Chapter 377 An Unusual Partnership
Lynn Hall pondered this information and realized that the situation was more complex and dangerous than he had initially imagined.
“May I ask a question that might be a little sensitive?” He looked at Dr. McCoy and Wolverine.
The two mutants waited for him to continue.
"How does the Academy view mutants who don't agree with your peaceful coexistence philosophy? Like Irene Sharp and the Brotherhood of Mutants?"
The atmosphere in the room subtly shifted. Wolverine's expression grew more serious, while Dr. McCoy removed his glasses and carefully wiped them, seemingly organizing his thoughts.
“This is a complex issue,” Dr. McCoy finally answered. “The Brotherhood isn’t our enemy, at least not entirely. We share the same goal—protecting mutants—but our methods are drastically different.”
“Professor Xavier has always believed in the possibility of peaceful coexistence,” Wolverine added, “through education, understanding, and cooperation. The Brotherhood, on the other hand, believes conflict is inevitable, and mutants must be prepared to protect themselves if necessary, even through radical means.”
“Like your conversation with Erin,” Dr. McCoy said with a smile, clearly noticing their previous interaction, “change within the system versus change outside the system. Both approaches have value, and both have limitations.”
Lynn Hall pondered the answer carefully, sensing its honesty and complexity. It wasn't a simple binary opposition, but rather a complex spectrum of ideas and methods.
“Thank you for your honesty,” he said. “It has been very helpful in understanding the whole situation.”
They went on to discuss some scientific and technical details, particularly the biological basis of mutant abilities. Lynnhall found Dr. McCoy to be an excellent educator, able to explain complex concepts in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
At the end of the visit, Jennifer and Coleman expressed their desire to visit the rescued mutants in the medical area, while Lynn Hall was invited to the outdoor area where some students were conducting some kind of training activity.
The college's outdoor training ground was a wide lawn surrounded by tall trees and a carefully landscaped area. When Lynn Hall arrived, about a dozen older students were engaged in some kind of teamwork exercise, supervised by a female teacher he didn't recognize.
“Jubilee Lee,” Wolverine introduced, pointing to the Asian female teacher, “one of our senior members, whose ability is to generate explosive energy. She’s in charge of teamwork training for advanced students.”
Lynn Hall observed the training process, impressed by the students' combinations of abilities and tactical cooperation. One student, capable of controlling ice, worked with another, able to generate heat, to create temperature variations and fog; another group used teleportation and force field abilities for rapid attacks and defensive maneuvers.
“They are very well trained,” Lynn Hall commented, “not just in terms of individual ability, but also in teamwork.”
“This is the core of X-Men training,” Wolverine explained. “Individual strength is limited, but the right combination and strategy can deal with almost any threat.”
After training, Jubilee walked over, nodded to Wolverine, and then looked curiously at Lynn Hall.
“This is Detective Lynn Hall, FBI,” Wolverine introduced. “He provided crucial assistance in the operation at Adirondack.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Inspector,” Jubilee said, extending her hand. “I’ve heard about your performance in the Danger Room. Impressive, especially for an ordinary person.”
Lynn Hall took her hand, noticing that the term "normal person" seemed to be a common, but not offensive, classification within the mutant community. "Thank you. Your student is very well trained."
“Interested in participating?” Jubilee suddenly asked, a challenging glint in her eyes. “We’re doing some basic combat training, nothing special, just basic physical skills. Maybe you could demonstrate some FBI techniques?”
Lynn Hall looked at Wolverine in surprise, who simply shrugged, as if to say, "Your choice."
After a moment's consideration, Lynn Hall nodded in agreement: "Of course, if it would be helpful to the students."
Jubilee smiled and turned to the students: “Today we have a special guest, Detective Lynn Hall, a member of the FBI. He has agreed to demonstrate some law enforcement tactical skills. Who would like to volunteer?”
Several students hesitated for a moment, then a tall boy who looked to be about eighteen years old raised his hand: "I'd like to try, teacher."
“Very good, Colin,” Jubilee nodded. “Remember, use only basic skills, not mutant abilities.”
Colin walked to the center of the field, and Lynn Hall moved to the opposite side. The boy was strong and coordinated, clearly having undergone excellent physical training.
"What rules?" Lynn Hall asked Jubilee.
“Standard training rules,” she replied, “light contact, primarily technical demonstration, not aiming for a knockout. Ready?”
The two nodded in confirmation, and Jubilee gave the signal to begin.
Colin adopted a standard fighting stance and cautiously approached. Lynn Hall remained relaxed but alert, observing his opponent's movements and center of gravity. When Colin launched his first probing attack, Lynn Hall easily dodged it, simultaneously demonstrating how to utilize his opponent's strength and momentum with a deft counter-move.
“See?” he explained to the observing students. “Law enforcement officers typically don’t seek direct confrontation, especially against potentially stronger opponents. We train to use leverage and technical superiority, not brute force.”
He continued to spar with Colin several more times, each time demonstrating different techniques and strategies while explaining their practical applications. The students seemed very interested, especially when Lynn Hall discussed how these techniques could deal with different types of threats, including adversaries who might possess superhuman strength.
“When facing opponents beyond the capabilities of ordinary humans,” Lynn Hall explained, demonstrating a unique combination of dodging and counter-attacking, “the key is recognizing patterns and weaknesses. Even the most powerful abilities have conditions and limitations for use.”
Colin was an excellent training partner, quick to adapt and with good reflexes, but Lynn Hall's experience and technique clearly gave him the upper hand. In the final round, Colin attempted a more aggressive attack, but Lynn Hall anticipated this and used a smooth, counter-forceful move to easily subdue the boy, controlling the movement perfectly to avoid causing any injury.
“A very good attempt,” Lynn Hall approvingly said, helping Colin up. “Your foundation is very solid.”
Colin nodded his thanks, his face showing admiration: "Thank you, Inspector. Your movements were so fluid, almost imperceptible."
Jubilee looked equally impressed: "Thank you so much for the presentation, Inspector. I think the students learned something valuable."
The students applauded, and Lynn Hall nodded modestly in response. This interaction gave him a strange sense of satisfaction—although they came from different worlds, they found common ground on certain fundamental principles, such as respect, skill, and discipline. After training, Wolverine and Lynn Hall continued their stroll through the campus, discussing their respective training experiences and combat philosophies.
“You know,” Wolverine suddenly said, “seeing your interactions with these kids, I’m starting to understand why you have such a deep understanding of the mutant issue. Few law enforcement officers are willing to communicate with mutants on an equal footing, let alone share knowledge and experience.”
Lynn Hall reflected on this assessment: "I believe understanding is a two-way street. This visit showed me another side of the mutant community—not just superpowers and potential threats, but real people with the same hopes, fears, and dreams."
Wolverine nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer: "Exactly. That's why Xavier's Academy exists—to create bridges of understanding and respect."
The two walked to a small hill overlooking the lake and stopped to admire the view. In the distance, some young students were playing by the lake, some using their mutant abilities to create splashes and small waves, their laughter echoing in the air.
“It seems very calm,” Lynn Hall commented. “It’s hard to imagine that the same group of people could become the target of an organization like the Black Crow.”
“That’s why we must stop Raven,” Wolverine’s voice hardened. “Whatever his plans are, we cannot allow him to use mutants as experimental subjects.”
Silent all night.
Lynn Hall hadn't slept this soundly in a long time.
The rooms prepared for guests by Xavier's School were small but comfortable, with soft yet supportive mattresses, blackout curtains, and most importantly—absolute quiet. After several days of intense stress, physical exhaustion, and mental pressure, this tranquil environment was an excellent place to recover.
When he finally opened his eyes, sunlight was already streaming into the room through the gaps in the curtains. Lynn stretched and glanced at the digital clock on the bedside table—9:15 a.m. He had slept for almost eleven hours, far exceeding his usual sleep schedule.
“It seems I really need this,” he muttered to himself, feeling refreshed both physically and mentally.
After washing up, Lynn changed into the clean clothes provided by the academy—again amazed at how accurately they had estimated his size—and stepped out of his room. The hallway was empty, but the sounds of students chatting and playing drifted from afar. It was an ordinary school day, and Xavier's daily classes and activities were clearly continuing, despite the many extraordinary events of the previous day.
Lynn found his way to the cafeteria, where several students and staff were having a late breakfast. He poured himself a coffee, grabbed some simple food, and chose a seat by the window. Outside, several young students were engaged in some kind of sport, which looked like a variant of basketball—some students were clearly using slight variations of the variant's abilities, although there seemed to be rules limiting overuse.
"How was your rest, Inspector Hall?"
Lynn looked up and saw Scott Summers—Cyclops—standing by the table, also holding a cup of coffee.
“Very good, thank you,” Lynn replied, gesturing for the other to join in. “I think I need this recovery.”
Scott sat down opposite him. "Indeed, several days of high-intensity operations would drain anyone's energy, even a highly trained agent."
“Where are Jennifer and Coleman?” Lynn asked, realizing he hadn’t seen his teammates yet.
“They’re up,” Scott replied. “I believe they’re in the medical ward, checking on the recovery of the rescued mutants.”
Lynn nodded and took a sip of his coffee. "Where's Blaze? Still in the special detention area?"
“Yes, she woke up last night, but refused to cooperate or provide any information,” Scott’s expression turned serious. “Hank thinks she may have been trained to resist interrogation.”
“Not surprising,” Lynn commented. “The Black Crows seem to be a highly organized group, and its core members likely have extensive training.”
The two briefly discussed some information and speculations about the Black Crow organization, but Scott seemed distracted, as if he had something more important to say.
“Detective Hall,” he finally spoke, his tone becoming more formal, “I need to discuss something important with you. Professor Charles—Xavier—would like to see you after you have finished breakfast.”
Lynn raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Professor Xavier? I thought he..."
Scott smiled slightly. "Not on campus? Yes, he spends most of his time handling diplomatic and political affairs related to mutant rights, but he returned to the academy last night. News spread quickly, especially about our unusual partnership."
This was truly surprising. Charles Xavier is one of the most famous mutants in the world, the founder of the X-Men, and a leading advocate for mutant rights. Lynn hadn't expected to meet him.
“Of course,” Lynn nodded in agreement, “I was honored to meet him.”
“Very good,” Scott stood up. “Please go to your office on the third floor of the main building after you have finished breakfast. Someone will guide you.”
About twenty minutes later, Lynn stood before an oak door on the third floor of the college's main building. The door was simply inscribed with the name "Charles Xavier," without any title or other embellishment. He knocked gently.
“Come in, Inspector Hall,” a gentle but authoritative voice came from inside.
Lynn pushed open the door and entered a spacious and bright office. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered views of the college lawn and a distant lake; the walls were covered with photographs, diplomas, and artwork; one side featured a full wall of bookshelves, while the other side had a comfortable sofa and chairs, clearly set up for meetings. In the center was a large oak desk, behind which sat a bald man, about sixty years old, dressed in a neat dark suit, in a modern wheelchair.
Professor Charles Xavier.
“Detective Hall,” Xavier smiled and extended his hand, “it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Please have a seat.”
Lynn shook his hand, feeling an unusual warmth and strength, and then sat down in the chair at the desk.
“Thank you for your audience, Professor,” Lynn said. “I must say, I never expected to have this honor.” (End of Chapter)
