Chapter 459: The Violence That Cannot Be Shaken Away

Chapter 459: The Violence That Cannot Be Shaken Away (Happy New Year!)
Clark was moving so fast that even a high-speed camera could not capture his action of catching the bullet.

And the bullet did not hurt anyone, so the groundbreaking ceremony went on as planned.

Clark just quietly strengthened the security and then went to catch the attacker, leaving Martin alone to deal with the reporters. He also entertained a group of visitors at noon and was not free until the afternoon to inquire about the matter.

Martin did not have much emotional fluctuations about this assassination. Given his current identity and what he did, it would be strange if he did not encounter an assassination attempt.

"Didn't Clark catch the assassin?"

Martin asked Pete, who was standing opposite him, about the situation.

The captain in charge of the construction site arrangements is a superhuman who can transform his body into steel-like substances. He was once a member of the U.S. Army and has participated in the wars in the Middle East since the beginning of the 21st century. He won several medals, but was tortured by the horrors of the war and could not sleep day and night. He often complained and was eventually expelled from the army.

If this happened in a world without super powers, Pete's fate would not be much better than becoming a homeless person, but when he was expelled from the army, he accidentally awakened his super powers and was noticed by the Sky Eye Society.

Pete, who was not accepted by the army, certainly would not join a spy organization with even less integrity, so he was put under surveillance.

It wasn't until the Battle of Los Angeles when the Justice League stood on the stage that he joined the Justice League. Because of his professional skills gained in the army, he was chosen by Clark to be in charge of security.

"The attacker was very professional. He only fired one bullet, which missed you. He immediately fled, changing his escape method several times, and finally disappeared without any warning."

"If it was an ordinary person, the assassination method would not be bullets but various explosives, which are small in size, highly concealed, and highly lethal. But we took strict security measures in advance and also affected the surrounding signals. In addition, Mr. Kent was with you, so the other party chose shooting, an assassination method with a very low success rate."

Pete reported every detail to Martin.

He frowned, regretting that he could not prevent this from happening. He could not imagine what would happen if the attacker succeeded.

Martin looked down at the photos of evidence on the table, a specially made rifle, an armor-piercing shell and a bullet core that was still intact.

Pete continued to explain: "Kryptonite is added to the steel core of the armor-piercing bullet, so it can penetrate Mr. Kent's hand. But the combination with other substances affects the structure of the kryptonite, and it can no longer emit radiation. As long as you move away from it, this bullet will not affect Mr. Kent."

"Kryptonite is a new and strange thing that ordinary people have never heard of, but for an organization like us, it is not difficult to research similar substances. So I still have to trouble you to continue looking for clues!"

Many people and organizations flashed through Martin's mind, but he didn't say a word to Pete.

He himself was not sure where the attackers came from, and telling them now would only interfere with the direction of Pete's reconnaissance. Instead of that, it would be better to say nothing.

"I promise you that we will catch that guy as soon as possible!"

Pete had a tense face, as if he was going to commit suicide if he failed to complete the task.

Martin dissuaded him, “The reason why I didn’t disclose this matter immediately was because I didn’t want this assassination to affect the confidence of our collaborators. For us, nothing is more important than building a new city.”

"You can check, but don't make a big fuss about it. Of course, if someone comes to ask, you can also leak some information to let our partners know how much we have paid."

"Yes!"

Pete subconsciously saluted Martin, but only after he did it did he feel it was inappropriate.

The Justice League does not have an army now, and in the foreseeable future, it probably will not form an army in the sense of a country. It is somewhat inappropriate for Pete to do this now.

However, in front of Martin, he felt the serious and oppressive atmosphere unique to the army, and did so subconsciously.

"Go ahead. We need to investigate the attackers, but more importantly, the safety of the construction site. It doesn't matter if we can't find the attackers. If they surround the construction site and fight a guerrilla war with us, they will drop a bomb and kill someone from time to time. The members of the alliance don't matter, and the locals can hold on, but those outsiders are hard to say."

After Martin finished speaking, he made a gesture of invitation, and Pete left quickly with a lot of thoughts in his mind.

After Pete left, Clark, still wearing a suit, flew in. Influenced by Martin, he now cared less and less about his secret identity.

Walking into the room, Clark stared at Martin angrily and asked, "The bullet just now flew by your neck, and it was only a few centimeters away from penetrating your skull and turning your brain into a mess. But you only care about the engineering. Don't you care about your own life?"

"If you want to scare me by describing the horrible afterlife, you need to do more. It's useless to just talk about the horrible afterlife. You should talk about what would happen if I were gone."

"Can you be more serious?"

Clark slapped the table with both hands. Although he didn't use much force, it still left two obvious palm marks and dense cracks.

Martin looked at the cracks extending to his face paint and sighed, "This is my serious attitude. Since I have decided to do something that will change the world, I must bear the corresponding risks and costs."

"Our honor and disgrace, reputation a hundred years from now, and even our life now, are nothing compared to our cause. For ordinary people, death is the biggest problem. But for our enemies, death is the most economical and practical way. It does not require any brainpower or exchange of interests. All it takes is a bullet or a pack of explosives to solve all problems."

"If you get so freaked out about something like this, you won't have time to work properly in the future."

Clark was speechless by Martin's calm attitude.

Of course, he also knew that it was certain that people like him would be slandered, assassinated, and attacked.

Anyone with a little bit of common sense who analyzes the history of countries in the American camp rationally will know that the United States and its colonial lackeys habitually use assassination as a convenient way to solve social problems.

Since the founding of the country, almost all American presidents have been assassinated. The military leaders and politicians in South Korea, South Vietnam and Japan all act like feudal lords, killing and suppressing people at will.

They treat their own people this way, and of course they are even more ruthless to external provocateurs.

However, this reality was in sharp conflict with the education Clark had received since childhood, and Martin's official attitude further stimulated his emotions.

"Damn it, bastards. What the hell has this done to them?"

Clark took a deep breath, trying to calm his excited heart.

"Is it possible that the world in the past was worse and more nakedly cruel, but now it is at least covered with a veil. Although doing so will only breed more stupid people and make them unable to see the true face of the world." "Sometimes, I really can't tell whether it is the direct cruel impact that is bad, or the silent making people stupider and worse!"

Martin did not comfort Clark, and his words became more and more unpleasant, making Clark's face shrink.

"Stop it, your words are getting more and more outrageous."

Clark stared at Martin fiercely. If his physical condition today was not at the level of an ordinary person, he would definitely give him a laser face wash.

"Excessiveness is useful. Doesn't this mean you can accept my indifferent reaction to the assassination?"

Martin smiled slightly, and Clark rolled his eyes, ignoring his past habits and raised his middle finger.

"I'm not kidding you. If the enemy is smart, they will soon realize that it is foolish to assassinate us alone. I'm worried that if they fail to assassinate us, they will resort to harassment tactics, and the various projects currently underway will be delayed."

Clark immediately understood what Martin meant, and continued, "You want to increase security forces. Do you want to organize our own army?"

"You are not taking the army seriously, as if anyone can form an army."

Martin does not deny the first half of the sentence, but he does not want to say the second half: "No matter what kind of cloak the army is covered with, the army is an extremely disciplined and pre-modern organizational form. In the current situation of the Justice League, the use of violence to suppress will attract external interference; and there is no sufficient theoretical framework to use ideological tools to prevent the army from becoming a warlord."

"So, what I want to form is some kind of organization similar to a militia and a self-defense force, and let Diana and Arthur each send some people to support them. That's enough."

Clark's Puritan tendencies in personal morality made him extremely disgusted with war, and he usually did not think about things related to the military.

Normally, he appears within the Justice League as a peaceful and neutral person, which makes it difficult for him to speak out on matters like this.

If it were anyone else, they could discuss such matters with Martin, but if it were Clark, he could only listen to Martin's instructions.

But he thought of the projects that were in full swing, and couldn't help asking, "The enemy is coming with such force that they want to kill you the first time they meet. Can the Self-Defense Forces only stop those fierce enemies?"

Clark did not mention the Amazon and Atlantean armies because he had not yet figured out how to deal with these people.

From a personal perspective, as a survivor of Krypton, he certainly has a special affinity for the two tribes outside of human society.

But from the perspective of the Justice League, he found it difficult to determine what consequences the appearance of the Amazons and Atlanteans would cause to human society.

So, just don't mention it. Anyway, since Martin will consider this kind of thing, Clark won't worry about it.

"Of course it wouldn't work if it was an ordinary person. Ordinary people who haven't received professional training can hardly play a role in modern warfare. But what the Justice League lacks the least is superhumans. No matter what their abilities are, as long as they are developed and coordinated to a certain extent, they can play a special role."

"We are not going to attack cities, but just to protect the cities we built with our own hands. This way, we can avoid the trouble of ideological conscription. It is difficult to get people to kill and plunder on the battlefield. But if we ask them to protect their own territory, they will organize themselves without us having to do anything."

Martin talked eloquently, and you wouldn't tell at all that he had just returned from space.

Clark had no interest in this kind of violent group, so he just listened to Martin's idea of doing this, until the other party threw out a list, and then his eyes widened.

"It's only been half a day, how come you've already come up with a list?"

Martin shook his head. "I went to the universe, but the other members of the alliance didn't! This list was compiled by Ron, and they are currently undergoing assessment. My initial plan is to turn those who pass the assessment into a team similar to the Navy SEALs, specifically responsible for combat."

Again, most of the superhumans who can pass the assessment have abilities beyond common sense, and just a small group is enough to match an army.

This is also the reason why Martin can protect the new city without large-scale conscription.

"You can make the decision on this matter. I don't know much about the military!"

Clark looked through the names on the list at a glance, and his brain, which was comparable to a supercomputer, immediately displayed their information. He said nothing, but understood Martin's intention.

As for this kind of group-based combat collective, it is difficult for it to control a large area and it is difficult for it to become a warlord.

Even if someone does something wrong, or even if the whole group has problems, it doesn't matter.

The current core members of the Justice League all have incredible abilities. Clark, who doesn't want to kill anyone, can wipe out everyone on the list by himself.

"After these people pass the training and assessment, they will be stationed in new cities. In other words, they will usually have to obey your orders. How can you do this without knowing it?"

"I think Diana is more suitable for this. Anyway, you also want the Amazons and the underwater people to send support. Isn't this a perfect thing to do?"

Clark really didn't know how to command such a violent group.

"You know, for many years, I have been carefully controlling my power, and it took me a lot of effort to avoid hurting others in my daily life. Now..."

"This is another test for you. Before, you only controlled yourself, but now you have to control social relations. As long as you can pass this level, you will be a true superman!"

Martin didn't want to listen to Clark's personal remarks. "This is inevitable. Even if you get rid of the combat team this time, so what? Next time, are you going to get rid of the police system from the new city as well?"

"You Americans always act so sanctimonious. Violence is an integral part of human society. If we don't control it, our opponents will."

"Stop, stop! Isn't it enough for me to accept it? If you keep talking, all Americans will be born guilty!"

Clark raised his hands in surrender, saying that he would follow Martin's arrangements, and then left the office with the document.

Martin was not idle either. He wrote down various suggestions for the development direction of the new city based on the places he had visited, and then went to work on another important matter.
