Chapter 49: Mysterious Death

The next day.

Near the Smallwell River.

Officer Ryan stood beside the withered marigolds on the shore, chain-smoking.

It was as if just one more cigarette would heal the tightness in his chest and make him breathe a little easier.

But even after he finished smoking the last cigarette, the feeling of depression did not diminish at all.

Shaking his head, he threw away his cigarette butt and walked over to the coroner who was examining the body.

There was a corpse lying in the grass, its face strangely distorted.

The skin is cracked and aged, and looks like a mummified corpse with the bandages removed.

"Has the deceased been identified?"

Ryan asked his assistant.

"Preliminary determination is that the deceased is Don Haggerty, 12 years old."

"12 years old?"

Ryan looked at the withered corpse in disbelief, "How is this possible?"

The assistant handed him the evidence bag and said, "This is the ring on the deceased's hand. We asked someone familiar with the deceased to identify it and prove that this is the ring that Don Haggerty always wore."

Ryan stared at the two eye-catching letters "DB" on the ring and was shocked.

"impossible!"

He squatted down and stared at the strange corpse.

"It looked like he had been drained of his body."

An idea suddenly flashed through his mind: Could it be that vampires really exist?
No, not possible!
Shaking his head, he threw this ridiculous idea out of his mind and asked his assistant, "Who was the last person the deceased had contact with?"

"According to several of his classmates, after they had a conflict with Clark Kent, the deceased rode home alone."

"Who?"

Hearing Clark's name, Ryan was stunned for a moment, "You mean Clark Kent, Peter Padrick's godson?"

"Yes."

Peter Patrick again?
After repeating Peter's name, his brows furrowed.

At this time, Clark did not know that Don Haggerty, with whom he had a conflict yesterday, had died.

He was working on the Padrick farm, earning some pocket money.

A-Zu took a flyer that he had picked up from somewhere, crumpled it into a ball and threw it on the ground angrily.

Clark put his pitchfork down in surprise and picked up the flyer.

This is a Christian leaflet disguised as a US dollar.

Printed on it is a short story that advises young people not to lose their ambition in indulgence in material things.

It is said that playing online games such as "Dungeons & Dragons" is like lying on the devil's breast and sucking the milk of hell.

Clark threw the flyer away with an unnatural look on his face.

He knew why A-Zu was angry.

Perhaps he thought it was a banknote and picked it up eagerly, but found out that he had been cheated.

You know, A-Zu is a little money-grubber and he will do anything to earn some pocket money.

"I don't believe this."

A-Zu put the lawn mower aside and said depressedly, "Dad said he doesn't want us to become gods that are believed in and hated by others. I hate gods!"

Clark's father, Jonathan, is a Christian. He doesn't really hate religion. "God blesses every believer."

A Zu used Peter's words to suppress Clark, "Dad said: Christians always say there are 144000 seats in heaven, but billions of people have died on God's green earth, but he only likes 144000 of them. God may be a stupid guy."

Clark fell silent after hearing A-Zu's "treasonous" words.

Although I really want to refute the other party, I can't find a suitable argument.

"Well, there is always some truth in what the Godfather says."

He muttered something, and just as he was about to continue working, he noticed a police car driving into the farm, and his parents also drove over. He stopped what he was doing and scratched his hair in confusion, not knowing what was going on.

A few minutes later, Clark and Azu stood nervously beside Peter.

Jonathan and Martha sat nearby with serious faces.

The police just asked a few questions and left, but Jonathan and Martha were shocked.

If the police hadn't come to their door, they wouldn't have known that Clark had a fight with someone yesterday.

Martha asked Peter, "Peter, you know about this, don't you?"

She felt a little jealous. Not only did her son stay at Peter's house every day, but he also kept things from her. Instead, she was more willing to confide in Peter.

"Yeah I know but I don't think it's anything, Clark didn't fight back."

Peter gave Clark a comforting look.

"But. Don. Haggerty is dead!"

"It was just an accident and had nothing to do with Clark."

Peter calmly added coffee to Martha's cup, "We can't blame Clark for the unexpected mistake, right?"

"I didn't blame Clark for the mistake, I just thought."

Martha looked at Clark and said helplessly: "Clark, you should have told us about this."

"Sorry, Mom, Dad."

Clark apologizes to Martha and Kennett.

Jonathan was more understanding. He stroked Clark's hair and asked, "Did they hurt you, Clark?"

"No, Dad."

"Uh-huh, you didn't fight back, did you?"

"Yes, but I really want to beat those guys up. Beat them up hard."

Hearing her son say this, Martha immediately stopped him, "Hey, Clark!"

"It's okay, Clark. I want to beat them up, too. I want to encourage you to fight back. Will that make you feel better?"

Jonathan consoles Clark, "But you wouldn't do that, would you?"

"Yes, I know, Daddy, I know you told me to hold back."

Clark repeated to Martha and Jonathan what his godfather had said to him yesterday.

After listening to this, the couple looked at each other.

Jonathan looked at Peter with emotion.

Although he had always disagreed with some of the educational concepts of Peter, whom he regarded as a brother, he knew that the other party always understood and helped him.

This is also the reason why he trusts Peter and has always agreed to let Clark live here.

After Jonathan and Martha left, Zu asked Peter in confusion, "Dad, is Don Haggerty really dead?"

He wanted to beat this guy up, but he didn't expect that the other party would die instantly.

Peter had received a call from Chandler before and learned about Don Haggerty's death and the situation at the scene.

"Yes, Don Haggerty is dead."

"But. Why? Dad, what happened?"

Clark, with his ears perked up, came over as well.

Although he wanted to beat up Don Haggerty yesterday, he was still quite upset about the other party's death.

"I don't know, maybe it was just an accident."

Although he said this, Peter's expression became serious.

What on earth can turn a living corpse into a mummy?
