Chapter 376 Creating Energy Resonance
“The rescued mutants are all in the medical ward and in stable condition,” Coleman reported. “Flame remains in the special confinement area and has not yet regained consciousness. The Brotherhood members have been placed in another area, and Erin Sharp appears to be engaged in some kind of negotiation with some of the Institute’s leadership.”
Lynn Hall nodded, then noticed outside the lounge window that several young mutants were doing some kind of training or game, demonstrating a variety of incredible abilities—a boy could teleport, a girl seemed to be controlling the weather, and a student could shoot small sparks from his fingertips.
“This is truly a unique place,” Lynn Hall commented in a low voice.
"Detective, how was your rest?" Wolverine's voice came from the doorway. He had changed into clean clothes and looked completely recovered, without any trace of the previous battle.
“Very good, thank you,” Lynn Hall replied. “Any news?”
“Scott wants to call a meeting this afternoon to discuss the Black Crow threat and next steps,” Wolverine replied. “Before that, I thought you might be interested in visiting the Academy? To see what we’re doing here.”
Lynnhall glanced at Jennifer and Coleman, both of whom nodded in agreement. This suited West's instructions and satisfied Lynnhall's own curiosity.
“Of course, we’d love to,” he said to Wolverine.
Wolverine nodded, gesturing for them to follow. "Let's begin. First the infrastructure, then the fun parts."
They followed Wolverine through the various areas of the academy—standard classrooms, dormitories, dining halls, libraries—each akin to a typical school, except for occasional special adaptations, such as reinforced furniture or specially designed equipment to accommodate his various mutant abilities.
“All students receive a regular education,” Wolverine explained, “math, science, history, literature—just like in a regular school. But we also have specialized courses that teach them how to manage and understand their own abilities.”
"Who will teach these special courses?" Lynn Hall asked curiously.
“Mainly X-Men members and some experienced mutant instructors,” Wolverine replied. “I teach combat skills and self-defense; Scott teaches tactical thinking; Ororo teaches elemental manipulation; and Hank is in charge of science and mutant biology.”
They walked through an open training field where several older students were practicing some kind of ability, demonstrating their variations under the supervision of a teacher.
“It looks very peaceful here,” Lynn Hall commented, “a stark contrast to the dangers faced by the X-Men.”
Wolverine's expression turned serious: "This is why we fight—to protect this peace, so these children can grow up in a safe environment, without fear of persecution for being different."
They continued on and came to a large building that looked like a stadium. But once they entered, Lynn Hall realized that this was far from an ordinary sports facility.
“Welcome to the Danger Room,” Wolverine said, a hint of pride in his voice, “our most advanced training facilities.”
The interior was a spacious area, with walls, floors, and ceilings covered in some kind of metal plate. In the center of the room, a group of mutants were training—Lynn Hall recognized Cyclops and a young woman who could pass through solid matter; they appeared to be conducting some kind of coordinated combat exercise.
“The Danger Room?” Jennifer repeated, clearly drawn to the name.
“It uses holographic projection and mechanical systems to create all sorts of combat and rescue scenarios,” Wolverine explained, “from natural disasters to hostile forces, it has it all. This is the core facility for X-Men training.”
Lynn Hall observed the ongoing training, awestruck by the advanced technology. The entire room seemed capable of completely altering the environment, currently simulating a city street scene, including buildings, vehicles, and civilians.
“Very impressive,” he commented sincerely. “This training system must have cost a fortune.”
“Professor Xavier established a considerable fund during his lifetime,” Wolverine explained briefly, “and the Academy also has some very generous donors.”
After the training session, Laser Eye noticed the visiting group and walked over.
“It seems the visit went well,” he said, wiping the sweat from his brow.
“Indeed,” Lynn Hall replied. “This facility is amazing.”
Laser Eyes smiled slightly: "Want to give it a try?"
Lynn Hall raised an eyebrow in surprise: "Me? But I'm not a mutant, I don't have any special abilities."
“The Danger Room isn’t just designed for superpowered individuals,” Cyclops explained. “It can also simulate regular combat scenarios. As an FBI agent, I’m sure you have considerable combat training. Perhaps you’d like to demonstrate your skills? We can set a difficulty level suitable for you.”
Lynn Hall pondered, feeling both curious and somewhat cautious. This was a rare opportunity to learn about the X-Men's training methods, but it could also be a test of his abilities.
“Okay,” he finally agreed, “but hopefully the difficulty level will be moderate. After all, I’m just an ordinary person.”
Cyclops smiled. "Don't worry, we'll take good care of you. Logan told me you did exceptionally well in Adirondack, for an 'average person'."
Wolverine—Logan—shrugged, but a hint of approval flashed in his eyes.
Coleman looked somewhat worried: "Sir, are you sure?"
“It’s alright,” Lynn Hall reassured him. “It’s just training. Besides, I’m genuinely curious about how this system works.”
Laser Eye issued instructions to the control room, and soon, the hazardous room began to reconfigure. The metal panels on the walls were reassembled, the floor was raised and lowered, and the entire space transformed into a warehouse-like environment with shelves, boxes, and various bunkers.
“A standard tactical scenario,” Lasereye explained, “is to get from one end to the other while dealing with various virtual enemies. It’s all holographic projection, but the system simulates physical contact; you’ll feel a ‘hit,’ although it won’t cause actual damage.”
Lynn Hall nodded, took off his jacket, and was left in only a T-shirt and jeans. He did a few warm-up exercises to make sure his muscles were relaxed.
"Do you need weapons?" he asked.
“The system will provide virtual weapons within the scenario,” Lasereye replied. “Just like in a real mission, you’ll need to find and utilize resources in the environment.”
Lynn Hall stood at the starting line, ready. Cyclops, Wolverine, Jennifer, and Coleman retreated to the observation area.
“Ready?” Laser Eye asked through the communication system. “Ready,” Lynn Hall confirmed.
"start!"
The scene immediately came to life—the lights dimmed to simulate a nighttime environment; faint footsteps and whispers could be heard in the distance; a tense atmosphere filled the air. Lynn Hall immediately switched to tactical mode, crouched down, and began to cautiously advance, using nearby cover.
He soon encountered his first "enemy"—a holographic armed man. Lynn Hall swiftly closed in before the holographic enemy could detect him, and a series of fluid close-quarters combat moves rendered the holographic enemy "unconscious." The clean and decisive movements demonstrated his special forces training background.
"Professional level," Wolverine commented from the observation area, his voice filled with admiration.
Lynn Hall continued forward, demonstrating excellent tactical awareness and intuition. He accurately assessed potential threats, effectively utilized cover, and precisely controlled the noise of his movements. When he spotted a "weapon"—a holographic pistol—he quickly inspected it, confirmed its status, and then continued onward.
The difficulty of the scenarios gradually increases, and the number of enemies grows, including some "snipers" positioned at high altitudes. Lynn Hall adapts well, demonstrating excellent situational awareness and quick decision-making abilities. His shooting is accurate, his movements are agile, and his strategies are flexible.
“His performance exceeded expectations,” Cyclops whispered to Wolverine, “for someone without superpowers.”
“I told you,” Wolverine replied, “that’s how he was when he fought those Black Crows in the forest. Skilled and sharp-witted.”
Lynn Hall continued forward, nearly completing the mission, with only the final stretch remaining. However, the system seemed to decide to give him an additional challenge—a simulated "mutant" enemy appeared, capable of firing energy beams.
“This wasn’t planned,” Lasereye frowned. “The difficulty level is set too high.”
To everyone's surprise, Lynn Hall immediately adjusted his strategy. Instead of confronting the superpowered enemy directly, he used the environment to create sound interference to attract attention, then approached from the side. As the "mutant" fired at an empty bunker, Lynn Hall had already moved to a favorable position, a precise shot "hitting" his opponent's arm, interrupting the power release, followed by a tactical roll to close the distance, and a precise leg sweep to knock his opponent down.
The entire process was smooth and efficient, demonstrating his adaptability and strategies in dealing with superpower threats.
“It’s over!” Cyclops announced, clearly impressed.
The scene gradually faded away, and the room returned to its original state. Lynn Hall stood there, his breathing slightly rapid but not erratic, his expression calm.
“A truly outstanding performance, Inspector,” Cyclops stepped forward, offering sincere praise, “especially the part against the simulated mutants. Most ordinary people would panic or make poor decisions when faced with superpowers, but you remained calm and tactically astute.”
“Thank you,” Lynn Hall replied, wiping the sweat from his brow. “It’s an impressive training system.”
“You have a military background,” Wolverine said. This wasn’t a question, but a statement.
Lynn Hall nodded. "Special Forces, then the FBI Special Tactics Team, and finally the investigation department."
“No wonder,” Wolverine commented, a slight smile playing on his lips, “Your movements have that precision.”
Jennifer and Coleman walked over, both looking somewhat surprised and proud.
“Sir, that was truly impressive,” Coleman said.
“Thank you,” Lynn Hall replied briefly, then turned to Lasereye. “This training facility is truly advanced. How does it simulate the feeling of physical contact?”
Laser Eye seemed surprised but pleased by the technical question: "It's a force field technology combined with precise sensors. Hank can give you a more detailed explanation; it's mainly his design."
“Speaking of Hank,” Wolverine interjected, “he’s waiting for us. Want to continue the tour?”
Lynn Hall nodded, his curiosity further piqued.
Their next stop was the college's science lab, a spacious, brightly lit area filled with advanced scientific equipment, some of which appeared to exceed the technological capabilities currently available to the public. Dr. Hank McCoy was working there, wearing a white lab coat and special glasses, seemingly completely absorbed in an experiment.
“Hank,” Wolverine called out, “our guest has arrived.”
The blue-clad scientist looked up, offering a friendly smile: "Ah, you've come at the right time! I'm investigating something interesting that might be related to your case."
Lynn Hall approached curiously: "Is it related to Dragon's Blood Tears?"
“Exactly,” Dr. McCoy said excitedly, gesturing for them to look at a microscope screen. “I’ve been studying blood samples taken from the mutants you rescued. The inhibitor Black Crow injected them with contained a compound very similar to the Dragon’s Blood Tears you described, albeit a synthetic version with lower purity.”
He adjusted the display screen to show the molecular structure: "This compound does indeed temporarily enhance mutant abilities, but at the cost of loss of control and severe physical strain. More interestingly, it seems to be able to 'connect' different mutant abilities, creating an energy resonance."
“This aligns with our research at the Black Crow facility,” Lynn Hall said. “The ravens appear to be attempting to create an entity capable of absorbing or controlling multiple variant abilities.”
Dr. McCoy's expression turned serious: "This is an extremely dangerous area of research. Mutant abilities are closely related to an individual's genes, nervous system, and psychological state. Forcibly fusing different abilities could lead to catastrophic consequences."
“Have you heard of similar experiments?” Lynn Hall asked, “In the history of mutants?”
Dr. McCoy and Wolverine exchanged a meaningful glance.
“There are some precedents,” Dr. McCoy said cautiously. “The most famous example is Apocalypse—an ancient and powerful mutant capable of absorbing the abilities of other mutants. But this was achieved through long evolution and a unique genetic structure, not through external chemicals.”
“There are more recent examples,” Wolverine added, his voice low, “Some government projects have attempted to create ‘super mutants’ through genetic manipulation and ability fusion. Most ended in disaster.”
Lynn Hall keenly noticed the subtle change in Wolverine's expression when he mentioned "government projects," and understood that it might be related to his painful experience with Weapon X.
"So, is there any chance that the raven's experiment will succeed?" he asked.
Dr. McCoy shook his head: "From a purely scientific point of view, it's fraught with difficulties. But that doesn't mean he won't cause serious harm. Even a failed experiment can have unpredictable and dangerous consequences." (End of Chapter)
