Chapter 423 1 to 2!
"Detective, according to the latest weather data, the weather conditions are better than last time," McDonald reported. "The wind has weakened, and visibility has improved."
“Excellent,” Lynn said. “This is very beneficial to our operation.”
The team members began loading their equipment. This time they brought more polar gear, including better thermal suits, communication equipment, and specialized weapons.
Martin also prepared some special equipment, including a portable heater and a thermos. "Maintaining body temperature is key to functioning in that environment," he explained.
Dr. Smith approached Lynn. "Lynn, I've prepared a special device for Martin. This device will help him control his moisture in polar environments, improving the stability of his abilities."
“Thank you, this is very helpful to us,” Lynn said gratefully.
Final preparations were quickly completed. The team members donned heavy polar gear, looking like an expedition team ready to conquer the Arctic.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Lynn addressed everyone before boarding, "this operation is of great significance. We must not only rescue the victims, but also thwart a terrifying plot that could threaten the entire world."
“We will succeed,” Martin said firmly. “Evil will not prevail.”
The helicopter engines started, and the huge propellers began to spin. With a roar, the plane, carrying hope and determination, slowly took off, heading towards the distant Arctic Station No. 2.
Through the porthole, the town of Barrow below could be seen gradually shrinking into the night. This northernmost town in the world witnessed their preparations and departure, and now it is silently praying for them.
"One hour to reach the target," McDonald reported over the intercom. "All personnel, prepare."
During the flight, Lynn gave the battle plan a final check. Although time was short and preparations were insufficient, they had done their utmost. Now, they could only rely on the team's strength and a bit of luck.
"Martin, is there anything else we need to be aware of?" Lynn asked.
Martin closed his eyes, sensing his surroundings. "I'm starting to perceive the changes in moisture ahead. The environment there is truly unique, filled with all sorts of complex energies."
"Energy?" Michael asked curiously.
“It’s hard to describe,” Martin said. “It’s like something is interfering with the natural water cycle. It could be the experiments they were conducting.”
This discovery heightened everyone's anxiety. If the enemy's experiments were indeed interfering with the natural environment, the level of danger might be beyond their imagination.
“We must stop them no matter what,” Lynn said resolutely.
An hour later, the Chinook helicopter arrived over Arctic Station 2. The weather conditions were indeed much better than last time; although still bitterly cold, the wind was noticeably weaker and visibility had improved considerably. Through the porthole, the outline of the research station below and the lights twinkling between the buildings were clearly visible.
“Much clearer than last time,” Mark observed the target through his night-vision scope. “I can see at least three sentries patrolling, and two snowmobiles parked next to the main building.”
Martin closed his eyes, carefully sensing his surroundings below. "I can feel strong energy fluctuations; the experimental equipment is operating at high capacity. And," he frowned, "there are signs of life in many people, but most are very faint."
“Victims,” Emily said nervously, “they must be conducting large-scale experiments.”
Lynn confirmed the landing plan with Major McDonald via radio. "Major, can we land at the previous location?"
“Sure, but I can’t wait too long this time,” McDonald replied. “Fuel is limited, and the magnetic interference here is severe; prolonged stays will affect the navigation system.”
“Understood, we will complete the mission as soon as possible,” Lynn said.
The helicopter landed one kilometer from the research station. This time, all the team members were much more composed, and the equipment checks and disembarkation process went much more smoothly than last time. Martin was the last to disembark, and as his feet touched the ice, his entire demeanor seemed to subtly change.
"How are you feeling?" Lynn asked.
“Excellent,” Martin took a deep breath. “Although the temperature is low, the ice and snow here have provided me with ample resources. I have never fought in such a rich aquatic environment.”
After the helicopter took off, the team began advancing towards the target. This time they adopted a more cautious tactic: Mark was in charge of forward reconnaissance, Martin and Lynn were in the center, Michael and Jack were in the rearguard, and David was responsible for communications and electronic support.
“Detective, I’ve detected strong electronic interference,” David reported. “The enemy’s defenses are more sophisticated than before.”
“As expected,” Lynn replied. “They must have learned their lesson from last time.”
As the team approached the perimeter of the research station, Martin suddenly raised his hand to signal a halt.
“Something’s up,” he whispered. “I sense a familiar energy fluctuation; that ice mutant is up ahead.”
Lynn immediately signaled to his team to prepare for battle. Sure enough, less than a minute later, several figures emerged from the shadows of the building and moved quickly toward them.
“It’s the same group as last time,” Mark confirmed through his scope. “The ice mutants are in the lead, the storm mutants are on the left, and there are a few regular armed men.”
“Proceed according to plan,” Lynn ordered. “Martin, you’re in charge of dealing with the ice mutants. The rest of you, execute the plan as trained.”
The enemy clearly recognized them as well, and the ice mutants immediately launched an attack. A massive ice spike hurtled towards Martin. But this time, the situation was completely different; Martin didn't dodge, but instead stretched out his hands to meet the attack.
An astonishing thing happened. The ice spike, which should have been deadly, instantly turned into a cloud of mist upon contact with Martin's palm. Under his control, it then reformed into dozens of small ice needles, which shot back towards the enemy.
The ice mutants were clearly unprepared for this situation and hastily created ice shields for defense. But Martin's attacks were not only numerous but also cunning; several ice needles pierced through the gaps in the defenses, striking the enemy's shoulders and thighs.
"Well done!" Jack shouted excitedly.
But the battle had only just begun. The ice mutant was enraged. He slammed his hands into the ground, and instantly countless ice spikes appeared within a radius of tens of meters, piercing the team like sharp traps.
This time, Martin displayed an even more astonishing ability. With a single downward press of his hand, all the ice spikes melted into water the instant they rose, then formed a ring of water under his control, protecting the team in the center.
"Now!" Lynn shouted. Mark immediately opened fire, bullets piercing through the gaps in the water wall and accurately striking the ice mutant. But the enemy reacted quickly, creating an ice shield to block the attack.
Storm Mutant then joined the battle, creating a blizzard in an attempt to replicate his previous tactics. But Martin was prepared; he waved his hands, and the water wall instantly transformed into a semi-circular water shield, isolating the blizzard.
"Visibility is clear!" Michael reported. "We won't be affected by the blizzard this time."
Jack seized the opportunity to throw several smoke grenades, further disrupting the enemy's vision. Under the cover of smoke, the squad began to change positions, forming an encirclement.
The ice mutant realized the situation was dire and launched an even stronger attack. He raised his hands high, and the ground began to tremble violently as countless ice pillars rose from the ground, dense as a forest.
But Martin's response was far more ingenious. Instead of taking the attack head-on, he used the icicles as raw materials. Under his control, the icicles began to melt, forming a giant water sphere that floated in the air.
"Everyone, scatter!" Martin shouted.
The team members immediately dispersed in different directions. Martin, controlling the giant water sphere, suddenly hurled it towards the enemy. The water sphere split into dozens of smaller spheres in mid-air, attacking the enemy from different angles.
Despite creating multiple layers of defense, the ice mutant was still hit by several water spheres in the face of such a dense barrage. Even worse, those water spheres froze instantly upon impact, freezing parts of the enemies' limbs.
"His left arm is frozen!" Emily reported excitedly.
Taking advantage of the enemy's restricted movement, Mark fired again. This time, the bullet successfully struck the ice mutant's left shoulder. Although the heavy winter clothing mitigated the damage, it was enough to impair his combat ability.
Seeing their comrade wounded, the Storm mutants intensified their attack. The blizzard grew even more violent, the temperature plummeted, and even Martin's water shield began to crystallize.
“He’s intensifying the blizzard,” Martin sensed the changing environment. “The temperature is dropping too quickly, and my controls are starting to suffer.”
Lynn immediately made a judgment, "Jack, use explosives to disrupt their rhythm."
Jack acted immediately, precisely dropping several timed bombs around the enemy. Although the explosions did not directly injure the mutants, the loud noise and shockwaves successfully disrupted their concentration.
With the Storm Mutant's abilities temporarily weakened, Martin immediately seized the opportunity to counterattack. He turned the water in his hand into steam, then used the temperature difference to create a thick fog around the enemy, severely impairing their vision.
“Now is the time for close combat,” Michael said.
Lynn nodded in agreement. "Everyone, attack at close range, following the teamwork we practiced."
The squad began to tighten the encirclement. Under the cover provided by Martin, the team successfully approached the enemy. This close-quarters combat was actually more disadvantageous for the mutants, as they had to worry about accidentally injuring their comrades.
The ice mutant attempted to create ice walls to block the team members' approach, but Martin managed to defuse them each time. Their abilities canceled each other out, turning the battle into a contest between ordinary team members.
In this situation, the FBI agents' professional training became apparent. Mark's marksmanship, Michael's tactics, and Jack's demolition skills all played crucial roles in close combat.
Michael subdued an ordinary enemy soldier, while Jack struck him with a tranquilizer dart. Despite his powerful abilities, the Storm mutant was clearly outmatched in hand-to-hand combat by a well-trained FBI agent.
"Grab him!" Lynn shouted.
Just as the team was about to achieve complete victory, an unexpected event occurred. More enemies suddenly rushed out of the main building of the research station, including several mutants who also appeared to possess special abilities.
"Reinforcements are here!" David warned.
Among the newly introduced enemies are a mutant capable of manipulating metal and an enhanced mutant who appears to possess superhuman strength. Their arrival immediately alters the balance of the battlefield.
The metal-manipulated mutant displayed formidable offensive power upon its appearance, causing nearby metal equipment and weapons to fly uncontrollably. Mark's sniper rifle was forcibly taken, and Jack's explosive devices also began to malfunction.
“Damn it,” Jack cursed, “my equipment has been compromised.”
The enhanced mutant charged directly at Martin, his speed and strength far exceeding that of a normal human. Although Martin managed to create an ice wall as a defense, it shattered like paper under the opponent's powerful punches.
“Martin!” Emily called out anxiously.
The situation became extremely dangerous. Faced with a combined attack from four mutants, the team began to be at a disadvantage. But at this critical moment, Lynn demonstrated outstanding leadership skills.
"Change tactics!" Lynn shouted. "Martin, focus on dealing with ice and metal types. The rest of you, concentrate your fire on enhanced and storm types."
This decision was wise. While Martin would struggle against two opponents, his water-based abilities were somewhat effective against ice and metal-based attacks. Furthermore, while enhanced and storm-type mutants possessed strong individual abilities, they would be overwhelmed when facing coordinated attacks from multiple opponents.
Martin began to unleash his full power. He no longer held back, but instead manipulated all the surrounding water on a large scale. The snow and ice throughout the battlefield responded to his call, forming a massive water-based energy field.
Within this energy field, the ice mutant's attacks are significantly weakened because Martin immediately seizes control of the ice he creates. The metal-manipulating mutant is also affected, as Martin can use water to disrupt the metal's magnetic field.
“That’s amazing,” Michael exclaimed during a break in his fight with the enhanced mutant.
Meanwhile, Storm Mutant was also starting to struggle against the concentrated attacks from his teammates. Although he could create blizzards, he couldn't defend against attacks from multiple directions simultaneously.
Although Jack's equipment was under control, his spare weapons came in handy. Several flashbangs successfully disrupted the Storm mutant's vision, creating opportunities for the other team members to attack.
Although Mark lost his sniper rifle, his pistol shooting was equally accurate. At close range, the pistol's power was sufficient to inflict effective casualties.
David used electronic devices to disrupt enemy communications, preventing them from calling for more support.
After ten minutes of intense fighting, the tide began to turn in favor of the FBI team. Martin, not only holding his own against two opponents, gradually gained the upper hand. His water-based abilities were extremely effective in the Arctic environment, making him almost completely at home. (End of Chapter)
