Chapter 54 Summer Arrives
This was both unexpected and yet perfectly logical.

Looking at the near-collapsed Slok, Guo Mi opened her mouth and "reluctantly" gave him a fish.

Unexpectedly, the usually gluttonous male bear seemed to have lost all appetite today, sitting listlessly by the lake, staring blankly at the water.

Guo Mi had already slapped up seven or eight fish, but the first one that was given to Slok was still lying alone at his feet.

"If you're not going to eat it, I'll take it away."

She stood to the side, reaching out her paws to pull the fish back.

Every fish is precious now, so every one we can save is a fish!
Slok suddenly snapped out of his daze and rushed to Guo Mi's side:
"what to do?!"

Guo Mi was startled. Suppressing her rapidly beating heart, she patiently asked:
"What do you mean?"

Slok was somewhat delirious:
"I've never stayed on the island in the summer; I would starve to death if I did!"

His exaggerated reaction also made Guo Mi a little anxious:

Is it really that hard to survive on Summer Island?

Slok repeatedly affirmed:
"Of course! It's hot in the summer, and there are no seals, so there's nothing to eat!"

The arrival of summer finally made both bears restless. The male bear stood up and circled around, finally his eyes lit up:
"Have it!"

Guo Mi thought he had found some good way to survive, and asked with great interest:

"what happened?"

Slok held his head high and said without thinking:
"I'm going to find Caesar!"

Guo Mi was speechless for a moment; it turned out that when things came to a head, the first person she thought of was still Ken.

Slok couldn't wait:

"I'm going to find Caesar right now and stick with him. He definitely knows how to survive on the island!"

Guo Mi's lips twitched:
"Well then, good luck."

Slok scurried off again, not forgetting to take the fish that Guo Mi was planning to take back with her before he left.

Guo Mi took a deep breath, resisting the urge to slap him, and watched him leave before heading towards the terrace with her spoils of the day.

The two bear cubs stood guard by the sun terrace.

They are now half-grown bears, and although they still have to run away when they encounter adult bears, their chances of surviving have greatly increased.

After much pleading from the two little furballs, Guo Mi reluctantly agreed to let them guard the sun terrace alone, but repeatedly instructed them that if they smelled other bears, they must leave and come to her.

It has to be said that with the help of the two little furballs, Guo Mi's life became much easier.

Labor makes time fly by. Guo Mi spent a lot of time going back and forth between the lake and the sun terrace, and before she knew it, summer had silently arrived.

After dragging the last fish back into the cave, Guo Mi breathed a sigh of relief as she looked at the fruits of her labor. She then said to the two little bears beside her:

"We can't go to the lake tomorrow."

Most of the ice has melted, and the frozen lake has now flowed into the vast ocean. The ice line along the shore has been widening and becoming increasingly fragile.

It could no longer support the weight of an adult bear. Sometimes, when Guo Mi walked on it, she would slip and fall halfway into the seawater.

The thin ice layer can no longer support Guo Mi to concentrate on fishing on the shore for long periods of time. In a few days, the last trace of the entire lake will disappear.

They will completely lose the lake on which they depend for survival.

What worries Xiong even more is that even with the maximum fishing effort before the spring deadline, Guo Mi's stockpiled dried fish is still only enough to cover the bottom of the cave.

She estimated that bears don't need to eat every day, but even so, these fish would only last her and the cub for a week at most. In other words, she would still need to find food for most of the summer, and these fish could only be saved for when they were absolutely starving.

The two bear cubs were curious about what the dried fish tasted like. Guo Mi hesitated for a moment, then pulled one out for them:

"Taste it."

The dry, inelastic flesh, the fishy smell that fresh fish lacks, and the musty taste caused by the Arctic climate.

The two little ones chewed a couple of times with difficulty and gave their evaluation:
"Unappetizing."

This is undoubtedly an extremely disrespectful assessment of Guo Mi's hard work!

Guo Mi was very unconvinced, so she lowered her head and took a bite as well. Her bear face instantly scrunched up, showing even more disrespect than the little bear:

"It tastes terrible."

But in the end, the three bears devoured the fish.

This is their last guarantee of survival, so we must cherish it and preserve it no matter how unpalatable it may be.

Guo Mi then used her ingenuity to find some dry branches to place at the entrance of the cave, then spread dry grass on top, and finally covered it with soil.

However, this was not enough. Polar bears have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, and she needed to find other ways to interfere with the scent emanating from her "fish tank."

Caesar was thoroughly annoyed by Slok's harassment. He quickened his pace to try and shake off the troublesome bear behind him, but the silly bear always managed to catch up again after getting distracted by other things.

If you were to ask Slok what he's best at, it probably wouldn't be hunting seals or throwing tantrums; his answer would most likely be finding Caesar in every nook and cranny.

Now the foolish polar bear, oblivious to the fact that his brother's patience had reached its limit, took a couple of steps and bumped into Caesar hard, complaining:

"I am so hungry."

Caesar's suppressed rage was finally ignited at this moment, and he raised his claws and slammed them down on Slok's face!
Slok screamed in pain as he was beaten, and rolled to the side. Just as he was about to skillfully grab Caesar's front paws, he seemed to catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye.

Upon closer inspection, he immediately stopped and exclaimed in surprise:
"It's Guo Mi!"

Caesar's claws, poised to strike, froze. He stood there for a moment, claws raised, while Slok rolled to his feet.

Finally, he could only lower his claws and casually turn his head to look over.

It still has the same white fur with a hint of reddish-brown as I remember, standing on the shore with two much larger bear cubs, but it doesn't seem as round as before, it seems... a bit thinner.

Caesar's nose twitched twice as he found that familiar scent amidst the mingled aromas.

Every summer, many birds of various species fly to the island, gathering in the thousands, chirping noisily.

These birds especially like to nest by the sea or in low-lying areas, although some individual birds build their nests in higher places.

They will occupy most of the coastline.

The entire coastline is filled with the chirping of birds and the smell of droppings in the summer, disrupting the peaceful lives of polar bears.

Caesar watched as the round-faced bear and its cubs searched the shore, occasionally burying their heads in crevices, and when they looked up, it seemed they had found something.

Birds around her screeched as they swooped down from the sky, constantly crashing into her face and body. Birds even landed arrogantly on the heads of the two bear cubs, chirping and squawking triumphantly.

The three-headed bear weaved through the chaotic flock of birds.

Slok leaned closer and asked:
"what are they doing?"
