through the main entrance and attack the laboratory area directly. Second team, enter through the ventilation system and take control of the control center. Third team, enter through the emergency exits and cut off escape routes.”
“I want to join Group One,” Lynn pleaded. “I know the mutants’ abilities best.”
“Agreed,” Commander Blake nodded, “but you must follow our tactical orders. The danger posed by these superhumans should not be underestimated.”
“There’s another problem,” Sarah raised. “If Caravaggio and Weber are still inside, we need to capture them alive if possible. They possess crucial information about Project Vulcan.”
“I understand, but if the situation is dangerous, protecting personnel safety is the top priority,” Commander Blake responded.
The raid was scheduled to begin at 12:30 a.m. During the final preparations, the special operations team provided Lynn and the other FBI agents with some basic anti-paranormal equipment.
“This is an electromagnetic shielding vest,” the technician explained to Lynn, “it protects against electrical attacks. This is ceramic armor, unaffected by magnetism. This is infrared goggles, which can detect heat signatures left by teleporters.”
After putting on the equipment, Lynn felt much safer than before. Although there were still huge risks, at least he had the tools to fight against supernatural threats.
"All teams, check your communications equipment," Commander Blake ordered through his headset. "We're using an encrypted channel, frequency 7.2."
"First group received."
"Second group received."
"Third group received."
"The SEAL team is in position, and the coastal exit is blocked."
Commander Blake glanced at his watch. "It's 12:25. We'll begin the operation in five minutes. Remember, these superhumans, while possessing special abilities, are still human and have weaknesses. Remain calm and execute the plan."
Lynn felt an unprecedented sense of tension. This would be the most dangerous mission of his career, but also possibly the most important. If they failed, "Project Vulcan" could continue to develop, creating more super-powered criminals and threatening public safety.
"Time's up, begin the operation!" Commander Blake ordered.
The three groups simultaneously began their ascent into the manor's underground facilities. Lynn followed the first group, feeling both nervous and excited. This time, with professional equipment and well-trained partners, their chances of success were much greater.
The first team approached the underground laboratory through the secret passage Lynn had previously entered. This time, they had thermal imaging equipment, allowing them to detect the enemy's location in advance.
"Target confirmed. Four heat sources within the lab," Ghost reported via headset. "Locations are..."
He provided a detailed report of each mutant's exact location, which made the raids much more precise.
"'Disruptor,' prepare electromagnetic pulse," Commander Blake ordered. "'Frozen One,' prepare liquid nitrogen weapon. 'Locator,' lock onto the teleportation ability user." (End of Chapter)
