Chapter 137: Saboteur

Chapter 137: Saboteur
He Chi originally thought that he could meet Guderian directly, but when he arrived there he found out that it was just Guderian's staff that wanted to recruit a large number of translators to do some work.

It is said that all the translators within the German Army Group South were called in, and even some Soviet translation experts in the controlled area were brought in.

Come to think of it, as an imperial admiral, there should be no need for him to meet alone. It was a bit presumptuous of me to be distracted by Luke's words.

Led by a major officer, He Chi, Leah, and Tanya were taken to a three-story formal building. They climbed the stairs, and soldiers passing by stood at attention and saluted as they passed by.

This large wooden building is currently the temporary headquarters of the Second Armored Group.

The guard at the door signaled the two men to stop and said, "Please wait a moment. According to regulations, all personnel entering the command center must hand in their weapons. Don't worry, we will return them after you leave."

He Chi took out the Ruger pistol from his arms and put it in the other person's hand. Another soldier also conducted a simple body search on him.

"No problem, go ahead!" The guards put away their weapons and made way to let him pass.

Walking through the wooden-floored corridor, the major pushed open the door to a large room. "Mr. Nukamolenko, please wait a moment. The others will be here soon."

An orderly came in with a tray with small plates of biscuits and candies.

He Chi didn't move, but Tanya grabbed the biscuit and stuffed it into her mouth.

The waiting process was a bit boring, so He Chi focused his attention on the furnishings in the room.

A huge sand table occupied the center of the room, filled with small two-color flags representing both sides. The flags representing the German army had formed a huge encirclement net that trapped the Soviet army in the center of the circle.

In the corner of the room stood a simple radio, with books and newspapers piled up next to it. The edges of the pages were worn and curled, and it was obvious that they were often read.

An iron desk lamp was placed on the corner of the table. The air was filled with the smell of paper and ink, mixed with the smell of soil and fuel outside the window.

The whole room exudes low-key and simplicity.

Noisy footsteps were heard outside the house, the door was pushed open, and about a dozen people walked into the house.

No one who came in was wearing a military uniform. There were men and women, ranging in age from around 20 to over 40.

He Chi discovered something very interesting.

The emotions of the people who walked into the room varied greatly. Some of them were calm, while others looked nervous or even a little frightened.

Soldiers brought them some refreshments, and those who looked like Slavs were obviously eager to eat, but they did not dare to reach for the biscuits.

Card! Card! Card!
It was the sound of military boots hitting the ground.

A dozen staff officers came in, one of them wearing the rank of colonel.

He nodded to the others in the room. "Time is tight, I will explain this to you in the shortest possible time."

"You are all experts in languages, and we are doing you a favor by asking you to come here this time."

Then several soldiers pushed a cart full of various documents into the room. "These are the documents we captured in the recent battle. Your task is to translate them all into German and sort them out."

The colonel looked at the people around He Chi, and then at the nervous men and women. "Some of you are our allies and friends, and some may have served the Soviet Union before. But it doesn't matter. As long as you can complete the mission, we will provide good treatment and compensation."

Another staff officer came in and put down a dozen trays and bags, each with a dozen banknotes on it, and canned food and other food appeared in the pockets.

Obviously, the latter is hard currency during wartime.

"All work must be completed within three days, so everyone needs to get to work immediately. Also, please do not deliberately translate the documents incorrectly, otherwise you will be regarded as a saboteur." The senior staff officer at the side looked at the people of Slavic descent and patted his pistol as a warning before leaving.

The colonel left and the rest of the men got to work.

The people here automatically split into two groups. The German translators naturally stayed together, while people from Romania or the allied vassal states like He Chi also gathered here. The rest were the captured Soviet intellectuals, who gathered together nervously, somewhat at a loss as to what to do.

Those Soviet intellectuals were obviously very hungry. Some of them reached for the plate of biscuits, but their hands were snatched away by the staff officers.

"You need to finish today's work first." The other party said with a grim face.

People cannot resist the hunger, so all the intellectuals started working. Among them, there was a young girl who was very fast. She translated a long paragraph in a short time and handed it to the staff officer.

The German staff officer looked at the document in his hand and nodded with satisfaction. "Very good, you can rest and eat something."

The girl quickly took a biscuit and put it into her mouth, and she started coughing because she ate too quickly.

Leah took this opportunity to poke He Chi's waist, leaned over and whispered in his ear, "I know that girl, she is from Kiev University."

He Chi's expression suddenly changed, and he quietly responded, "Does she know you?"

Leah shook her head. "She didn't know me. I met her on the podium. She is an outstanding graduate of the Language Department of Kyiv University. She has won a scholarship funded by Moscow and the Order of Glory of Labor."

He Chi couldn't help but look at the girl a few more times. Although the Labor Glory Medal is not as rare as the Red Flag Medal and the Gold Star Medal, it is still very valuable among the people. Receiving this award at this age should be considered as a high-level talent.

Are people like this starting to serve the Germans now?
He Chi lowered his head and focused his attention on the documents in front of him. It could be seen that everything in his hand was seized from the Soviet army and was filled with a large amount of military information.

Including documents related to firepower configuration, logistical supplies and troop movements, some of which were handwritten and some were completed on typewriters.

But there is a problem. Most of these documents are from half a month ago, so they should have no value from a military perspective.

So why did Guderian sort out these "expired" things?
Before He Chi could think about it, an officer walked in from the door and said to the staff officer, "There is a problem with the document just translated."

The atmosphere in the room suddenly became tense!
The staff officer stared at the girl who was still eating opposite him with cold eyes, and his hand touched the pistol at his waist.

"Drag that saboteur out for me! Now!" The staff officer waved his hand, and the soldiers rushed forward like wolves and tigers. The girl fell to the ground with a scream, and then the soldiers grabbed her hair and dragged her out of the crowd.

"Wait a moment!" A steady voice sounded, and a German general stood at the door.
