Chapter 1480 Rither's "Lover's Tribulation"
Chapter 1480 Rither's "Lover's Tribulation" (Part 2) (Seeking monthly votes!)
This scene was quite unexpected. Although the timing wasn't ideal, several people in the room couldn't help but secretly glance at Jessica's expression.
Fortunately, not everyone is a gossip enthusiast. Finch recognized the woman at a glance. "I know who this woman is. She's Carla Stanton, Reese's partner in the CIA."
Jack chimed in at the opportune moment, “But I remember Reese saying that during his last mission in Afghanistan, he and Kara Stanton almost killed each other because of orders from their superiors.”
Reese escaped after being shot, but his partner perished under a Hellfire missile fired from a drone.
"It's obvious that Reese wasn't the only one who managed to escape, but the question now is, why did Kara Stanton want to capture Reese? Even if she wanted revenge, shouldn't her target be their common superior, Mark Snow?"
Hannah pointed to the bald, middle-aged man who appeared at the end of the video. He was parking a black sedan at the accident site and got out to help Kara Stanton lift Rither into the car.
"If I'm not mistaken, isn't this Mark Snow, the man Reese has been tracking recently? Why is Kara Stanton still obeying his orders?"
Jack can give a small spoiler about this, because the details are right in front of us.
He gestured for Alice to pause and zoom in on one of the shots, pointing to the faint light emanating from Mark Snow's chest and saying, "If Mark Snow hadn't suddenly turned into Tony Stark, I think this would be the timer on the bomb vest."
Alice processed the frames before and after this scene, and finally combined them together, creating a high-definition image similar to the one Jack had created in his previous life, which was synthesized by AI.
In this picture, people can clearly see a bright spot the size of a cell phone screen in the center of Mark Snow's chest.
"So it's not that Kara Stanton is still following Mark Snow's orders, but that she's forcing him to do things for her, or rather, to carry out her revenge plan," Hannah realized.
At this point, Jessica asked in confusion, "But John (Reese) and this Stanton are both victims in some way, so why would she..."
But she quickly realized that the previous scene seemed to have explained a lot of things, such as love turning into hate and old lovers becoming enemies.
Even though Jessica was just an ordinary person, she had been exposed to many thrilling spy stories while sitting at the dinner table with others.
Moreover, although Rither wasn't one to boast, after they resolved their differences, they would occasionally reminisce about the past when they shared a bed.
Although Jack wasn't sure if Reese and his old partner in the CIA had ever had a relationship, what had just happened clearly showed that their relationship wasn't so simple.
At least it's the kind of stress relief that comes from engaging in some kind of friendly, joint activity, in addition to stimulating tasks.
But clearly, now is not a good time for gossip. Finding a way to rescue Rither as soon as possible is the top priority. Jack coughed lightly to signal everyone's attention back to the main topic.
"Assuming that Kara Stanton had planned this all along, had taken control of Mark Snow beforehand, and used him as bait to lure Rither, what exactly did she want to do?"
Finch, did Reese mention before how he discovered Mark Snow's whereabouts?
Finch spread out the documents he had brought on the table, indicating that everyone could take them.
"Before I came, I did a brief investigation into Ms. Stanton's past, including the aliases she had used, the addresses she had registered, the financial situation of each identity, and her death certificate, but unfortunately I didn't find much. However, Reese did mention Mark Snow to me before, and it seems that Mr. Snow did a lot of outrageous things during the time he deliberately disappeared from the CIA's sight."
Finch pointed to a document. "This is a theft record that Reese obtained from Detective Danny Regan a few days ago."
Jack opened the seemingly ordinary theft case file, and a loosely clipped printout of a surveillance image fell out.
Although it was just a slightly blurry back view, the somewhat abrupt head top still made it easy to associate him with Mark Snow at a glance.
Unlike others who had only seen file photos, Jack had seen the CIA in person (Chapter 1402). He and Reese were in the parking lot of the NYPD headquarters building when they witnessed a concrete manifestation of the CIA's internal elimination mechanism.
Jack continued flipping through the file. There wasn't much inside; it revealed that someone resembling Mark Snow had broken into a tech company and stolen a hard drive.
"A brand new 20TB hard drive, 15,000 RPM?" Jack glanced at the hard drive's specifications and asked, somewhat puzzled, "I know these server-grade hard drives aren't cheap, but isn't it a bit beneath a CIA agent to steal something like this?"
“Not at all, Jack,” Finch said seriously. “This is a special model licensed by the NSA, specifically manufactured for high-level government projects and the military.”
"This doesn't sound good." Although Jack couldn't remember the specific details, he could guess with his own eyes that it was related to "machines".
When Reese and Kara Stanton were murdered because of "Operation Northern Lights," Finch had previously admitted that it was related to a laptop that once belonged to him, which contained some kind of program or virus related to "machines."
Jack wondered if he should push Finch and get him to tell the truth.
Although he didn't remember the specific plot, he always felt that something was amiss. Finch had even apologized to Rither before, saying that the whole thing was caused by him, like a riddle.
Just then, Finch's phone rang, and everyone's eyes turned to him.
“Uh…” Finch picked up his phone, his brow furrowed. “Gentlemen, I received a text message from an unknown number that says ‘UXO’.”
Alice keenly noticed that Finch had mentioned an unfamiliar number, not an unknown number. "What's the number?"
As Finch read out the number, Clay's eyes lit up. "In military codes, 'UXO' stands for dangerous unexploded ordnance. Does this mean Reese is hinting that he was forced to wear a bomb vest like Snow?"
"Oh my God!" Jessica covered her mouth tightly to stop herself from crying out loud.
Alice typed the phone number Finch had given her into the system with one hand, while gently patting Jessica on the shoulder with the other to comfort her. "Don't worry, Jack and Clay are experts at handling these kinds of situations."
