Three Years After Falling Off the Cliff
Chapter 13: A Gentleman of Virtue
The assassin who attacked Yun Fuyi was a eunuch, which made the assassination case even more difficult. The matter was quickly reported to the Dali Temple, the Ministry of Justice and the palace.
Only a few days had passed since Yun Fuyi had saved the emperor's life and was conferred the title of Princess, when someone came to kill her. Not to mention the Jingzhao Yin, even officials from the Dali Temple and the Ministry of Justice suspected that the two cases were related.
The Minister of Justice and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court had just arrived at Jingzhao Prefecture and had not even had a sip of hot tea when the bailiffs came in hurriedly to report that the prince had arrived.
Yun Zhaobai stood up and glanced at Fu Yi beside him. Fu Yi blinked at him with innocence in her eyes.
Before the officials reached the door, they saw His Royal Highness the Prince hurried in.
"I will see you, Your Highness."
"No need to be so polite, my lords." Sui Tingheng strode past them and walked up to the Yun brothers and sisters: "Is Miss Yun injured?"
"Thank you for your concern, Your Highness. I'm fine." Fu Yi knelt and saluted again.
"Nothing is wrong." Sui Tingheng said in a low voice, standing three steps away without getting closer: "Please take a seat, everyone."
"Your Highness." Mo Wen stumbled in, holding a cloak in his hand. "It's been cold these past two days. You just recovered from your illness a few days ago. You can't catch a cold again."
Fu Yi then noticed that the prince was wearing a light blue suit with a soybean-sized ink mark on the bottom of the right sleeve. His waist was empty, without any jade pendants or sachets.
"No need." Sui Tingheng raised his hand to let Mo Wen leave, then turned to Jingzhao Prefecture and said, "Please tell me more about this case."
"I dare not. Please take a seat, Your Highness. I will tell you one by one." Jingzhao Yin thought to himself, your niece, the person involved, is here, but your highness insists on asking him. Could it be that your highness has also heard of your niece's reputation as a playboy and keeps his distance from her?
Now he had to speak up for his niece. Although his niece was a little playful, she was honest and had a good eye for people, so she was still a very good person.
Thinking of this, Jingzhao Yin not only explained the whole story, but also interspersed a few words of praise for Fu Yi from time to time, trying his best to break the prince's prejudice against his virtuous niece.
Hearing Jingzhao Yin mention Fu Yi's panic and rushing to Jingzhao Mansion crying for help, Sui Tingheng's eyelids trembled slightly and he turned to look at Fu Yi: "Miss Yun is frightened."
Fu Yi smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to say. Was she as pitiful as Jingzhao Yin described her to be last night?
"Has Miss Yun met anyone else since she came out of the restaurant?" Sui Tingheng glanced at the teacup next to Fu Yi and said to Mo Wen, "Miss Yun's tea is cold. Change her a cup of hot tea."
"Your Highness, there is no need to bother." Fu Yi picked up the teacup and took a sip: "This subject is not picky about tea."
After saying this, Fu Yi found that the prince looked at her deeply. She lowered her head and turned the teacup around in confusion. What was the problem?
"Lord Yun, please have a cup of tea." Mo Wen brought a cup of steaming hot tea and placed it next to Fu Yi. He took away the cold cup of tea and bowed and left.
Several adults looked at the hot tea that was brought to them by other eunuchs, and they were deeply moved. His Royal Highness the Prince was really considerate to others.
If the timing was right, they would have expressed their gratitude and given some praises.
"Your Highness, there was another person present when I was attacked." Fu Yi picked up the teacup and took a sip. Is this... a calming tea?
"Who is it?"
"Prince Ning." Fu Yi's eyes swept over the gray-robed man who was tied up in the hall: "If it weren't for your help, I might have been shot by an arrow."
Click.
This is the sound of the teacup lid scraping against the rim of the cup. A few drops of hot tea spill out of the cup and splash onto the wooden table along the back of the hand.
"Damn you, my humble servant, forgot that this tea was boiling water." Mo Wen looked at the back of the prince's hand that was scalded red by the tea and quickly apologized.
"No problem." Sui Tingheng gently put the teacup back on the table, wiped the water off the back of his hand with a handkerchief, and paused for a moment at the ink spot on his sleeve: "Give me the cloak."
"Go and invite the emperor's uncle." Sui Tingheng tied his cloak and seemed to have thought of something. He stopped the eunuch who was about to pass on the message and turned to look at Fu Yi: "Miss Yun, do you have any objections?"
"Your Highness has no objection." Fu Yi shook her head: "With the help of Prince Ning, perhaps the case will be solved soon."
If Prince Ning wasn't invited over, how could the case be brought to the attention of the entire court?
In the past two years, Prince Ning has been keeping a low profile and has accumulated some good reputation. She, a playboy, wants to help Prince Ning return to the days three years ago when he was the focus of everyone's attention. If His Majesty and the Queen knew about this, they would definitely praise her for being helpful.
Sui Tingheng lowered his eyelids and said no more. He just raised his hand and asked the eunuch to go to Prince Ning's mansion to invite someone.
Seeing that His Royal Highness the Prince stopped talking, the adults had to rack their brains to express their opinions on the case so that His Royal Highness could see their abilities.
It's a pity that His Highness seemed to be in a bad mood because of such a rampant assassination and never smiled.
"Prince Ning has arrived."
Everyone stood up again to greet them. This case involved eunuchs and Prince Ning, so it was not something they could easily give orders.
"Uncle, thank you for coming to Jingzhao Mansion so early." Sui Tingheng bowed to Prince Ning as a junior. "This is an urgent matter. I wonder if Uncle has explained it clearly to Auntie before leaving the mansion. Do you need me to send someone to explain it to Auntie?"
Hearing the words "Imperial Aunt", Prince Ning subconsciously looked at Fu Yi, but Fu Yi was standing behind Yun Zhaobai with her head down, so he couldn't see her face clearly.
"No need." Prince Ning retracted his gaze and smiled gently: "Your aunt has always been gentle and considerate, and never makes things difficult for me."
"The Imperial Uncle and the Imperial Aunt are truly a loving couple." Sui Tingheng turned around and said, "Please have a seat, Imperial Uncle."
"My nephew, please."
The uncle and nephew sat down together. When Sui Tingheng raised his hand, he accidentally bumped into the shoulder of Prince Ning, who had sat down first. Prince Ning was in so much pain that he broke out in a sweat.
"Is the Imperial Uncle injured?" Sui Tingheng's face suddenly darkened. He looked at the man in gray in the hall and said, "Imperial Uncle, this man assassinated the imperial princess and injured you. In your opinion, how should he be punished?"
Prince Ning covered his shoulder which was hurt by Sui Tingheng's collision. Is his nephew born in the Year of the Ox? How can he be so strong? !
He took a deep breath and managed to regain his composure: "Is this the villain who assassinated Miss Yun?" "Your Highness doesn't know this man?!" Fu Yi opened his eyes wide in surprise: "Why don't you take another look, maybe you can remember where you have seen him before."
"What do you mean, Miss Yun?" King Ning looked at Fu Yi and saw that the corners of her mouth were curved up. In the past, she would have this expression when she wanted to make trouble for someone.
"I have no other intentions, Your Majesty, please don't think too much." Fu Yi stroked her chin, "After the bailiff said that this evil thief was a eunuch, I have been wondering if I have seen this person here. Thanks to your appearance, Your Majesty, I finally remembered."
This reminded the adults present that Prince Ning and Miss Yun had been very close and he even intended to marry her as his princess.
"Although the prince has forgotten, fortunately I still remember. There was a eunuch with a mole on his forehead in Xiangkun Palace. This person is the apprentice of that eunuch." Fu Yi walked up to the man in gray, squatted down and looked at his face carefully: "When you made a mistake and were punished, I begged for you. Why do you want to kill me?"
"Woo... Woo!" The man in gray robe was stunned at first, and then looked at King Ning who was sitting upright, but his mouth was stuffed with cloth and he couldn't say anything.
Prince Ning had a blank expression on his face: "I don't have much impression of him, but assassinating the royal family is a serious crime. If it is really this person, the whole family should be sentenced to death."
The gentlemen all looked puzzled. Xiangkun Palace was where Prince Ning's biological mother, Concubine Zeng, lived. How come it was Miss Yun who recognized this person, while Prince Ning said he had no impression of her?
The Queen was assassinated a few days ago, and the murderer behind the scenes was found to be an old eunuch in the palace. The person who assassinated Miss Yun last night was from Xiangkun Palace. How could there be such a coincidence in the world?
Fu Yi took the cloth out of the gray-robed man's mouth: "Anything else you want to say?"
"Were you really the one who pleaded for me back then?" The gray-robed man still remembered that when he first entered the palace, he was punished by the chief eunuch to kneel in the snow because he broke an incense burner. It snowed heavily that day, and the wind made his whole body hurt. Just when he thought he was about to die, someone helped him up and put a thick coat on him.
Later, he was sent to Xiangkun Palace, and took the eunuch who served the imperial concubine as his godfather. Only then did he know that the person who pleaded for him was the imperial concubine's child.
He studied hard with his adoptive father, just wanting to repay His Highness's kindness. He hated the emperor who took His Highness' throne, and even more so Yun Fuyi who made His Highness sad. However, the person he hated deeply said that it was she who saved him.
"Hmm?" Fu Yi raised an eyebrow. "Although I am a playboy, I never take credit for other people's achievements. If I hadn't seen you in the snow that year, how would I have noticed that you were the apprentice of another eunuch?"
Wang San stared at Fu Yi in a daze, and after a long while he said, "Miss Yun, I'm sorry."
All the gratitude I have shown over the years has become a joke.
He wanted to kowtow to Fu Yi, but he couldn't move because he was tied up all over: "Miss, I will repay you for your kindness in my next life."
"No need to wait for the next life, I can take my revenge now." Fu Yi pinched Wang San's chin to prevent him from committing suicide: "Tell the lords, who ordered you to kill me and why?"
"It's my fault that I believed other people's gossip and misunderstood the girl." Wang San did not hide it.
"Who are the people gossiping about you?" Sui Tingheng stood up and walked to Fu Yi, his face as gloomy as water.
"It's... some old people from Xiangkun Palace." Wang San said honestly, "After the imperial concubine passed away, I was assigned to the Wubeiyuan, but I still kept in touch with the eunuchs who used to work in Xiangkun Palace."
He has always regarded His Royal Highness Prince Ning as his savior. In recent days, he has heard his former colleagues complain about Yun Fuyi from time to time, saying how cruel she was to His Royal Highness and how deeply she hurt Him.
He was not on duty yesterday and made an appointment with a eunuch from Prince Ning's Mansion to have a drink in a restaurant. Seeing Yun Fuyi also having dinner in the restaurant, he planned to teach her a lesson.
Fortunately, the prince suddenly appeared and prevented him from accidentally hurting his benefactor.
After listening to Wang San's story, Jingzhao Yin asked in confusion: "Even if you went out of the palace to drink with friends, where did you get your bow and arrows?"
"I took it from a private residence outside the palace. The private residence is the legacy left to me by my adoptive father." Wang San revealed the address of his private residence and all his old colleagues with whom he maintained contact, like pouring beans from a bamboo tube.
"Mo Wen, send a message to the Jinwu Guards to arrest all these people and conduct a thorough investigation." Sui Tingheng turned and looked at Prince Ning: "Uncle, they are all old people who served Concubine Zeng. Do you mind?"
"Of course not." Prince Ning smiled: "I feel the same as my nephew. I wish I could catch all these cunning slaves who dared to discuss the throne."
"I hope your uncle doesn't mind." Sui Tingheng nodded. "I will have the Jinwu Guards thoroughly check Prince Ning's mansion and not let any suspicious person go, lest the evildoers with evil intentions hurt your uncle."
"Your Highness is so considerate that he even considers the safety of the prince." Fu Yi smiled at Sui Tingheng as bright as the morning sun: "No wonder your friends all respect your Highness so much."
Sui Tingheng's eyes were soft: "Miss Yun, you are so kind."
Other adults: "..."
Well, how can it not be considered considerate to take this opportunity to thoroughly investigate Prince Ning's Mansion?
Fu Yi stood up straight, turned around and met King Ning's eyes. She tilted her head and smiled even more brightly.
It is never too late for a gentleman to take revenge, but Yun Fuyi is a playboy, so she takes revenge day and night.
"Your Highness, although this man intended to assassinate me, I would like to ask you to spare his life and let him assist the Jinwu Guards in arresting him, considering that he has shown repentance."
"Since that's Miss Yun's intention, then give him a chance to redeem himself and make meritorious contributions." Sui Tingheng asked the Jinwu Guards to take Wang San away. "Miss Yun was frightened and hasn't slept all night. I'll take you home to rest first."
Yun Zhaobai: “…”
Your Highness, as your elder brother, I am still standing here. Can you please look back?
"Please also invite Mr. Yun to come along." Sui Tingheng nodded slightly to Yun Zhaobai and said to the others, "Thank you for your hard work on this case."
"We are willing to die for you." Several adults watched the prince and the Yun brothers and sisters leave, and couldn't help but sigh again. His Highness is indeed a benevolent gentleman, and he is so good to the person who saved his mother.
