Chapter 291 Not Wanting to Implicate Her

"Of course I'm serious, your sister-in-law never lies." Tao Qiuyi reached out and pinched Pear's fair and tender little face, then looked at Xiao Huai and Qiu Si.

"You've just eaten, so it's not a good time to run. The three of you go inside and read for a while. I'll come and call you in an hour."

"Remember, only come out when I call you. Ignore anyone else who calls you."

"Okay." Pear was the most obedient. She glanced back at Xiaohuai and Qiusi, then stepped into the house. Watching Pear go inside, Xiaohuai lowered her voice and said, "Sister-in-law, I'll deliver it today."

Tao Qiuyi shook her head, "No, Han Ying is injured, I have to go see her."

Qiu Si knew what Xiao Huai and her sister were talking about.

On the way down the mountain with Brother Wei and his sister, his sister had mentioned that her grandfather lived in a bamboo house in the bamboo forest, along with his grandmother and a little boy.

His sister also made it clear to him that she and Brother Wei would occasionally bring food to their grandfather.

Today, after the braised wild boar with potatoes was cooked, he saw Pear and Little Locust skillfully take out some of it in a large bowl.

I guessed it was meant for my grandfather.

"Sister, I know you are very capable and fearless. But it's dark now, and you might not even be able to see the road clearly outside. You must be careful when you go out," Qiu Si instructed her.

Tao Qiuyi felt warm inside from Xiaohuai and Qiusi's care.

Before transmigrating, she was used to being alone and utterly isolated. After transmigrating, however, fate bestowed upon her so many relatives; perhaps it was a form of compensation.

"Don't worry, I've brought a weapon." Tao Qiuyi waved the wooden stick in her hand.

The two boys glanced at the wooden stick in Tao Qiuyi's hand. Without saying a word, they stepped into the house.

After calling the three boys back inside to study, Tao Qiuyi first locked the yard. Then she went to the kitchen, grabbed the braised wild boar meat she had left behind, and leaped over the yard wall.

There was no moon in winter, but that didn't affect Tao Qiuyi's vision. Passing by the courtyard in front of the large bamboo grove, she saw a figure moving inside.

She recognized Huang Hao at a glance.

Huang Hao had previously offered to stay overnight, but neither she nor Wei Jingyuan agreed. This was because Huang Hao suffers from asthma, and overexertion would be detrimental to his recovery.

It turned out that this person was stubborn and loyal.

Suddenly, a low sound came from behind, and Tao Qiuyi's eyebrows twitched. She passed by silently and arrived at the bamboo gate.

Judging from the breathing sounds coming from inside, Tao Qiuyi could tell there were five people inside. Only her grandfather, Han Ying, and Han Ying's grandmother lived in this narrow bamboo house.

Who are the other two people?
Tao Qiuyi calmly raised her hand and gently knocked on the door. The door was quickly opened, and Han Ying was the one who opened it.

He was stunned for a moment when he saw that it was Tao Qiuyi, then he threw himself into her arms and started to cry.

Ignoring the stench of blood in the air, Tao Qiuyi asked in a low voice, "Han Ying, what's wrong?"

Tao Qiuyi was heartbroken and gently supported the trembling child in her arms to prevent him from aggravating the injury on his head. Wei Jingyuan said that Han Ying was the first to discover that those people had come to steal bricks.

And fearless of evil forces, he bravely went out to stop them, only to have his head broken by them.

She disapproved of such behavior, but Han Ying's courage was commendable.

Han Ying choked up and apologized softly, "Sister, it's my fault, it's all my fault, I'm the one who hurt Grandpa Tao."

Upon hearing Han Ying say that she had harmed Grandpa Tao, Tao Qiuyi realized that something might have happened to her grandfather. The smell of blood in the air might not be Han Ying's, but Grandpa's. Gently pushing Han Ying away, Tao Qiuyi said, "Good girl, you did nothing wrong, you did very well. Now take me to see what happened to Grandpa."

Han Ying was surprised that his sister not only didn't scold him, but also comforted him, which made him cry even harder.

The bamboo house was pitch black and drafty. Tao Qiuyi took out a flashlight from her ring space; it was one she had bought in the county.

The flashlight uses batteries and emits an orange-red light. When used inside such a bamboo hut, it's not easily spotted from the outside.

With the light in, Tao Qiuyi could see the situation inside the room clearly. Two elderly people dressed in tattered clothes sat around a table made of stones, and Grandpa Tao was half-reclined on a simple bed that creaked at the slightest movement.

Grandma Chen stood to one side, wiping away tears from time to time.

Tao Qiuyi was holding a flashlight, and the four elderly people in the house were all looking at her.

Without saying a word, she walked towards Grandpa Tao. Passing by the stone table, she casually placed the large bowl she had been carrying all the way on it.

Approaching Grandpa Tao, Tao Qiuyi noticed sweat on his forehead. She took out a pill and handed it to him, saying softly, "Take this pill first; it will relieve the pain."

"Wei Jingyuan is not home. He will come to see you when he returns."

Grandpa Tao took the pill and swallowed it in one gulp. His cloudy eyes looked at Tao Qiuyi. He said softly, "I'm fine, don't worry. Go back quickly."

"You..." Grandma Chen wanted to say something, but in the end she didn't say anything.

Tao Qiuyi naturally knew that Grandpa Tao didn't send her away because nothing was wrong. Rather, he didn't want to implicate her or make her a target of the villagers.

"Grandpa Tao, it's all my fault. My sister came to see you, please don't send her away, okay?" Han Ying walked to Tao Qiuyi's side. "Sister, I apologize to you on behalf of Grandpa Tao. Grandpa Tao, he..."

“I understand, you don’t need to apologize.” Tao Qiuyi raised her hand and patted Han Ying’s thin shoulder.

They had suffered so much in the past that their health had deteriorated. She had recently brought them food to improve their lives, but it hadn't made much of a difference.

"Sister, you don't understand, Grandpa Tao really..." Han Ying wanted to say something, but Grandpa Tao stopped her, "Han Ying, take her out."

"When Wei Jingyuan returns, I'll have him come and check on your health." With that, Tao Qiuyi turned and left.

She stopped after walking a few steps, turned around and saw Han Ying behind her. Tao Qiuyi gave the flashlight to Han Ying and walked away without looking back.

After a moment of stunned silence, Han Ying looked down at the flashlight in her hand, overjoyed. They finally had light; they no longer had to live in darkness.

Inside the bamboo house.

An old man sitting at the stone table said, "Old Tao, why are you doing this?"

“Qiuyi is Lao Tao’s granddaughter. He doesn’t want to implicate her, so he has to distance himself from her. People like us, whoever gets close to her will have a hard time,” another old man sighed.

"Thank you for bringing Lao Tao back. We haven't had dinner yet, let's eat together here," Grandma Chen said.

"No, no, no, let's go back and eat now." The two elderly people stood up at the same time to leave.

Grandpa Tao also spoke up to persuade them to stay, saying, "Don't go, Qiuyi brought us food again. Let's eat together. You saved my life today, and I have no other way to repay you except by treating you to a meal."

"Qiuyi brings us food from time to time, and we all eat together," Grandma Chen chimed in.

Having said that, the two elderly people had no choice but to stay.
