Chapter 53 Getting Lost

Chapter 53 Getting Lost (Part 1)

Just as Meng Chao and I were about to rush forward to check, there was a sudden "bang" behind us.

Why is the door closed?

Meng Chao hurriedly ran back to the door and pulled it a few times, but the door remained tightly shut and wouldn't budge.

"Come and take a look!" Bai Jing turned to me and said.

I walked over and followed her and Gu Haitao's gaze, and my scalp tingled.

There was indeed a person at the bottom of the stairs. But it wasn't a living person; it was a corpse.

The deceased was a woman, dressed in a fairly fashionable manner, but her exposed skin and muscles had begun to wither and shrink, turning dark brown.

The woman's eyes were open, and her eyeballs also showed signs of shrinkage. Under the illumination of the electric light, they reflected an eerie and faint glow, which looked quite terrifying.

"The door is locked!"

Meng Chaoyue said that he was also startled when he saw the corpse:
"Was that her we just saw?"

I shook my head.

Although the figure only flashed by, it appeared to be a man.

"Xiaoyu... Xiaoyu..."

Gu Haitao's eyes were bloodshot, and his body was trembling uncontrollably.

"She is not Fan Xiaoyu."

I took his flashlight, squatted down, and carefully examined the body.

Two words suddenly popped into my head, and I blurted them out unconsciously: "Specimen".

"Specimen?" Bai Jing squatted down next to me.

I shook my head, speechless for a moment.

Suddenly noticing a detail, he hesitated for a moment, then lifted the hem of the woman's long dress slightly.

Bai Jing said, "The wound on her left calf looks like it was caused by something tearing it open."

Nod, then, remembering something, asked Bai Jing:

How do you know someone went missing here six months ago?

"Have you forgotten I'm a lawyer? Last week, a man and a woman came to my office to consult about the transfer of marital property. Well, that couple was quite unusual; the man's wife had disappeared, and the woman's ex-husband had disappeared. They not only asked me how to transfer the property, but also how long a spouse could be missing before they could dissolve the marriage and start a new family."

"It can't be such a coincidence, right?"

"Heh, what else?" Bai Jing's eyes were filled with sarcasm.

"They didn't think about finding their own husbands and wives? I mean... they only contacted you for advice on property and marriage issues?"

“I’m a lawyer, and unless I tell people, very few people know about my ‘side job’.”

Bai Jing seemed to realize something. "What do you want to know?"

Do you have any photos of the couple who went missing six months ago?

Bai Jing shook her head. "The other party only cares about the assets and whether the two of us can get married. The fact that both of our spouses and exes are missing was just something they mentioned casually. Where would I get any photos?"

I examined the woman's body more closely, then stood up. "The body is so dried out that it's hard to tell what it originally looked like. But judging from her clothing, the deceased was at least thirty years old."

"The two who disappeared six months ago, the man is named Ma Maochun, 37; the woman is named Liu Yang, also 37. You suspect this is Liu Yang?"

I shook my head. Death is a big deal. It's best to just speculate and keep it to yourself.

"Mengniu, can you open the door?"

Not hearing a response, I turned around and saw Meng Chao staring blankly at me.

Mengniu!

"Huh?" He seemed to just realize it. "The door... is locked from the outside."

I turned to the other side, "Where's Gu Haitao?"

Meng Chao seemed frightened by the corpse; he was somewhat absent-minded. I asked him twice before he finally stammered:
"I didn't notice where he went..."

"Tsk, what are we waiting for? Let's find him right away!" "Gu Haitao!"

"Gu Haitao!"

……

The gate was locked, but I wasn't worried. After all, a residential building like this couldn't possibly hold a few adults.

But after searching the entire first floor, I was already sweating profusely.

Not only did we fail to find Gu Haitao, we also got lost.

Getting lost, as the name suggests, means losing one's way. The prerequisite is that one must first lose the ability to judge direction.

Getting lost in unfamiliar, vast areas, such as deep mountains and forests, is not uncommon.

However, getting lost in a self-built three-story house is hard to imagine.

The truth is, when I saw the corpse, I decided to retreat. There were dead people; we definitely couldn't handle that.

But Gu Haitao is missing, so we definitely have to find him first.

As a result, when we searched along the corridor from the main entrance, looking all the way to the other end, we not only missed the staircase where the corpse had been hidden, but the main entrance itself was also gone!
I went back and forth twice more, but it was still the same.

The main gate and the central hall directly opposite it have truly disappeared!

Bai Jing didn't seem nervous at all and asked me, "Do you believe in being trapped in a maze of ghosts?"

I gave a dry laugh: "What do you think?"

At this point, if I were to say that 'every situation can be explained by science,' I would be nothing short of a scoundrel.

Bai Jing laughed too: "I'm glad you're not so stubborn. By the way, what did you mean by 'specimen' earlier?"

“I studied medicine… specifically veterinary medicine. Although I deal with animals most of the time, many animal structures share similarities with humans. Based on this, when an animal dies, the final state of its carcass is even more similar to that of a dead person. As you know, we don't often use live animals for experiments; we mostly study specimens. Our initial course is to understand the different processes of specimen preparation before we can delve deeper…”

"I hate doctors!" Bai Jing abruptly interrupted me.

"You asked the question, I haven't finished speaking yet."

"No need to say anything more, I hate discussing corpses with doctors!"

I was speechless for a moment, and after a while, I tried asking her, "Was your ex-boyfriend a doctor?"

Bai Jing frowned and glared at me: "This topic ends here!"

"Okay, okay, whatever you say."

I glanced at Meng Chao and said, "If we can't find the stairs, we'll just find a window and get out first. The security bars won't stop us anyway."

I was about to continue when Meng Chao suddenly pointed ahead: "The stairs are right there!"

Looking in that direction, sure enough, the vanished central hall reappeared.

My heart skipped a beat. I quickly walked to the stairs, crouched down, and saw that the female corpse at the bottom of the stairs was gone.

I looked at Bai Jing and saw that her eyebrows were furrowed, and I vaguely felt that something was wrong.

I made a quick decision: "Go upstairs and look for it!"

I carefully climbed the stairs to the second floor and looked out the window in the corridor. To my surprise, I found that a thick fog had rolled in.

Even though I was on the second floor, I couldn't see the ground!
"This is truly bizarre!" Bai Jing also saw the scene outside clearly.

I shook my head inwardly, then turned around and gestured with my chin towards Meng Chao:
"If it really is a ghost, then that'll be easy to handle. We men are afraid of everything, but not ghosts! Niu Zi, do you remember what we did last time we encountered a ghost wall?"

As I spoke, I ripped the T-shirt off.

Seeing Meng Chao standing there in a daze, I frowned and said:

"Have you forgotten? There's a yang fire on the top of a person's head and on each shoulder. Take off your clothes, and the yang fire will appear. Even the most powerful ghost wall can't trap us then!"

Meng Chao realized what was happening and did the same as me, taking off his shirt.

I glanced at his waist, then stepped forward with a laugh. "You son of a bitch, you're really easy to fool!"

Before he could finish speaking, he suddenly made a hand gesture and used his middle finger knuckle to push against his forehead between his eyebrows!
