Chapter 613, Section 27: The Car in the Container
After confirming Jeremiah Grayson's death, Carl had Iron Block take Andy to the location where Jeremiah Grayson had stored his belongings, while Andy was still busy with his work.
Karl was curious about what Adam's hammer's henchman had left here, so he decided to come and take a look.
If it really is Adam Hammer's car, then he'd like to see what kind of car Adam Hammer's car is.
Perhaps it was for this reason that Johnny Silverhand followed.
According to him, he and Adam Hammer were "sworn enemies," "fated rivals," and he wanted to see what that guy's taste was like—but Carl felt that Johnny's words were a bit exaggerated.
Johnny Silverhand had clearly overestimated himself. While Carl and Adam Hammer weren't exactly close friends, they had at least assessed each other's abilities. He knew very well that for Adam Hammer, there was only one true nemesis—Morgan Blackhand.
Even when he first set his sights on Karl, after exchanging a few blows, Adam Hammer didn't pursue him as relentlessly as he had with Morgan. Although he felt quite sorry for Johnny Silverhand, Karl knew that, given Adam Hammer's personality, Johnny Silverhand, an opponent he had once fought, was at most just an "annoying fly" he would occasionally glance at.
Carl recalled some records he had read about the Arasaka Tower incident. If Morgan Blackhand, Adam Hammer, and Johnny Silverhand were to be categorized, the duel between Morgan Blackhand and Adam Hammer was undoubtedly the climax of that storm. As for Johnny? At best, he was a troublemaker who pestered Adam Hammer, making a ruckus and desperately trying to get Adam Hammer's attention.
Of course, Carl couldn't say this to Johnny Silverhand directly.
Johnny Silverhand still had his pride. Although, according to the records, he was treated like a roadside run-over by Adam Hammer, since he had said that he was Adam Hammer's mortal enemy and his destined rival, then so be it, let's just leave it at that.
Carl was somewhat considerate of Johnny Silverhand's pride.
For someone who values their pride, the humiliation of defeat might be something they can grit their teeth and swallow, but being completely ignored and looked down upon—that's what truly leaves a bitter taste in their mouth. Perhaps it was Adam Hammer's condescending attitude that made Johnny still hold a grudge more than fifty years later.
Urged on by Johnny, Carl followed Iron Block to the dock's crane area. Rusty metal containers were stacked like building blocks, exuding a salty smell in the damp sea breeze. Iron Block led them through the maze of steel frames, finally stopping in front of a sealed container.
"This is the box."
Iron Block turned to look at Karl, his Adam's apple bobbing. He wanted to use a more respectful term to address KK, but after a long and agonizing thought, he couldn't come up with a suitable word.
Who cares about that when they're out on the streets? This guy, who fears nothing and no one, has never addressed anyone with proper respect except for the leader of the Whirlpool Gang. He even calls Brick by his first name. Now you want him to bow and scrape like a corporate dog and call him "Lord KK"? Damn it, that's worse than swallowing a bullet.
"Sir?" That sounds like he's from the Middle Ages. "Sir?" Does his iron-faced man have "civilized man" written on it? "Your Excellency"? What era is that from?
His forehead was almost sweating, and Iron Block could only stiffen his neck and stare straight at Karl, looking like an old terminal that had crashed.
KK paid no attention to Ironhide's behavior; he was already captivated by the container Ironhide had mentioned, which held Jeremiah Grayson's belongings.
The container wasn't very big; it was more than enough to hold ordinary vehicles, but it was a bit small if it were to accommodate a vehicle the size of Adam Hammer, as Karl had initially guessed.
'Maybe it's a spare part?'
With that in mind, Carl reached out and knocked on the container. Listening to the hollow response inside, he confirmed that Jeremiah Grayson's belongings weren't packed very full.
Some people, fearing their belongings might be stolen or damaged during storage, go to great lengths, installing explosives that wouldn't detonate unless verified by them. Carl wasn't afraid of those things, but necessary safety measures were still necessary. Carl tapped the box twice more; the metallic echo was hollow, but the reverberation confirmed that something was off about the sound.
There was a strange sound feedback at the container opening, like a sound that was echoing inside the container and was bouncing back prematurely after encountering an obstacle here.
The sounds inside the container were very faint, but Carl could hear them clearly.
As far as Karl knew, some people with special modifications and prosthetic ears could transform themselves into something like bats, capable of accurately identifying the nature of objects even in the dark through the transmission and reception of ultrasonic waves and the processing of neural signals. Karl couldn't yet reach that level of highly specialized echolocation system, but with the help of current computing power, he could still make some minor distinctions.
Although it's unknown what kind of insurance Jeremiah Grayson added to his shipping container,
“You should be glad you didn’t covet Jeremiah Grayson’s things, or you might have lost a member of your gang.”
While Karl was speaking in a way that Iron Block didn't quite understand, he flexed his wrists.
No matter what kind of insurance is inside, this iron coffin will have to open its mouth obediently today.
Single molecules are ejected.
Just as the prosthetic eye of the metal block caught that cold glint, Karl had already finished cutting and reeling in the wire. The two pieces of sheet metal that had been cut open tilted outwards like doors being lifted by an invisible hand.
- Swish!
Iron Block didn't even see Karl's movements clearly; he only felt Karl's arm sway slightly, and something inside the container turned into a blur and flew towards the distant sea.
'That speed…!'
A belated chill ran up the iron block's spine. If that attack had been aimed at him, he'd probably be a corpse on the ground by now. But before he could even figure out why KK had thrown something into the sea—
boom! ! !
Two seconds later, a ten-meter-high column of water exploded on the sea surface, and the shockwave made the steel frame of the dock vibrate.
“A time-delay bomb.” Carl flicked his wrist. “It’s pretty solid.”
"This"
Iron Block's four prosthetic eyes widened: "I remember that bastard Jeremiah Grayson told me that he was only transporting and storing some small things and personal gadgets!"
"So obviously, in his view, this bomb was a small thing and a personal toy."
After making a casual remark, Carl looked into the container and saw a car with a somewhat outdated design.
