Chapter 151 Undercurrents (Part 1)

It was evening, and the moon had only just risen above the horizon when Jiang Zheng returned.

The moment Chu Yao's hand touched the handle of the medical kit, a knock sounded at the door.

He paused in his hand movements and looked warily at the tall figure standing beside the coffee table.

Jiang Zheng raised his hand, gesturing for her not to touch the box, and then pointed to the door, telling her to open it.

The two tacitly switched places. Jiang Zheng slowly sank into the sofa, crossing his legs listlessly. Chu Yao walked to the door and glanced at him again before opening it.

The door opened, and the young man standing outside was someone I knew somewhat.

Li Yasong glanced at the scene inside the door as if it were nothing, but due to the limited perspective, he could only see two long legs sticking out from the front of the brown leather sofa.

With just one glance, he already knew what was going on, but none of the necessary procedures could be skipped. Li Yasong asked in a polite and gentle tone, "Miss Chu, is Brother Zheng in his room?"

Being confined to the manor, supposedly for a vacation, is actually a restriction of personal freedom. Anyone would feel uncomfortable like that. And if people find out that someone is monitoring your every move, they'll probably be even more furious.

"He's here," Chu Yao replied before looking towards the sofa.

Hearing the conversation, the man lazily got up and walked over unhurriedly, asking casually, "What do you want?"

Li Yasong nodded slightly. "The boss wants you to go to his study."

"Oh," the man said casually, "Now?"

"Yes."

……

Xu Peng just asked Jiang Zheng to play chess with him.

As the game ended, Xu Peng threw his black pieces into the chess box. The agate pieces collided with each other, making a crisp sound.

Xu Penggang first burst into laughter, then sighed softly, "Alas, one can't deny the passage of time. The younger generation surpasses the master; they are truly formidable!"

Jiang Zheng replied modestly, "Not at all, Brother is still in his prime."

Xu Peng waved his hand dismissively, "Don't pretend, kid. I know you too well. You're arrogant and look down on everyone. You're just putting on a show of humility in front of me. Why didn't you give me a few steps earlier?"

Jiang Zheng merely smiled faintly, but remained silent.

"Okay, okay, I'm not kidding anymore. To be honest, playing chess with you is the most fun. You're good at it, you don't hold back, and it's satisfying even when I lose."

After he finished speaking, he turned his head and gave Li Yasong, who was standing to the side, a look.

Li Yasong nodded and turned to leave the study. Jiang Zheng saw all of this, but his expression remained unchanged.

Xu Peng got straight to the point: "Ah Zheng, I won't beat around the bush with you anymore. I called you here today because I have something serious to say."

......"

Three minutes later, there was a knock on the door. After two knocks, Li Yasong returned, pushed the door open, and entered, holding a glass that was more than half full of a clear, watery substance.

He then stood back behind Xu Penggang, still holding his cup.

Throughout the entire process, Xu Penggang didn't look away from him even once, and neither did Jiang Zheng.

As the conversation reached its climax, a turning point was inevitable. Xu Peng calmly and deliberately revealed the key point: "However..."

He paused, deliberately furrowing his brow as if he were struggling with a dilemma, before saying, "...You know, business is tough these days. Those of us in this line of work live on the edge, risking our lives every day just to make a living."

He flicked his cigarette ash and continued earnestly, "Right now, I value you the most in the entire group. You're bold, meticulous, ambitious, and resourceful. I've seen all the contributions you've made over the past two years. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, everything I have now will be handed over to you in the future."

However, my older brother suffered a loss when he was young...

He stopped there, only slightly raising his right palm.

Seeing this, Li Yasong stepped forward, bowed, and placed the water glass neatly on the sandalwood tea table in front of Jiang Zheng.

Jiang Zheng glanced down at the object, then paused for a moment midway through his gaze before looking up at Xu Penggang.

Their eyes met, and an undercurrent of tension simmered beneath the surface.

“Ah Zheng, you are Zhihu’s benefactor, and by all accounts, you are half my benefactor. I shouldn’t treat you like this out of affection, but I hope you can understand that no matter where you are, you can only trust your own people.”

Xu Penggang shrugged, a smile playing on his lips: "Of course, I won't force you; the choice is still yours."

"Once you drink it, you're one of us. The factory I just told you about will be under your management from now on. I'll gradually transfer it to you. You know what that means."

Jiang Zheng lowered his gaze and looked again at the glass of clear liquid. It was clear and clean, looking no different from plain water, but Jiang Zheng knew very well what had been added to it.

What if I don't drink it...? I'll miss out, and all my previous efforts will be wasted.

Without hesitation, Jiang Zheng reached for the glass of liquid in front of him, tilted his head back, and gulped it down. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down until the glass was empty.

Xu Peng clapped his hands, his voice excited and thrilled: "Great! Zheng, I knew I hadn't misjudged you!"
