Chapter 585 Compromise and Settlement
Chapter 585 Compromise and Settlement
People of a certain stature like Clayton Bello usually arrive at their workplace at 10:30 a.m.
He and his team arrived a little late today; everyone had gone to eat, and the groom was resting in the small house next to the stables.
This timing was perfect for Donna; no one would see her talking to the animals, nor would anyone see the ugly wool doll that Clayton had forced on her and was hanging around her waist.
The three men and the demon entered the stable. Clayton gave Clara instructions, and she climbed onto the roof beam, her figure melting into the scenery.
The werewolf closed the stable door and then, along with his two assistants, checked the horses' condition in each stable.
This was something they had done before, and Julius was already familiar with it, but Donna's arrival still changed a lot of things.
"Your muscles are really beautiful, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart."
"Let me scratch your neck for you, poor little guy, your mane is all matted."
"Want some candy? I'll bring you some in a bit."
The little witch moved among the horses. It wasn't easy to find someone who could communicate with horses, and they were all happy to talk to her.
Soon, all the horses were cheered up by her, forgetting that there was a werewolf next to them. Each one hoped that she could stay with them a little longer, and they did not hesitate to stick their heads out and bite her clothes, or speak in a disorderly manner, and their neighing almost blew the big stable into the sky.
This skill made even her own uncle envious.
Julius bluntly told him, "I don't think you need to worry about cheating anymore. There's no cheating technique in horse racing that's more sophisticated than 'being able to talk to the horse'."
Clayton Bello wholeheartedly agreed.
After finally calming the horses down, Donna returned with a few questions.
There were no signs of cheating among the horses, but one horse had an uncomfortable hoof and needed its horseshoes re-studded. One horse saw the other horses being fed sugar by their riders and wanted some too. Another horse was very anxious, afraid of falling behind the others and disappointing its owner. It believed in a certain grass with extraordinary properties that could enhance its speed and hoped Donna could get it for it.
Finally, they unanimously agreed that the dwarf servants who cared for them smelled terrible and suggested driving away the "moldy pumpkins"—a swear word the horses themselves coined to attack dwarves.
Clayton was amazed by this.
Before the staff returned to work, he decided to improve his relationship with Ma Qun.
After completing a series of tasks such as shoeing horses and finding candy, the three bent over and searched for the so-called "miracle herb" on the grass outside the stable. In reality, this plant was only slightly rarer than the common weeds, and it certainly didn't have any speed-enhancing effects. Heaven knows why horses would have such superstitions.
It's a bit silly for one person to bend over and pay for a horse superstition, but it's a different story when three people do it together.
However, the situation is different when there are bystanders.
Just as they were each clutching a handful of weeds, the worst bystander appeared.
Caroline Courles.
He appeared from the other side of the grass, wearing a top hat and a black shawl over his coat, and carrying an eagle-headed cane. He walked quickly and hurriedly, followed by a valet and Derren, whom Clayton had met before, carrying briefcases and slightly out of breath.
Seeing Bello and his group pulling weeds, they stopped. Bello, his nephew, and the wizard also stopped, holding weeds in their hands, but with solemn expressions.
Clearly, neither of them expected to meet the other.
"The gatekeeper said they hadn't come!" Delren hurriedly stepped forward to explain to Kules.
“They weren’t here when he answered, but you wasted too much time!” Curles shooed him behind him and continued walking forward, his eyes fixed on Clayton Bellow as he approached the stables, making no attempt to hide his contempt.
Clayton Bello casually stuffed the muddy grass into his pocket and walked over, blocking his way.
"Sir Kules, what brings you here?"
This was, in fact, the first time they had seen each other's faces outside of a newspaper.
“I’d like to see these racehorses, but that’s none of your business. You can go over there and mow your grass.” Courles didn’t even bother to address Clayton Bello as Mr. Bello.
Clayton stood motionless in front of him, completely blocking the stables behind him.
“Is that so? But these are extraordinary times, and it’s not a good idea to let outsiders into the races. I don’t recall you having a position on the City Life Committee, or that Mr. Derren has the authority to let people in.”
Caroline Courles could certainly have taken a prestigious but thankless position on the City Life Committee, but given the unspoken rules of the trade, his rank would certainly be lower than Des Joanrard's, which would make him look inferior, so he simply didn't join the committee.
Now, this decision to give up has become an obstacle.
"Do those two have positions?" He looked coldly at the girl who was clearly related to Clayton Bay by blood and the green-haired guy.
Clayton calmly replied, "They are all my assistants, and they will help me set up the track in a moment. If Sir Curries, you could do the same, I would certainly be happy to."
Delren looked like he wanted to say something, but he backed away when the werewolf’s gaze shifted to his face.
In the small hut next door, the coachman had already finished eating. Hearing voices, he came out, but froze upon seeing the two sides in the standoff, his face full of regret.
Sir Courles was known for his bad temper, and Clayton Bello, though not well-known before, has been described in the newspapers these past few days as a villain, violent and lecherous.
Kules could put the coachman out of work with just a word, but the coachman still has a wife and daughter. He is in a predicament where he is caught between a flying dragon above him and a burrowing worm below, and he can only stand helplessly on the wide grass.
"This is none of your business, get back home!"
Clayton Bello's rebuke relieved the coachman, who retreated back into the house and hurriedly closed the door. Curles smirked in disgust, looking at Clayton as if he were a melting slug.
"Why can't you save us some time, you delusional maniac? You know you can't stop me. Even if you can stay here for now, referee, there are plenty of people here who are more qualified than you."
Clayton sneered, but his anger subsided—this guy's methods of provoking people were among the worst he knew.
"My God, so many people are more qualified than me, I'm heartbroken. Thank goodness you and Mr. Delren are here, letting me know there are even less qualified people than me. At least I can stop you."
Kules' expression remained unchanged, but his cane had already been driven deep into the ground.
If Clayton Bello needed any social standing or intended to advance his political career, he would certainly have to worry about Curles's aristocratic status and speak more cautiously and respectfully. But the fact was that Curles's direct retaliation couldn't really hurt him.
Even with damage to his reputation, it doesn't stop Clayton from living a good life.
Kules glared at Clayton, and after a few seconds, a smile suddenly appeared on his face: "Mr. Bellow, I can actually understand your anger. After all, once a beggar gets on a mount, he has to run the horse to death. For someone like you, a horse that can run tirelessly is too important, so you have to get your hands on it no matter what."
Clayton nodded in deep agreement: "Yes, many of my mounts have died in accidents, and I am heartbroken every time. Fortunately, my family is always by my side to help me through the grief. By the way, Sir Culles, do you still have family?"
Before he could even finish his last word, Caroline Cules burst forth with astonishing speed and power, propelling himself forward like a flame spreading across the surface of alcohol, and before his followers could react, he was standing in front of Clayton.
Kules, standing at six feet tall, was slightly inferior to Bello's nearly seven-foot-tall frame, but his burgeoning charisma completely erased the height difference between them.
The werewolf lowered his head and met his gaze without any surprise, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
Clayton Bello's yellow wolf eyes had turned "pure black" with excitement, and his beautifully shaped red mouth couldn't help but grin, stretching across his cheeks to reveal the fangs that could no longer be hidden as the curse deepened. In this moment, his handsome face took on an inhuman evil.
Kules made no comment on the werewolf's appearance. Perhaps at this moment, Clayton Bello's appearance had reached a level of ugliness beyond reality in his mind, and seeing reality clearly was tantamount to beautification:
"You want to duel me? Come on, just like you wrote before, I'll kill you on April 1st. Now get out of my way!"
Everyone could see that his anger had reached its peak, but he was still trying his best to suppress it for some purpose.
Clayton's desire for a duel was fulfilled so suddenly that he was not satisfied. He wanted to push himself further and start the duel right now, so he planned to continue to provoke him. But as soon as he opened his mouth, Donna tugged at his clothes from behind.
Having received the hint, Clayton shut his mouth, smiled, and spread his hands to the side.
"of course."
Cures and his entourage burst through the stable gates.
Clayton watched their retreating figures with a smile. He had gotten what he wanted, so there was nothing to be angry about. Donna grabbed his arm and pulled him down, making him bend over to listen to her. She tried to speak softly so that Kures and his men wouldn't hear.
"There is an unseen person next to Kules."
Julius raised an eyebrow: “My psychic awareness did not see him.”
But after reaching a conclusion, he thought of another answer and looked at the witch in surprise.
“Your talent doesn’t belong to this field, so you can’t sense him. His body is in another world,” Donna said. “I can sense him, maybe it’s his thoughts, or something else, but I just know he’s there.”
This mysterious person of unknown strength is the reason she stopped Clayton.
“I remember now, that was probably his shadow guard,” Julius said. “To be able to hide so well, he must be at least a knight commander.”
The power of the Shadow Transmission comes from connection. They can acquire the power of another world through rituals and are the superhumans whose power progresses the fastest after obtaining the transmission. However, they are also prone to being swallowed by the other world when using their abilities due to excessively strong connections. Therefore, these superhumans always attach themselves to nobles, using their surnames, which are connected to the land, to lock their existence and reduce the cost of using the transmission techniques.
This is a symbiotic relationship.
Clayton laughed again after learning this from the wizard.
Kules's own secret techniques were already quite strong, and the Shadow Technique was known for its ease of use, so his guards were certainly not weak.
To deal with Kules, this guard must also be dealt with.
The thought of hunting two powerful individuals on his birthday to celebrate made Clayton's mouth water.
Seeing his greedy expression, Donna turned to Julius with displeasure, patted her waist, and made the now Clayton-like Waghtu swing back and forth.
"Is this little doll you made really useful?"
Julius licked his lips. "I'm a little unsure now."
Kules and his men quickly emerged from the stables, not even glancing at Clayton Bellow, and walked away without looking back.
Uncle Bello and his nephew, along with Julius, then entered the stables. Upon seeing Donna, the horses became lively again, sharing their opinions about the previous group of guests in response to her inquiries.
The behavior of the Kules frequently appears in their mouths.
"His hands felt very comfortable to touch."
“His hands made me very uncomfortable.”
The two drastically different descriptions combined confirm that Kules was indeed trying to manipulate the game in secret using this method.
The two wizards stepped forward to examine their physical condition, and Julius was the first to draw a conclusion.
"This is the King's Touch."
His words drew the attention of Clayton and Donna, then he looked at Clayton alone and spoke with slight hesitation:
“Clayton, things have gotten complicated. The Book of Siddi is in Kules’s hands.”
