Chapter 435 Creation and Destruction Occur Simultaneously
This made Lynn realize that although their trip to Hawaii was coming to an end, the wonderful memories and unfulfilled desire to explore it might be the reason for them to return.
At 3 p.m., they began their return to the pier. Although a little reluctant to leave, their four-hour trip to Lanai Island had been incredibly rewarding.
“Today was absolutely perfect,” Emily said on the way back to the ship. “Snorkeling, sunshine, delicious food, and such beautiful scenery—it was better than any travel brochure could describe.”
“And most importantly,” Lynn added, “we experienced authentic Hawaiian culture and nature, not just a superficial tourist trip.”
Back on the patrol boat, Captain Tom began preparations for the return voyage. The sea was slightly more turbulent in the afternoon than in the morning, but still calm. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow on the water.
“We’ll take a slightly different route on the return trip,” Captain Tom said, “so you can see different seascapes.”
Sure enough, the return journey allowed them to appreciate the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands from another perspective. The evening sunlight created a golden band on the sea, seabirds flew around the boats, and occasionally other ships could be seen in the distance.
“Look at the sunset over there,” Emily said, pointing to the western sky.
The sun was slowly approaching the horizon, painting the sky with a gradient of orange and purple. Watching the sunset at sea was a completely different experience from watching it on land; it was far more spectacular and breathtaking.
“Watching the sunset at sea is truly special,” Lynn exclaimed. “It feels like the sun is about to sink into the sea.”
“That’s why so many people fall in love with life at sea,” Captain Tom said. “You see different sunrises and sunsets every day, and you never get tired of it.”
At 5:30 p.m., the patrol boat safely returned to Maui Port. Although the day's journey had come to an end, everyone felt it was still too short.
“Thank you for the arrangements today,” Lynn thanked Officer Nakamura and Captain Tom. “This is the best day of our trip to Hawaii.”
“We should be thanking you,” Inspector Nakamura replied. “Without your help, we couldn’t have solved the statue case so quickly.”
“Moreover,” Captain Tom added, “spending a day with such professional FBI agents is a very interesting experience for us.”
As they said goodbye at the pier, Officer Nakamura gave them some advice: "Tomorrow is your last day in Hawaii, right? I recommend going to Haleakala to watch the sunrise; it's an experience you absolutely shouldn't miss."
“We have that plan,” Emily said excitedly. “I’ve heard that the sunrise there is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.”
“That’s true,” Officer Nakamura confirmed. “We need to set off early; we’ll probably start climbing around four in the morning, but it’s definitely worth it.”
On the way back to the hotel, Lynn and Emily were still immersed in the wonderful memories of the day.
“Today’s experience has given me a completely different understanding of Hawaii,” Emily said. “It’s not just the beautiful scenery, but also the friendliness of the people and the charm of the culture.”
“Yes,” Lynn agreed, “and through yesterday’s case and today’s trip, we’ve gotten to know each other much better. This trip to Hawaii has been truly special.”
"Tomorrow is the last day," Emily said with a touch of sadness. "Time flies too fast."
“But we still have the sunrise over Haleakala,” Lynn reminded us, “which would be a perfect ending.”
“Yes,” Emily nodded in agreement, “and I have a feeling that tomorrow’s sunrise will bring us even more surprises.”
As night fell, they sat on the beach, listening to the gentle sound of the waves and gazing at the starry sky. The Hawaiian night sky is exceptionally clear, allowing them to see many stars that are invisible in the city.
"The starry sky here is so beautiful," Emily said, gazing up at the sky. "It feels like you can see the entire Milky Way."
“Away from the city’s light pollution, the starry sky is indeed more spectacular,” Lynn said, looking up as well. “This tranquility and beauty brings a sense of peace to the soul.”
They sat quietly, enjoying this rare moment of tranquility. A gentle sea breeze caressed them, the stars twinkled, and the occasional cry of a seabird drifted from afar. This pure natural beauty allowed them to temporarily forget all their worries and stress.
“Lynn,” Emily said softly, “thank you for bringing me to Hawaii. These past few days have been even more wonderful than I imagined.”
“I also want to thank you,” Lynn replied sincerely. “Your company made this trip even more meaningful. And your help in the investigation was also very important.”
“We’re a great team,” Emily said with a smile, “both at work and while traveling.”
“Yes,” Lynn agreed, “we did work very well together.”
At 10 o'clock, they decided to go back to their room to rest and prepare for the sunrise trip to the volcano the next morning. Although they would have to get up very early, they were all looking forward to the upcoming experience.
"See you tomorrow," Emily said in the elevator. "I hope for a clear sunrise tomorrow."
“I believe it will,” Lynn replied, “just like the perfect weather today.”
At 3:30 a.m. the next day, Lynn's alarm clock rang on time. Although he had only slept for a few hours, he was in good spirits and full of anticipation for the upcoming sunrise trip to the volcano. He quickly washed up and changed into suitable hiking clothes: a long-sleeved sweatshirt, sturdy hiking boots, and a lightweight windproof jacket.
At four o'clock, he met Emily in the hotel lobby. Emily also looked excited; despite getting up early, her eyes still sparkled with anticipation.
"Are you ready to witness the most beautiful sunrise in the world?" Emily asked, holding a thermos full of hot coffee.
“Of course,” Lynn replied, “although it takes two hours to drive to the top, it’s absolutely worth it.”
They rented a four-wheel drive vehicle and began their journey to Haleakala volcano. The road was quiet in the early morning, with only a few cars passing by occasionally. As the altitude increased, the temperature gradually decreased, and the vegetation on both sides of the road constantly changed.
“From tropical coastlines to high-altitude environments, we crossed several climate zones in just two hours,” Emily remarked, observing the scenery outside the window. “The geographical diversity is truly amazing.”
“Yes, Hawaii’s geography is indeed very unique,” Lynn replied, focusing on driving. “Volcanic activity created this distinctive terrain.”
After an hour and a half of driving along mountain roads, they arrived at the entrance to Haleakala National Park. Even in the early morning, there were already quite a few vehicles there, indicating that many people had the same plans.
“Looks like we’re not the only ones who want to see the sunrise,” Emily noticed the cars in the parking lot. “That proves the sunrise here is truly legendary,” Lynn said.
They continued driving towards the summit, the altitude increasing and the air becoming thinner. By the time they reached the viewpoint, the altitude had exceeded three thousand meters. The temperature there was nearly twenty degrees Celsius lower than at sea level, and they had to put on the jackets they had brought.
“It’s so cold here,” Emily said, pulling her coat tighter around herself. “It’s hard to believe we were on a warm beach just a few hours ago.”
The viewpoint is a spacious platform where about fifty tourists from all over the world have gathered. Everyone is quietly waiting for the sunrise; occasionally someone will chat quietly, but most of the time they are silently anticipating.
“It’s 5:30 now,” Lynn checked his watch. “Sunrise should be around 6:15.”
While waiting, they admired the crater landscape below. Haleakala Crater is a massive depression, approximately ten kilometers in diameter and nearly eight hundred meters deep. In the morning light, the rocks within the crater displayed a variety of unique colors and shapes.
“It looks like the surface of the moon,” Emily exclaimed. “So desolate, yet so magnificent.”
“It’s said that American astronauts once conducted lunar training here,” Lynn said, “because the terrain is indeed very similar.”
At six o'clock, the eastern sky began to lighten. The tourists became quieter, all focusing their attention on the horizon.
At 6:10, the edge of the sun began to appear above the distant mountains. At first, it was just a small bright spot, then gradually became a semicircle, and finally the complete sun rose above the sea of clouds.
“It’s magnificent,” Emily whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “It’s truly the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen.”
Lynn was also deeply awestruck by the magnificent sight. Looking down at the sea of clouds from three thousand meters above, watching the sun rise from the clouds, the feeling was truly indescribable. Golden sunlight gradually bathed the earth, the sea of clouds rolled and churned, the distant mountains were like paintings, and the whole world was dyed golden.
“Now I understand why this place is called the ‘House of the Sun,’” Lynn said. “It feels like we’re so close to the sun.”
The sunrise process lasted about twenty minutes, and as the sun fully rose, the temperature began to warm up. Tourists started taking photos and exchanging their impressions, and the once quiet viewing platform became lively.
“We should stay a little longer and enjoy this moment,” Emily suggested.
They stayed on the observation deck for another hour, where, as the sun rose higher, they could see the details of the crater and the outlines of other islands in the distance more clearly.
"Would you like to see a volcanic area?" a passing local guide asked. "There's an active volcano on the Big Island, Kilauea, which is currently active, and you can see real lava flows."
This suggestion immediately caught Lynn and Emily's attention.
"Kilauea Volcano?" Emily asked excitedly, "Can we really see lava?"
“Yes,” the guide confirmed, “now is the best time to observe volcanic activity. It takes about two hours to drive there from here.”
Lynn and Emily discussed it and decided to change their original plans and go to the Big Island to observe the active volcano. This was indeed a rare opportunity, and their flight was the next evening, so they had plenty of time.
“But we need to go back to the hotel to pack our luggage first,” Lynn said, “and then take a plane to the Big Island.”
“No need for all that trouble,” the guide said. “We can take a boat, which will offer beautiful sea views and save time. I know a boat owner who can arrange a boat for this afternoon.”
After discussion, they decided to accept the suggestion. They would first return to Maui to pack their necessities, and then take a boat to the Big Island to observe the active volcano.
At 1 p.m., they boarded a medium-sized cruise ship, preparing to head to the Big Island. Besides them, there were a dozen or so other tourists on board, all there to observe volcanic activity.
"What would it be like to see a volcano from the sea?" Emily asked the captain with great anticipation.
“It’s spectacular,” the experienced captain replied. “You can see lava flowing into the sea; it’s a sight you’ll never forget.”
The ship left Maui harbor and headed towards the Big Island. The sea conditions were excellent, calm, and sunny. About two hours later, they could see the outline of the Big Island.
“That’s Kilauea volcano,” the captain said, pointing to the smoking peak in the distance. “Do you see those plumes of smoke? That’s a sign of volcanic activity.”
Sure enough, in the southeast of the large island, several plumes of smoke could be clearly seen shooting straight into the sky. Occasionally, red glows could also be seen, which were reflections of lava.
“This is so exciting!” Emily took out her camera to take pictures. “This is real volcanic activity!”
As the ships slowly approached the shore, they could see more clearly the details of the volcanic activity. Lava flowed down the mountainside and eventually into the sea, producing large amounts of steam and smoke.
“This is the power of the Earth,” Lynn exclaimed, “creation and destruction occur simultaneously.”
At four o'clock in the afternoon, the boat docked at a small port on the Big Island. They decided to go ashore to observe the volcano up close, and then take the boat back to Maui in the evening.
“We’ll stay here until nine o’clock tonight,” the captain told them. “The volcano is even more spectacular at night; the red glow of the lava is especially noticeable in the darkness.”
After disembarking, they took a local sightseeing bus to Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, they could see the impact of volcanic activity on the terrain: black volcanic rock everywhere, sparse vegetation, and the smell of sulfur permeating the air.
“The environment here is indeed very special,” Emily observed the surrounding geological features. “You can see how volcanoes have altered the terrain.”
Upon reaching the observation point, they were awestruck by the sight before them. About a kilometer away, lava was slowly flowing, emitting red and orange glows. Occasionally, splashes of lava would rise, forming beautiful arcs.
“This is incredible,” Lynn said, “to see material from the Earth’s interior directly exposed on the surface.”
They stayed at the observation point for two hours, watching the lava slowly flow and listening to the roar of the volcano. This experience was completely different from their previous visits to the beach and forest, allowing them to feel a more primal and powerful side of nature.
As dusk approached, the sky began to darken, and the volcanic landscape became even more spectacular. Against the dark backdrop, the red lava stood out starkly, like the beating heart of the earth. (End of Chapter)
